Battlefield 3 announced

Remember, RobertR1, what repi said about having to restart the game for some graphic option changes to take effect. Maybe that is what you are seeing?

I made sure to restart the game each time I made the changes.

Setting everything to Ultra 4xAA, HBAO on and such had my down in the 30's for FPS. The GPU power needed to go from 1080p to 1600p seems to really tax the card thus I have to drop down the settings.

I do expect game and driver optimization to help out in the coming months.

Ah, sorry I didn't see you said it in the post. I just skimmed it.

Well I eventually tried Stereo3D but the settings didn't stick even after a restart. I have to assume it's not enabled in the beta.

but there is no way to queue and all the servers (35 or so) are constantly full

Well, I have to dump some money into my car, so any slim hopes of getting a new PC are now extinct. Too bad, because all the PCs vids I've seen look fantastic.

I should download the beta on my "PC", just for kicks.

Query, how high do you suppose I could OC my 570 on air? I want it to be beefed up for this beta.

Presently its OC'd at 800Mhz core. I've seen people commonly going up to 850Mhz, is this safe? Any reason to avoid doing this?

Well, yes. but since I'm not messing with the voltages I'm not horribly worried. What I'm really asking is, should this even be necessary for BF3? I'm downloading the beta as we speak.

No. I'm playing very comfortably on a mix of ULTRA and HIGH with a 470 @1080p. Your 570 will eat it up. Haven't noticed any slowdowns that weren't lag related. Extremely impressive engine. Most people are reporting GPU usage at 99% so your card will be getting a more efficient workout than usual anyway. Some have needed to up the speed on their fans.

The later part of Metro looks fantastic. It's a shame that many times you don't get to that point. The city streets and buildings look great and are quite explorable. Can't wait to play conquest on this map - it's going to be a riot.

Well, since I won't have the beta for a bit longer.. Can anybody talk to me about the AS VAL rifle in this game? It should be in the assault class.

It's basically the same as the VSS, just with a slightly hand guard and a folding skeleton stock. Grip is a polymer\synthetic, no wood. This is the weapon I'm most interested about in BF3, since my all time favorite weapon in BFBC2 was the VSS.
Bad news, the gun isn't unlocked until rank 45.

Okay I'm downloading. Think I have the puniest system of anybody here by far.

E6750 @3200MHz
GTX260 192sp version
4GB DDR2-800
Win7x64.

I'll let you know how it goes :). Since this rig is still massively more powerful than a console and supports the more efficient DX10/11 render path I expect decent performance on reasonable settings.

Yeah, this should get you playable framerates, but possibly some unliked drops when they apply a lot of PP like death scenes or respawn screens.

I do wonder, since my rig is 2-3 times more capable than a console (maybe more.. especially on the CPU side), will I get a 2-3 times better experience?

That is the tell of a good engine. When I get a mostly comparable experience on my computer as a dude does on his XB360, I know the devs have slacked on the PC version.

Tried it on my bro's PC, low presets at 1080p gives 50-60 FPS on his HD5770(Phenom II X4 3.1 ghz , 4GB) in Metro inside area

Catalyst 10.10

Not a big fan of the map...

OC'ing shortens the lifespan of your card period.

True but there needs to be perspective of what that actually means in real usage terms.

You have 2 factors that can pre maturely age a card. Volts and temps. If you let both run out of spec, you're going to have the card die a lot faster. If you increase voltage but keeps the temps in check (common scenario) you're only taking on half the burden. Now we have to figure out what is safe volts for what cards and go from there.

Also, if you're buying an enthusiast level card from most good companies, they'll honor overclocking as long as it's within the provided tolerances.

No, 9 times ;)

Lol well I wouldn't go that far, but I do have 8 times (!) the RAM. And that wasn't even expensive in 2008.

Oh plus another 896MB of GDDR3 on the video card, so I guess that is actually over 9 times :D
