Battlefield 3 announced

I really think that CQC is a game changer. Right in time, when I get bored of the 'standard' BF3 maps and gameplay, CQ jumps in and was very fresh for me! Maps and gameplay, especially the new domination mode, is super fun...but after playing so much, it starts to gets boring again...hopefully the new DLC will have a similar impact than CQ!

The new DLC video looks like it will refresh things up...

I agree about CQC freshening up the game with fast paced gameplay and modes, but I don't see that happening with Armoured Kill, as it brings back the slower BF gameplay again. Even bigger maps than before will only make for sparser gunfights. I am so bad with vehicles in BF3 that I will prbly just suck at Armoured Kill, but I will definitely be there with my gadgets and shizzz.

They can't argue, however, that the 50 euros + 50 euros in DLC they paid for BF2 + expansions which lasted 6 years is lower value for money. Not even taking into account BF2 had mods and user levels and whatnot.
Well no, that's assuming someone continued playing for the entire 6 years. I personally did not... there simply wasn't enough content to keep me occupied up until the BF3 release so I moved on to other games. Had a new BF game come out 2 years after BF2, I would have been all over that instead.

So the value is not really much different for me - in fact there's just an increase in availability of content which is great. I'd much rather play BF than other FPS series, but not the same maps over and over ;)

Now of course all of this is sort of moot until I get a reasonable internet connection again, but I'm looking forward to the vehicle DLC regardless!

Would you guys say that it's worth getting only Battlefield 3 right now, without any of its DLC? BF3 is "cheap enough" now IMO, and I could always pick up Premium later on when it has gone down in price.
Mostly wondering if queue priorities and the vanilla maps still are being played and such.

And to me, it definitely makes it feel less valuable when BF4 is announced this early. IMO they could at least have gotten all DLC out for BF3 before announcing its sequel.
I was late to the game with BC2, got it 7 months or so before BF3 was released, and once BF3 was released, BC2 went down alot in popularity. I'm afraid that's what will happen with BF3 once BF4 is released.

EDIT: Just read about BF3 Premium Edition, looks like that will be the package to get, though I may wait until it's cheaper. All-in-one packages for a relatively cheap price counteracts the feeling of getting milked;)

I honestly wouldn't worry too much... there are by far enough people playing BF3 that even once BF4 comes out there will still be plenty to play with for a long while (even if you don't want to upgrade).

The aftermath footage in the latest premier edition trailer is so damn tempting :D ! I am not a vehicle guy , so AK is not so exciting for me, but Aftermath looked so cool ! Lets bring winter sooner this year :)

In competition format, everything is unlocked..

I think Roderic meant to say that the XP-unlock system creates an artificial field of play, where the lower-skilled players are boosted upwards, while the higher ones are limited and pushed downwards. The only time when it comes close to being fair is at launch for the first-timers because no one has anything at the beginning; they also don't feel the worst of grind like the LTTPers do. After that, people who invest the most ammount of time have a significant advantage by gaining access to the overpowered weapons and equipment and are able to easily outplay the players who haven't unlocked them yet. It is a skill curve for the skill-less. I don't understand why developers do it - if it's about dumbing down and increasing accesibility, such mechanics actually do the opposite by punishing new players. If a competitive multiplayer mode doesn't have every item available from the start, the way in which "unlocking" system of getting more powerful ones should be done is on a per match basis, like in CS and NS with the economy, which also adds a very important element of strategy.

Does such a thing as comp. scene even exists for BF3? lol If someone wanted to play an FPS competitively, why whould the choice be BF3 instead of something like CS or Quake Live, that are much better balanced and have significantly higher skill cap? How today's $100M Skinner box masturbatory simulations offer more than those games I would like to know.

While there is a big difference in the vehicle unlocks, there are no massive advantages of unlocked guns compared to the default ones. (at least not for assault or engineer).

The unlocks instead are intended as flavour, rather than giving a significant advantage.

It's meaningless complexity in both cases or simply bloat. Less bloat = better balance.

In BF3, you are unlocking things per side, per class, per wepon plus vehicle unlocks. This really bad carrot-on-a-stick design mentality needs to stop. That ess was added even to Mario Kart.

Mechanical depth has regressed in lock-step with improvement in graphical complexity/production values and the increasing size of the gaming audience. And it's not a happenstance. The more it costs to make a game, the closer it has to be to the lowest common denominator.

Battlebros!

I keep getting hard locks when playing BF3. Seems like GTX580 just goes down. I have to reset the game. I know this game really pushes GPU and even at stock clocks (which are factory overclocked), I still get these lock ups.

Time to RMA the gpu?

I've tried different drivers. Even moved to win8. Still happens.

In dota2, it'll happen on occasion but it's a guarantee on BF3.

Robert, when starting BF3 from Origin, do you get a message like 'data synchronization failed' with an option to restore the data? I had this last week, and I got hard lock in BF3.

For me it helped to restore the data, after this close the BF3 browser and shut down Origin. Then start everything again and make sure that synchronization works (no error message)....since then I don't have hard locks anymore...

No such messages. I'll often get a white screen and see my GPU utilization drop along with fan speed. In task manager, the game still shows as running fine but no picture is rendered until I end task and relaunch. Rinse and repeat.

I built my new computer and now none of you guys are playing!
Dresden and I used to make it rain, but I think he has now physically entered Skyrim, Tron style

I miss those days. Let's do that again. I am partially fused with Skyrim. It and I will enter a marriage of software and human at 500 hours. I keep loading up BF3, now and then, and I see you on my feed. Let's get a game going, sometime.
