Assassin's Creed - New Interview

Perhaps this is not the right thread to post this in but I figure its as good as any since there is a video in question. I'm going to point out one of my greatest pet peeves with this generation's HD-level graphics in games.

I would like to ask if any of you notice current gen trailers/games and their "jitters" stemming from not so fluent animation AND OR bad framerates? Look at the supposed realtime footage from this assassin's creed diary... as they are panning the city, you can see it jitter. You can see this exact same phenomenon in almost all of the major title's real time trailers. It's painfully evident in the GTA4 videos, new burnout trailer, etc etc...

I assume this is due to footage from incomplete games and I would also like to point out that I see it far more often in trailers of multi platform games but at the same time it makes me wonder how footage like this is even released to the public's eye by such prestigious gaming companies?

Am I the only one noticing these things? Furthermore, am I the only one that would rather have less graphical jazz to achieve a more fluid looking / controlling game? It really vexes me when new trailers arrive and most people go ZOMG LOOKS SO GOOD, while I sit there and wonder what the heck is wrong with the framerate.

If it jitters then it is either the video or the game has low fps. The video may be encoded in a 'lower than smooth' speed. I think speeds around 25fps makes panning in many games/videos 'jitter'.

Because people understand it's work in progress footage and expecailly framerate is a subject to change?

I guess if you took the time to read my post you would realize that I did mention that as a possibility... but some of these games are supposedly close to being released... and I will say AGAIN why this bothers me. It's the fact that these companies are not just a startup from Joe Shmoe... we're talking about rockstar, ubisoft, etc. IF they fully expect to exceed the framerates shown in the videos with the image quality, then it probably isn't smart business practice to show footage of it NOT performing to expectations. That's like handing out samples of your future-to-be-released cologne smelling like dog shit, but saying it's ok because the final product will smell like peaches. To me it's even worse that consumers will take that dog shit and embrace it, insisting it's ok... the final product is subject to change (into aromatic peaches).

Of course I don't expect you to read and understand all that either, since the point didn't make it through to you the first time. I was NOT bashing any UNRELEASED next gen game for their frame rates if that is how you read my post. I was simply stating that FROM A CONSUMER's point of view, marketing your game with such bad frame rates shouldn't be a good idea... yet there are people, just like you, who will step up and defend it regardless. I guess that proves why marketers aren't so worried about it, because of people who have so much blind faith.

And as far as I have experienced... most games have performed basically like their trailers. Especially the trailers which were released very close to the games actual release date.

I think until we see video of someone actually playing the game is hard to tell because we don't know how long ago the diary was made or how old the build of the game they used was. A lot of the footage looked like it was from the same trailer they showed last year at tgs

Ya, I'm pretty sure the footage is old. My point then I guess is, why not use newer footage if they are better already(which everyone is so sure they are and will be)? Of course the diary could've been made around the same time as the first announcement at TGS... but that has been a while. If they've had the diary for this long... how hard is it to edit in newer footage in areas that aren't actually recordings with people in it? Oh well this is all moot and is going way off topic from what I was originally trying to say.

Back to the thread at hand... I think the game has incredible potential, great setting and good atmosphere. I'm really hoping they do well with this new IP.

I think the jitter is due to the encdoign of the video. It is something I notice all the time on nearly all video game footage... particularly when the screen pans... I also notice it on disk also particularly when using the sofdecs...especially the ones from CRI....

Nothing about this game excites me so far.It looks nice and some aspects are technically interesting like the crowd A.I and going anywhere. I hope they aren't serious though that this is what we can expect in terms of a "next-gen" experience.
Climbing walls? Does that even sound like it would be fun for more than 5 minutes?
Exploration is cool but climbing to get there sounds about as interesting as walking up stairs or climbing a ladder.
I think in this drive to make games more realistic and have some catch phrase to justify the next-gen purchase they are going too far by hyping up and focusing on what are otherwise pretty mundane tasks. And couldn't we already climb walls?Oh that's right wecouldn't climb every wall!! I suppose it could be fun depending on how they implement it,but I just don't see it.
I think the reality will set in for some gamers, in about a year from now that the "next-gen experience" is not coming because I just can't imagine anything that will be done that hasn't already been done, even if to a lesser degree.I'm fine with that as my favorite games this gen so far are fairly simple and straightforward.Games like Resistance and Condemmed. I just wish devs would stop with the hype and get back to the basics and just focus on making games fun to play even if they are not overly complex.

I hope the crowd AI is clever enough to enable the protagonist to interact with more than one person at once...

I agree, didn't particularly see anything groundbreaking about the crowd element either.

I like the old architecture.

Maybe they do gothic, renaissance, baroque in sequels.

Always nice to see Jade too.:D

We tossed around some multiplayer ideas earlier in this thread. That's what would make this game real cool but it seems their focus is Prince of Persia for the next-gen with new locale.

It's cool that they studied the period so much and brought in historians as consultants.

I love the look and the fact it set in the third crusade, but the E3 demo looked a little unfinished and buggy. They should delay if they can't get the basics ironed out. Crowd AI and reactions were strange, combat looked too simple (like they were taking turns). So a distraction is to push someone off a building, but no one looks up? I also loved the floating body.

What's with the glowing walls and people, is that to indicate who you have targeted? What about the walls of shimmering light?

I'm also positively underwhelmed with this game right now. It just doesn't look like fun at all. A lot of things are cool and impressive, but in terms of gameplay it seems to have done so many concessions to the skill of the moving around in a game like Prince of Persia that my exitement has dropped a fair bit. The urgency and directness of the game is way off right now, and even the graphics aren't hot. The movement isn't slow, and doesn't give you enough sense of achievement yet. I absolutely hate the way characters that are meaningful are lit up. They should do that in a more subtle way, for instance by having them look at you permanently, or occasionally shout out to or something else more similar. Right now it breaks the illusion in a very bad way.

It is strange to find myself being so critical of the game right now, but I guess that with great new gameplay ideas comes great responsibility. ;)

Wow, really Wow

This looks amazing, perfect animation, lightning lools good too!

A the scale of the game seems impressive.

The good new is that despite the growing number of multi games, the same games look better and better.

I watched PT1&2, and man, this is gonna be a great holiday season(assuming my 360 doesnt get into the holiday spirit and glow red :???: )
