Assassin's Creed - New Interview

O.K. - So I went and bought it (PS3). I've played through the tutorial and the beginning of the first mission. So far the framerates have been fine, no real noticeable slow down. The tearing however is AWFUL.
I just can't understand why devs don't enable V-Sync and triple buffering to avoid any impact on framerate. Is 3.7MB really that valuable? Or do they think people would hate slight judder more than tearing?

Well maybe it does on the 360 but it hasn't on the PS3. I just finished the 3rd assassination. So far the game has been pretty fun. I turned off all the HUD options and the game seemed to run a little smoother (could be placebo) but I do find it much more enjoyable playing with the HUD off anyway, so thats a good thing. The combat is O.K., could be better but not bad. Freerunning is alot of fun. There are definitely repetitive elements to the game, but I'll wait till later in my progress to pass judgement on those. The stories are intriguing and keeping me interested. So far I'd give it an 8.0 One thing is for sure, there are parts off this game that are absolutely stunning to see. Assassins Creed will produce some of the best screen shots you'll ever see, I just wish it was better while it is in motion.

Penny Arcade has a great article that may explain the polar opposites of reviews.

How dare you post this. You just cost me 60 dollars! (Too many games are piling up and not enough time to play them. At this rate I won't get to play Mass Effect until well into December [glares at 50% done Bioshock, unopened Mario Galaxy, upcoming Uncharted, and now unopened Assassin's Creed].)

Input latencies can become an issue - especially since many games already have "triple buffer" delay (2 frames for screen + one for renderpass).

Triple buffer delay? Triple buffering means there is memory reserved to alow the GPU to contenue rendering to instead of waiting for the backbuffer to clear on vsync, it doesn't add any delay.

Input latency.
As in latency from your action to reaction on the screen.

The slightness of the judder Mintmaster mentioned is also debatable, but that's another topic.

I bought it last night. Up to now, (I'm at Damaskus) I can see no frame rate problems although there is a bit of tearing that is in no way distracting at least on my setup.
The game is fun, and the graphics are at times stunning. I don't really get the combat though and I constantly press the square button like an idiot... I'm never sure when I'll hit my opponent and when he'll parry. Perhaps it's just me, but combat seems a bit repetitive.

I haven't done any assassinations, I'm running around the city mostly. HDR in this game can be absolutelly amazing!!!

Got this for the 360 last night at a great price so played it for about 40mins. In the first city just climbing buildings, shoulder tackling old men and women. Haven't noticed any tearing or framerate issues. The game looks very good! Animations are really well done. Initial impressions are good. Gonna have a proper go at it tonight and through the weekend. It MUST! be beaten before Mass Effect.

Sure, so how do you figure that triple bufflering adds any input latency?
He's saying V-sync + triple buffering adds latency. V-sync does, after all, wait for the next refresh period to start putting data on the screen.

I don't think it's significant, though. The extra wait is not the frame rendering time, but the TV refresh time. We're talking about 8ms extra latency on average, and 17ms worst case. The unsightliness of screen tearing is far worse.

For the judder argument, it's not like disabling V-sync really fixes the problem. Any portion of the screen that you look at will still stay on the screen for multiples of 17ms. The tearing just sort of distracts you from it.

Just met my contact in Damascus after saving 3 or 4 civilians. I was surprised you could ride a horse between cities. I figured it would just be memory jumps. The combat takes a bit to get used to but after you get used to things you can really have some fun. Great game so far. Glad I didn't let the FPS chatter worry me, which it was starting to make me second guess whether or not to get the game on the PS3.

Its really funny to hear some of the things the common people say as well as there reactions to things. I've bumped into a few people while riding a horse & they react to it with nice comments, as well as I was riding, went around a corner & just stopped shy of hitting 3 more people which 1 says I scared him but he wasn't hurt & I should watch out. Awesome!

I bought the PS3 version yesterday, and although I can see the framerate dips and tearing (largely because so many people complained about it that I'm subconciously looking for it), it doesn't affect gameplay in the least, and it's not nearly as bad as some of the reviews would lead you to believe. I've seen far worse, on games that were rated far higher.

I'm glad of the Penny Arcade article... I'm playing it the way Gabe did.. I want to enjoy it the way it was meant to be played. Taking your time, exploring the area, doing little odd jobs or just wandering around looking at the pretty sights. I've got one assassination out of the way, and I think I did that one too quickly.. I'm going to sit back and relax my way through the rest of them. So what if it takes me two weeks to beat it? I'm going to enjoy every minute of it while I do.

Sure, but triple buffering only helps avoid the latency of vsync by allowing the GPU to contenue to rendering the next frame rather than having to wait for the back buffer to clear on vsync.

Heh, I've actually kinda been purposely stacking my games.

I've still not yet finished HL2 Orange Box, even though it's a lot of fun. then I got COD4 and started playing that. Then I will get AC and Mass Effect.

I WANT all these games to be unfinished concurrently, just for some sick pleasure I will derive in drowning in all that gaming

I still have EP2 and Crysis on PC that I haven't touched :(

Plan is to move the PC to the TV, set it up with VGA and play at 1360x768 with everything cranked up.

Ugh, I cant get past the "gentle push" part of the test. I also knock the pot out of their hands.. and start over. Ive tried it like 30 times now. Getting annoyed.
