Assassin's Creed - New Interview

Dont have a Frys anywhere around here. But kmart does have a one purchase 20$ off coupon. I just got Super Mario Galaxies for the Wii for $40+tax. Kmart doesnt get AC till tomorrow, so I can wait a day to save $12 I guess. Not as good as the Frys deal, but not bad. My buddy got a 40gig PS3 for $320 today with the coupon, hes pretty excited about that. Plan to use it next week for Uncharted too. Comes close to buy two, get one free counting all the cash saved.

Now I can't decide wich version to buy... I want the PS3 version because it will display much better on my TV (hdmi) but then again, I'd like it to be as steady as possible framerate wise...
And I can't accsess any site (besides B3D) from work to check what people or reviews are saying...
Is there really a verdict regarding the frame rate?

To summarise what I know:

- gamespot says ps3 has slightly smoother framerate
- ign originally said that ps3 had framerate issues, but retracted those comments

My own conclusion is consequently that the ps3 review version had some issues that were ironed out in the final production copy. The only other difference I can see superficially is that the 360 version either has less AA, or it has HDR and the PS3 version doesn't. I really can't tell because so many screenshots are bad quality. It would be great if someone with a professional eye could help out determine this for us.

I have both consoles also but I'm so far inclined, if I'm getting the game at all, then to go with the PS3 version also (living room experience, with HDMI, surround, etc., my 360 is delegated to the 'office' because it makes too much noise).

But I think I can be patient and will await further information.

IGN retracted their framerate comment?

They're still there from what I see:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/834/834770p4.html
The word is beautiful except for the pop-in and troublesome framerate issues. The animations are top-notch, but tough to enjoy with slowdown.
There is considerable texture pop-in and, on PS3, considerable framerate issues. Seeing the two versions side by side, there is no question that the PS3 version runs more poorly than the 360. This is most noticeable in the latter stages of Assassin's Creed. Unfortunately, it does eventually begin to affect gameplay.

http://insider.ign.com/articles/834/834701p4.html
There are two main problems with the visuals in Assassin's Creed. The game suffers from drops in the frame rate and visible texture pop-in. Both of these issues appear with more frequency on PS3 than on 360. We've included side-by-side video to illustrate our point, so download the movies below and see for yourself.

The frame rate is not only far more noticeable, but you can see the difference between the two consoles at any point in the game, not just large open environments. Simply rotate the camera around Altair in the first town and the PS3 clearly runs a good 5 to 10 frames a second behind 360. This really becomes apparent when performing a quick move like the leap of faith from a building's ledge. What looks highly stylized on 360 only highlights the poor frame rate of the PS3.

In taking IGN's word on it more, if only because they are far more detailed in their observations and have provided video comparisons which highlight much more severe screen tearing and slightly worse framerates in the PS3 version. Further, 3 different IGN employees have played it and all share the same opinion. Gamespot's comment was almost in passing, so I would discredit it before IGN's in this case.

Yes, I saw it in the insider's article but I thought they just didn't update that one.

That's weird though, now it is back in the IGN article indeed ... am I going mad? But I take it then that it's true and that the 360 will be the smoother experience.

Indeed the Gamespot claim is odd in the face of IGN and now several captures that seem to show more tearing on PS3. I don't know that I agree with any of the xb360 has better textures/lighting comments from the screens I've seen.

Really not an issue unless you have both platforms and still want the game. :)

Thanx man, I think that I'll take my chances with the PS3 version. I can only hope it's not as bad as with R6 Vegas, that was from times to times unplayable for me... I'll post impressions later in the day. If my 360 had an hdmi port I'd go with that, but right now my projector doesn't like componnent so...

I'm sure I read a comment somewhere from the developer stating the 360 version does indeed run better......I'll have a hunt and see what I can find!

Ok, just found what I was reading at : http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=27891&page=13
Whereby Charles is supposed to be oine of the development team
Since the cat is out of the ol' bag, I'll just go ahead and say that Gamespot mixed their platforms up. Dunno about contrast (PS3 games always seem more washed out to me), but from everything I know, the 360 runs better.

Also, I'm really not surprised about the wide range of reviews. I've always been convinced it would be a love it or hate it game.

So far, the loves are winning, so I'm happy!

Well I know I'm getting it on the PS3. Since I won't be a cynical reviewer while I'm playing it, I'm sure I'll be near the Gamespot, GI, IGNAU reviews. The quality's there and I know I'll find it.

Gamersyde has video's of both the PS3 and 360 version.

"The first 10 minutes (PS3)" and "The first 10 Minutes (360) Part 2" contain the same sections (360 version starts somewhat earlier), so it is good material to compare with. Aside from the contrast/brightness issues, the framerate is significantly better on 360.

The programmer mentioned earlier also stated the following:
Not to get in to any specifics, but there was a hell of a lot more effort put in to the PS3 version.

I am personally convinced (ie my opinion and not that of ubisoft) that "enough resources" approaches impossibility.

Our game drove our engine programmers batty, as the AI is most of the workload, and linear it is not. These new systems love programs that are just straight forward number crunching with as little branching as possible. That is the complete opposite of what is needed to make a game like ours.

Just saw it and there is major difference. The PS3 version has noticably lower framerate in many places and the tearing is more noticable. :???:

computerandvideogames said:
Under a microscope the PS3 version does look a bit sharper when the two versions are running side by side.
The Xbox 360 version makes up for this with (arguably) better controls and we're also told it runs two or three frames faster than the PS3 cousin, though no-one's going to notice that.

Can't watch the video though, for some reason it doesn't show up...

I get the impression from that thread that he is also a big 360 fanboy.

Just for a change, what you're saying differs from my opinion.

I don't know about the framerate but except for that (it'd important if we were talking about serious framerate drops but looks to me they are little hiccups here and there, perhaps for both versions, it never blisters and also never chugs, either) and some textures, the differences aren't noticeable, or meaningless, from an average gamer perspective.

In my view, the X360 version looks (very) slightly better but well.., I'm a Xbox fan.

My eyes are really bad. I just got the PS3 version so I'll see if the FR is unplayable soon.

The game seems to run pretty well so far. PS3 version that is. No noticeable frame rate drops, but I'm not looking for it either. I say get your preferred platform & just enjoy the game.
