Assassin's Creed - New Interview

Seeing a LOT of AC commercials, including extended gameplay footage.

They've really worked up the promotions for this. I can see it overshadowing a lot of other good games like Uncharted.

AC apparently had a launch party in LA this past week. There were rumors that Jade was going to pose in a swim suit for Maxim's Women of Gaming or some nonsense like that. She denied it.

I'm not too worried about Uncharted. AC will sell well because it's a big multi-platform title. But Uncharted will sell well because its a PS3 exclusive, it's a different game (with very solid gameplay by the way), and its graphics are likely to end up being very far beyond those of AC. I expect it will stay unmatched for a while and has a very wide appeal. I think a lot of people are saying Uncharted this month, AC next month or vice versa ...

The way the one up guys have been trashing the game in a snide, asinine way, both on forums and their podcast, I'm not going to trust their review at all. They seem to just have it out for the game. I'll expect it to get an 8-ish score from 1up. So I'll be looking more at IGN and Gamespot's reviews.

And since IGN seems a bit prone to overrating next gen games lately, probably a bit more on the Gamespot side.

Yup their weird trolling in forums trying to make sure everybody reads their off the wall review is really annoying.

EGM and 1UP seem to suffer from the worst cases of 'groupthink' I've seen in a gaming publication. I can't remember the last time a 1UP review differed significantly than the EGM counterpart in final score. It's like a few key people make up their minds about a game, and everybody in the organization echoes that view.

I get that...it's very strange how they kind of think together....as if they're scared to give their own opinion. If someone talks out they get ridiculed at 1up (Shane and Heavenly Sword comes to mind) and are put in check...they all like to group bitch about games. It's like some sad gang where the individuals can't think for themselves.

(ps. I only read the first sentence of your comment and had to write that...reading the rest of your comment, sees we have exactly the same view)

deepbrown and scooby, where is the 1up review ? I can't find it on their site.
(I read their preview... which is kinda ok)

As for Group Think, I don't follow their podcasts and forum posts, so I can't tell. I do note that they don't generally behave like a journalist.
Can you PM me the thread they trolled ? I have my own rather negative opinion about gaming press (I would score most of them 3/10 :) ), but I do not believe they would troll forums.

There is no review. skip basically commented on GI review saying he is surprised at the score. He edited all his comments since he broke NDA so you can't find anything. I believe skip is doing EGM review and don... something is doing 1up.

Neogaf. The GI review of 9.5 came out. He just said he was surprised and then started hinting that it was not that good, that it was repetitious etc etc . Which I felt was a kick in the balls to the devs as this was their first review and all they were doing at neogaf was asking what was wrong with the game. Well two more reviews are in from Gamepro and Gamesrader...both with perfect scores :)

There was also an interesting comment from Luke Smith mentioning that the reviews leaked all happened to be excellent scores, and a similar thing happened with Red Steel, another Ubisoft title. That game turned out to be quite poor, as other reviews began to be released after the NDA was lifted.

Of course there's no evidence to say AC won't be a great game - just that the review game is getting a bit dirty, with different dates for publishing reviews based on score ranges (say, 9 and up is Nov 1, 8 and up is Nov 8, anything else must wait until the release date). It's hard for smaller sites that normally would be looked over to turn down such an offer - it puts them on the map in a very crowded market.

Gameinformer, Gamepro and Gamesradar aren't small sites.

Yes, they are.

Who are the biggest review sites on the net? 1Up, Gamespot and IGN. Hell, name the biggest review sites on the net in descending order and how long until you hit the biggest one of those three? For me, it would be double-digits before I hit one.

How many people read more than a handful of reviews for a game? Very few - only the hardcore. What proportion of the internet market (in percentages) do you think the three you've listed each make? My personal guess would be safe to say that the three sites combined make up <10% of the market. That is small in anyone's terms. Even if your view differs, you surely cannot claim those three are the biggest sites out there, and don't need to do what they can to make more money just to remain competitive.

For a start Gameinformer is a magazine - widely read. They are so well known that they got the exclusive for AC.

Gamepro are in the top 6,000 sites. Gamesradar is actually ahead of 1up in term of gaming websites. It is 2,260 whereas 1up is 2,314. If you want to talk about small gaming websites you want to talk about those that are outside of the top 20,000. Only Gamespot and IGN are the massive sites. And as we know it is not a site giving an amazing score that gets them hits, it is either 1) being the first to give a review score, or 2) giving a score in-proportional to others (look to Gamespot and Ratchet)

However, having a site being paid out by a company for a big review is not out of the ordinary. Though in this case I'm not sure if this is what has happened. Gamepro and Gamesradar are generally generous.

The vast majority of games give their exlcusives to Game Informer, the print magazine.

Not gamespot, or IGN. That sugests to me that GI reaches more people in it's print publication, than any online review site.

Yes, they are.

Who are the biggest review sites on the net? 1Up,

I learned about 1up when they covered the Ridge Racer PS3 version with a weekly special.

It was ... underwhelming and i haven´t really used them since. I use previews, interviews, word of mouth and demos to decide what to buy. Rarely will a review do anything.

Plus I've already proven 1up isn't in even in the top 1,000. IGN and Gamespot are in the top 200

I read multiple reviews only if I'm on the fence about a game, or if a particular review is noticably different from the majority. For example, I'm buying AC on day one, so I'll probably only read one or two reviews of it, more for their impressions and opinions rather than as a purchasing decision. But if they're all 9+ ratings, and one site somewhere lists it as 5.5, then I'll give that review a read just to see what they have to say.

Another thing I do, that seems to be in the minority of most of the gaming sites I visit, is that I actually read the review in it's entirety, the good and the bad. There have been multiple occasions where a game has gotten points taken off for certain "problems", but after reading the review and the opinions within it, I realize that their complaints don't bother me as much as it apparently bothers them. For example, about AC here.. 1up and EGM are both extremely skeptical about the control scheme, and I've gotten the distinct impression that they quite simply don't like it, and are slamming the game as a result. But, since the control scheme is something I'm actually looking forward to, I take their negative comments about it with a huge grain of salt. Especially seeing as how they're in the minority... everyone else seems to be saying pretty much the same thing.. "Takes some getting used to, but once you wrap your head around it, it's frikkin' brilliant".

The only thing that's going to affect my decision to purchase this game would be if all of the "big" sites (IGN, Gamespot, etc) all reviewed the game as being very poor, and had good gripes that would affect how much I enjoy it. But somehow, I just don't see that happening with this title.

The concept of this game seem like it could be really fun, though i haven't been keeping up with the story to much. It seems the Knight Templar are in it, hopefully their depiction of them is of the unbiased form and they show them for how they really were.
