(Apparently) silly question

i said (apparently) because when you think about it, devs are always taking features off the European releases of games, :devilish: anyway here comes the question:

is Progressive Scan mode still available on the European versions of Tekken 4 and Burnout2... and any other ps2 games that support prog scan???

i'm asking because i was playing around with Tekken 4 (not mine though) and altough i could find the video mode to *soften up* the image quality, nothing lead me to think there is a Progressive scan mode......

what about xbox and GC games??

oh, and now that we're here, what about HDTV support in european versions of (especially xbox) european games?????

thanx in advance

I just checked with the European version of Tekken 4, and it does have a progressive scan option. When it loads you get an option screen where you can select 50Hz, 60Hz or progressive scan.

Not at all, but support for progressive scan is removed for PAL software at the request of the EU. Same goes for Xbox software. I'm surprised that PAL PS2 games support it but then again an increasing amount of TVs and DVD players has the feature (mostly for NTSC/60 Hz signals though).
Maybe the manufacturers are realizing that there's no point in holding back the technology just because the DVB standard hasn't been finalized. That's the EU's problem.

 so there would be no point now to get a progressive scan tv to use it with current consoles if i'm in the UK...........

nice, loving europe more day by day :devilish:

Not unless you import. You could still get one for DVDs and future support though. It's starting to become a fairly standard feature in TVs from certain companies so it won't necessarilly cost you extra money.

so basically, there is not one game in europe (apart from tekken4  ) that supports progressive scan??????

not even on GC and XBOX????

what about Zelda perfect image quality thanx to prog scan??? will they take that off??

this is ridiculous

Maybe, maybe not... I don't know.

> not even on GC and XBOX????

There are no PAL Cube titles with prog scan... can't say if a few Xbox titles have slipped through. I know there are PAL Xbox titles that mention prog scan in the manual yet the feature has been removed from the actual game.

Prog scan in PAL Cube and Xbox titles is also a pretty redundant feature since most PAL tvs that support prog scan need a 60 hz signal. Not to mention that Nintendo doesn't sell YUV component cables in Europe and M$ doesn't sell whatever box you need to get a prog scan signal out of the Xbox.

> what about Zelda perfect image quality thanx to prog scan??? will they

Well... it'll look as good as any other PAL title. Most ppl won't know the difference.

The PAL version of The Getaway also offers progressive scan.

edit: Also if you have a modded Xbox with a PAL/NTSC software switch installed, you can run PAL Xbox games in NTSC mode and enjoy progressive scan.

**Well... it'll look as good as any other PAL title. Most ppl won't know the difference.**

well that can be said even with the US version.... its not like there are so many people who can actually enjoy progr scan in the US, its an optional feature... dont see why they should take it off just because its the EU version.... its different from the issue of 60Hz mode, here we're talking about taking something off a title just for the sake of it...

and for people who know about it, there is a great difference between interlaced mode and prog scan, nintendo and microsoft should know that. why scrap one of the few features that makes gc and xbox games look gorgeous!?!?!?!?!

like taking Dolby Digital off Final Fantasy X...

do they think we've got no electricity in here or what?!?!?! there are at least 200.000 people in the UK alone with Surround Sound systems. is that not enough!?!?!? they must think we still play games on black and white TV's with MONO audio......

i just dont get it, it makes me so angry!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :devilish: :devilish: :devilish:

turns up that Sony is the only one pushing the envelope in IQ here in Europe... which is frankly a bit ridiculous since both Xbox and GC have much better IQ than the PS2 at least in most titles.....

london-boy:

As i said, they're doing so at the request of the EU. You think developers remove features just to piss of Europeans?

what makes me angry is that the european are unable to make their HD standard or to use the US one.. (i would prefer 480p over 576i any day..)

we even can't enjoy pal DVD w/ progressive scan output. unless we are using some chinese dvd players that are not legal in europe i'm afraid..
i read that it was a problem w/ macrovision who has not validated 576p..

I KNOW I KNOW, BUT IT JUST MAKES ME SO F**KIN ANGRY!!!!!!

that was the only reason i was gonna fork out some money on a progr scan TV.... and i'm sure i'm not the only one.....

whoever decided this, they're holding back the progress of technology...

gosh i'm so pissed off!!!!!!!!

The USA and the EU was actually working on a common standard but the US wanted HDTV to be out sooner rather than later and the EU wanted to spend more time developing a proper standard.

While I'm all for waiting for a proper product the problem is that the EU's decision to wait is slowing everything else down. Also, the terrestial standard most European countries will go with is merely a digital 480i signal. If some countries decide to support HDTV instead they will also have to broadcast PAL signals and digital 480i alongside for a certain period. Only Australia has committed to that.

This pretty much puts the pressure on cable and sattelite providers to support HTDV as the national terrestial net won't in most places. That or DVDs. Would suck to be confined to 480i for the next 10-15 years.

On the up-side we'll have a lot more channels to choose from.

WANNA BET THAT PS3 AND THE OTHER NEXT GEN CONSOLES WONT HAVE A HDTV FEATURE OR PROGRESSIVE SCAN OPTION HERE IN THE EU............................................................

FINE, I'M MOVING.
