Anyone else kinda dissappointed with this generation

Of console games?

There are some excellent titles on all platforms (including DC), but it strikes me that the quantity of good hits just isn't as active as the ps1, N64 generation.

I'd put the DC on the top of the list, b/c it seems that although their library was tiny, like one out of every four games was really good. Not true for the others, where its much more diluted.
As a RPG fan, its been particuraly dissappointing.

Moreover theres been some big name titles with a lot of dev time that IMO have been pretty crappy. Also, there has been a lot of hype done by the review circuits, that seem to artificially inflate certain big name titles to more than they deserve.

Anyone else feel that way as well?

Well, I don't know about previous gens, but 2002 and thus far of 2003 have sucked in comparison to 2001 :(

2001 had..

Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo, Dead or Alive 3, Gran Turismo 3, Devil May Cry, and Ico (off the top of my head).

Nothing has really come close to rivalling that lineup thus far :( I mean, those were all GREAT games, since then there's been the odd stragler, but no 5 month home run stretch like we saw in 2001..

i kinda agree with u, although i must say, the days of ps1 were all a big WOW for me.. u know, the first real 3D graphics... the first FMV heavy games (got old pretty quick but it was a big wow at the time)...
the wow factor has gone, although there have been a few titles which were able to wow me, like ICO, GT3, MGS2 at times and some others...

what makes me angry is the inevitable growth of cheap crappy licenced games... with all the movies, comics and all that, the crappy licenced games have been more than they used to be... i mean i can name one or 2 games based on movies that were actually DECENT... one was Lord of the Rings, which still got old pretty quickly... and.............. errrrrrmmm.............

These steps need to be implemented....

1) Games based on movies should be banned!
2) There should be only one sequel in 2 years!
3) Not more than 3 sequels should be allowed!
4) Few publishers/developers should be shown the door.....3DO/989 etc...

I liked the Tomb Raider movie :p

I also liked playing the PowerVR version of TR on my Videologic Apocalypse3D too. Got it to run at 30 fps at 1024x768 in 24-bit color...just beautiful ;)

Oh btw did I mention that my younger sister was on the set with Angelina Jolie in one of her older films? Yep, she was an extra and was standing about 5 feet away from the actress and even received a nice smile from AJ 8)

3D0 was shown the door.. and despite their suckiness, I never like seeing businesses go under. The end of someone's dream :?

YEAH sacking them all is a bit too much.... they just need to look at what the competition is doing better and learn.... cant be that hard...

like all the people saying we should ban Chap instead of trying to get something into his head.... :D

So, basically we are all communists at heart...

few more steps........

Not more than 5 games per month! One for each genre!

Only one game per week!

No games during exams!

A game can be played only twice that too for total 50 hrs, after that it will be locked! This is to ensure equal gaming time for all games!

Disappointed? Granted, I haven't been playing console games as long as others (first console was a SNES, then PSX, PS2 etc), but this generation is the best ever IMO. Most memorable games thus far are Final Fantasy X, WipEout Fusion, Jak & Daxter and of course Gran Turismo 3.

Tekken Tag, SSX, Devil May Cry, TimeSplitters and many others also made for some very entertaining game sessions... well, so really, I can't really feel disappointet.

As for games coming: my most anticipated games are Jak II, MGS3 and of course the next Gran Turismo! Now, if only Studio Liverpool would confirm another WipEout game.............. :?

3D0 wasn't that bad...they did the Heroes of Might and Magic series, which is digital crack, especially the 3rd one.

YEAH of course each generation is "the best"... but i'm talking about the first time i opened the box and saw my first console ever, a NES, now THAT was a big wow.... u know, as u get older u get a life and these things affect u less and less.... next generation will be a big wow in realism and all that, but still finishing Super Mario Bros the first time in my life was the best thing that ever happened to me at the time, and finishing a game hasnt felt that good ever since....
maybe when i finished ICO... but its just different i guess...

As far as GameCube goes I'm more than happy with what I got to play in the last year. From March 2002 - March 2003 I got RE Remake, Mario Sunshine, SFA, RE0, Metroid Prime, Zelda:TWW (that bonus disc with the Ocarina/Master Quest was sweet) and Animal Crossing. With the exception of Pikmin and Super Smash Bros. Melee being the only titles I liked up to that point for GC. For the future, F-Zero GX and Mario Kart DD will get much play from me.

For PS2 compared to 2001's lineup I thought it was kind of weak. I mean it was solid but GT3, FFX, MGS2, GTA3 and Devil May Cry in one season that was hard to top, but my favorites for the past year were Socom and Need For Speed HP 2. Devil May Cry 2 was such a dissapointment to me and that kinda rounded out my PS2 experience this last year. Although, the next ICO has me more than excited.

For Xbox, Rallisport and Mechassualt, I couldn't stop playing those two when they came out. I only wish I was more impressed by Panzer Dragoon Orta, but I made the very stupid mistake of playing DC Ikaruga at around the same time, and everytime I tried to play PDO, I just turned it off and went back to Ikaruga. PD just wasn't the same as it was on Saturn. I kept being reminded that Sega doesn't make consoles anymore and I get all sad inside. With Ikaruga on Dreamcast, a masterpiece of a shooter, right there on a Sega console to play, I snubbed PDO. But for Xbox, Halo2 is looking to kick so much booty, can't wait for that.

I thought the last year was ok for gaming, I spent the most time with GC, especially when Ikaruga came state side. I would also definitely agree that DC has one of the finest libraries in console history for such a short period, especially when you factor in stuff that never made it out of Japan like Ikaruga and Shenmue II. If you can pick up a used DC for cheap and get some cheap used games, DO IT!

Most DC games are available on the other consoles.

Spread over 3 consoles at probably a higher price. What if you don't own all 3 consoles or want to pay a higher price. Cheap DC, plus cheap used games.

Forgot about Europe and Shenmue2. What about one of Treasure's other gems, Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh (although I think this was N64 port) or the quirky Animastar. SNK's Cool Cool Toon, Sega's Dream Studio or Rent-a-Hero No. 1 . How about Capcom's El Dorado Gate: Volume 1-7 or Moero! Justice Gakkuen or Vampire Chronicle. Fighting Vipers2, Guilty Gear X (was this released in the US for DC?), Fire ProWrestling D , Headhunter (PAL version), Kikaioh, SNK's Last Blade 2: Final Edition (I think this was released in the US but I could never find it), or maybe Sakura Wars: Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2. Most of those titles have quirky written all over them, but that didn't mean I didn't love them. During its run, I don't think a month had passed without having to import something. I loved the DC, there was always some game I just had to buy, and if I didn't have some US release to pick up I most certainly imported it without a second thought.

I think a lot of us are becoming jaded. I am a little disappointed with certain developers this generation (Square and Sonic Team, for starters) but overall there have been some memorable games:

ICO, Metroid Prime, Shenmue, Twisted Metal Black, Rez, Metal Gear Solid 2, Wind Waker, SSBM, Xenosaga, VOOT, Guilty Gear X/X2, Zone of the Enders 2, Devil May Cry, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Resident Evil remake, Halo, Jet Set Radio Future, Deathrow, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Phantasy Star Online, Dead or Alive 2/LE/3, Power Stone, Final Fantasy X, Skies of Arcadia, Eternal Darkness, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Shinobi, Silent Hill 2, GUNVALKYRIE, Samba de Amigo, Dark Cloud 2, and Jet Grind Radio.

"Some"? I meant "a hell of a lot"! :devilish:

The game that really made me go WOW this gen was the mgs2 demo.

My god, after looking at the amazing screenshots for months(I had webTV at the time so no movies :( ) I rented ZOE the first day it came out, and of course it came with the MGS2 demo(I made sure it did)

When I saw the tanker for the first time, I stared at the screen in disbelief, just sheer awe. I have never seen anything that looked that good in my life basically, it was just incredible. The gameplay was also great, I could do things I never could do in games.

The combat was great, the enviornments even more amazing, the shattering glass depending on where it get's hit? The guard interaction? Amazing.

I will never forget my first experiences with the MGS2 demo, that was the game that made me go wow this gen.
