Anybody know if SATA CD/DVD drives coming out?

Was SATA even designed with the other peripherals in mind? I've asked a few other forums but nobody seems to know the answer.

Thanks,

Dave

P.S. While I am at it, are the BTX Motherboards supposed to be coming out at the same time as PCI-Exprees?

This my friend is a very good question, I don't see any reason for them to release SATA perhipheals, but I hope they do. Then they will need at least 4 sata headers though to have the same amount of periphs as 2 channel IDE.

Think high end boards will have like 8 SATA? perhaps this is why they don't want to, but I am not sure as the the efficiency.

i believe i saw a pic of a plexto dvd-rw that was sata capable. Not sure why its taking so long to get them rolled out. It surely would make people upgrade their old cd/dvd drives. Creating quite a bit of revenue.

Hello All,

I build motherboard test stations (we have a bit over 7,000 motherboards now) and I would LOVE to get rid of every IDE cable in our lab! I have been waiting for serial ata for quite a few years, but I don't understand why no CD or DVD player has yet to adopt it.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks for the link epicstruggle. Atleast, we now know for sure they are making them and they should be out soon.

for sata drives don't u need a new power supply thats compatabile . A motherboard and then the drives. Thats alot of moeny.

this should vitalize the economy though. getting people to spend money. :) although i think there is an adapter for the powersupply lines.

I haven't even seen many cheap mobos w/ 4 SATA ports.

The DFI LanParty NFII Ultra B has 4 though so it seems that it will become common (I am so sad I bought my WD HD b4 I could get SATA ah well...and my wife has no desire for me to buy a new drive I don't need)

No, you just need a Molex-SATA power cable converter to use it with a regular psu. Of course you'll need a new mobo too, but I'd venture to guess that the only people buying SATA drives are those who already have a SATA motherboard.
