Anandtech acquired by Purch (owner of Tom's Hardware)

Tech Report's podcast a few days ago talked a lot about online media and making money and their own struggle.

TechReport is doing everything they can to prevent selling out. I really hope it pays off for them. They got some $$ from me in any case.

Tom's went to complete shit almost instantly when they were acquired by purch. There were links in the forums to hentai pron games! Nothing against cartoon porn but I don't think it really fits on a tech site. I said goodbye at that moment and found my new home at B3D.

You're talking about tom's initial buyout by bestofmedia, though. Tom's were only purchased by purch a bit over a year ago.

Yeah, Tom's hasn't been good in nearly a decade now.

Hey Anandtech do you want me to turn on adblock? Because this is how you get me to turn on adblock:

There's now like 25% of space for the news per se. What the hell?
Not to mention the text is practically glued to the humongous ad to the left.

I think everyone understood I was talking about the huge black Seasonic ad bars cramping around the article's text and the other ads.
Those are gone. I haven't seen them since Ryan's post.
So what's there to miss?

Anandtech is a most pleasant browsing experience when the canvas i less than 1024px wide. If one were so inclined, I'm sure a small userscript could be authored to achieve the same effect.

Not to deprive them of their ad revenue (people can always use adblock for that), but rather to applaud them prioritizing making their content available on small screens rather than their advertisements.

That most of the page is now ads, rather than a particular ad causing an issue with overlap onto the remaining article area.

Thats what I took away from that post as well. Then again a majority of websites have gone ad crazy long ago so I'm unphased when I see what they look like without adblockers.

TechReport is still good about ads. Except sometimes lately they have autoplaying video ads which were created by Lucifer himself. But I don't think they intentionally put them on there.

There's this one Mac/Apple-centric website, I have repressed its name, which had like 12 ads of various shapes and sizes spread out all over its front page, mostly towards the top obviously, but bunches further down as well. I generally don't care much about ads, but this was just ludicrously overloaded. I deleted the bookmark to not go there again by mistake. :p (To make matters worse, I got the impression they just aggregated news from other Apple sites, leeching off of the ad revenue whilst providing nothing in return themselves.)

iMore? I follow a couple of their editors on Twitter, so I've had cause to click links to their site recently. It stands out as being ad-ridden to the point of abject horror.
