American Idol is pissing me off

And I thought the 'Porn Idol' was just a name of some new gay sex dvd
But I'm almost sure there is a film called 'Porn Idol', or at least in production... there must be!

Oh there must be! Google it!

I tried, but I'm at work, and if I type 'porn' on Google, I get a message saying:

"GO BACK!

I'm glad B3d is still considered 'reasonably related to Company business :)

Yeah, she's very cute but she also should've been the one to go home last night. La Toya was my favorite. The fact that Jennifer, La Toya, and Amy are gone and Dianna and Jasmine are left is a travesty. But last night's event just gave the show to Fantasia, IMO.

I'm with London-lad, what happened?

I've seen just enough of the show to know that I don't think I could ever watch it except in an MST3K sort of commenting way. (Oh, that and I really hope to meet that rather obnoxious Simon fellow some dark night in an alley when I happen to have me clue-by-four handy.... ;) )

You guys watch that crap? I guess you guys watch Top Model too :p

LOL. I've got to admit: I HATED all reality TV shows... until that fateful evening that I turned on "America's Next Top Model". What a freaking awesome show. I was hooked immediately. Not by the eye candy so much as the Jerry Springer type verbal catfights that frequently erupted. Not proud of it, but I watched every episode of that show. I still say that Shandi got screwed!

What makes that funny (if you knew me) is that this is comming from a (nearly) 30 year old, former kickboxer/boxer, former ROTC/Army Reserve volunteer, "man's man" type of guy. Again, I'm not proud of it, but Shandi and Mercedes were just SO CUTE!

I stop watching American Idol when the William Hungs of the show are all eliminated in the 2nd or 3rd week. Watching those types is the only entertainment I get out of it.

I don't. I think people are tired of "oversinging", I know I am. Remember, this is a pop-culture show via popular vote. People vote not just for voice, but for newness, style, personality, etc. If everyone had the same taste as the judges, almost all singers would sound the same.

Subtlety? American idol singers thing quality is singing as loud and as strong as possible is what wings. I don't think volume or hitting the highest notes possible are the only delimited of a quality performer.

Could Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby win Idol? Probably not give the way judges are selecting performers.

But then Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby were never POP idols..... ;)

Everyone in their 20s today grew up thinking that "good singing=Mariah Carey". No wonder 99% of the female (and even some male) performers try to resemble those kind of singers. Hell, there are a whole lot of professional singers today who totally copied other people's styles... Christina Aguilera being the most blatant one at taking the Mariah formula. Cause they know it sells millions of records. Weird that today even Mariah (or Whitney Houston or whoever else) herself can't sell that many records.

People get over Pop idols pretty quickly. Now, if we want to talk about soul or rock idols, that's an entirely new matter.

Yeah, I'm personally sick of the Mariah/Christina/whole "Diva" schtick. (well, and Britney/Spice/Backstreet/Timberlake/etc )

The point is, American teenagers (the predominant voters on the show according to reports) are sick of it to. Yet when the "Divas" got voted off, everyone cried racism. Did anyone cry sexism when all men got voted off? Or all women last season? Did anyone cry racism because whites were underrepresented as selected from the 7000 auditions based on percentages?

I honestly thought George was the most new and unique performer of the bunch and would have liked to see him win.

I was rooting for George about 5-6 weeks ago but his performances started to really suffer. Either that or the 'theme' music wasn't suited to his talents/tastes.

I agree on the oversinging, too, and have mentioned that on a # of occasions to my wife while watching (particularly with Jennifer). But, that said La Toya is still clearly a much better singer than Jasmine; Simon is correct in saying both La Toya and Fantasia are in a league of their own.

I thought George was really getting better as time went one. Though when singing Gloria Estphan’s music I did not know wether to laugh or cry. It seem no one can make her songs sound good. Even Gloria herself!

Peronsally my issue with the whole 'Blah Idol' thing is the cynicism of the marketing behind it.

Manufactured bands: they've been around for decades (The Monkees, anyone?). In the 80's and 90's Boy Bands and Girl Bands were big, they were manufactured but peopls kind-of accepted it. Then the buying public got a bit jaded with the whole idea and started to shy away from all the blatantly synthetic nonsense.

What to do, what to do? Option A: Go out and find some real talent. Hmmm, that requires work. Option B: Stick to the manufactured band strategy but with audience participation and a goddamned soap-opera mixed in!

It's absolute marketing genius! How better to make someone buy some crap song than persuade them that's it's great because they voted for the moron who sang it in some telly show! You get the cash for the CD, the cash for the telly rights, the cash for the mobile phone vote, and guaranteed brand-loyalty and all the other stuff all in one! These people should be in politics.

The one thing that depresses me more than people having time to think this stuff up is that people actually genuinely care about this.

Anyway, I'll shut up now, before I get all maudling :)

I'm pulling for Diana, but then I know her, so I may be biased. :)

Still, I was stunned that La Toya got booted. She was my second favorite. Jasmine should have been gone weeks ago.

I do take issue with your comment that it's a travesty that Diana is still there. She has the best voice in the whole group. I'll agree that she's too young for the competition, really, but when she can blow any of the other contestants away with her voice I can't say she doesn't belong up there. She deserves to be in the final three, and even the final two. I was really hoping for a Diana/La Toya finish.

I agree that this probably just gave the contest to Fantasia.

Well, sorry to bump this, but i saw the finale some days ago, and i'm not sure why Diana was there, but god, Fantasia is out of this world. Can't wait to hear some original material from her.

Also, who thinks that the song chosen to be her first single is way too "pop" for Fantasia? She needs material in the vein of Macy Gray, Mary J Blige, or any other older soul diva.
