American Fined in Brazil for Gesture

To have one's fingerprints taken is sg what I'd call an intrusion into my private sphere. I personally do not like to be treated as a potential criminal.

I don't think anyone does.

I can understand that people feel offended and they're heading for revenge.

I can understand that private citizens might feel that way, but if this issue would really factor in a decision that Brazil's judicial system makes then it would be simply inexcusable.

I am not certain many of them even visit the US. On top of this the US has been trying to provide stricter security measures for obvious reasons. I am sorry, US security comes before the whims of tourists.

I don't see these brazilians as getting revenge, i see them as playing a political game to exploit tourist to hold them against their by threat of death for days at a time (armed guards) only to follow suite by providing them with absurd fines. This is jsut straight up abuse.

These measures (fingerprints) and the subsequent fines where introduced after the US started taking fingerprints. As a matter of fact a Brazilian judge ordered them right after the US procedure started.
I'd say that would qualify it as revenge in my definition...

Well, I happen to know quite a few people that would feel that way and actually have postponed trips to the US.

The US started for security reasons. I do not believe it is even US policy to do what they did by abusing these people.

As a matter of fact a Brazilian judge ordered them right after the US procedure started.

Then this is most certainly a political game on behalf of the Brazilian government.

I'd say it qualifies as an inexcusable and unjustifiable act of malice against innocent people.

Its a pitty they don't want their finger prints taken. I really, truly, pitty them.

Calling this an act of revenge hardly justifies it. These people do not have a right to come to the US. They are guests here and will abide by the rules. They don't like that? Tough, they can get the fxck out.

I didn't justify it. In fact, I find it quite ridiculous and in way very immature and childish. I just wanted to point out what motive led to this decisions.

I can hardly say the motive was cause for their reaction.

They are insulted by the new US policy so they take it out on tourists? I really pitty they can't bare to have their pictures taken for security reasons. I imagine their policies only apply to American whites too btw. I hope they enjoy their political game. Hopefully it will hurt their tourism

Yes, but You fail to see that taking photographs and fingerprints of terrorists is entirely different than taking photographs and fingerprints of american citizens.
It would be tempting to think that imposing equal measures to american citizens entering Brazil as brazilian citizens entering US would just be fair. But as the latest victim declared, he isn't a monkey.

But as the latest victim declared, he isn't a monkey.

I think the last victim declared he was just kidding around and was abused by a system that was invited as a political game. Fairness does not appear to be the intent of this system. However, without a doubt both of these people should be reprimanded. However, the severity of their offenses does not meet the punishment.

I believe the more recent victim was merely joking around as he stated he was. However i feel the pilot was deliberately stand-offish as he more than likely knew the system had been inacted with the intent to mock and to harm.

I quote (from Yahoo):
"... Skolnick entering a jail cell and telling Brazilian journalists, "I'm an American citizen. I'm not a monkey." "
Easy mistake to make. Glad he sorted that one out... :)

Probably a reference to a monkey being a caged animal.

Do you see Americans as easy to confuse with monkeys?

He likewise stated his gesture was a joke:

Called before a judge, he said he made the gesture as a joke and apologized

Ok, we'll I won't get in your discussion (meaning you and Aivansama). Just tell who's the winner ;)

I am afraid I am going to lose. Knowing that beforehand helps dull the pain... :)
