A little more ridiculous then showing a boob i'd say...
Excellent!
"Let's see: three weeks ago this resulted in a little over 10.000$ fine. I wonder what happens today... Yes! It still works!"

Yes holding people in jail with an over 10,000 fine for "making an obscene gesture" is an excellent way to make money. Got to get as much money out of tourists as possible...i wonder if suspected murder has as high bail fines in brazil :?

Not if you don't stick up your finger when they take the photos ;)

Lol yeah for shame they conducted such a horrible offense.

Don't stick your tongue out either! Thats a 30,000$ fine. Only for tourists though.

Anybody know what that particular jesture means in Brazil, is it the same as for US or UK. I believe the same meaning in Italy for instance would be showing the palm of you hand and thrusting your arm in the direction of the person you are intending the insult.

Next week another pilot will be arrested and charged 15,000$ in Italy for streching...

...and three weeks later another one who tries if the trick still works...
:)

No, the next one will be trying to protect his eyes from the flash of the camera

After that we'll have people arrested in japan for wearing Mickey Mouse ears after their visist to Disney world...

Damn these harden criminals. :)

Again this only applies to tourists as they are the only ones who can afford it.

... while locals prefer to use the 17.000$ on wine and women instead.

Or prefering to keep their years salary.
What's the fun in that? :)

Don't know, ask the people who spend their year's salary in Brazil on wine and women.

Perhaps this money will go to support their families :p

He said money from the fine will be donated to two Brazilian charities for the elderly and children.

infact, this seems to be likely true :(

wow, lucky they have wealthy tourists to leech off of.

And a little more offensive than showing a boob I'd say...

What is the fine in other countries for showing that gesture?

And a little more offensive than showing a boob I'd say...

Really?

What is the fine in other countries for showing that gesture?

...most likely nothing unless of course you mean insulting an officer of the law. That would most likely vary by the severity of the offense. I'd say 12,000 or 17,200 USD in any country would be ludicrous ontop of arresting some one and holding them for a week then releasing them to armed custody.

Yep, really.

..which is a punishable offence is many countries.

I'd wholeheartedly agree.

Well, I think it has a lot to do with the Brazilians feeling insulted by the new U.S. policy. That's why they are so strict...

I really don't think brazilians were insulted. I think their officers were and found it fitting to take advantage of noncitizens.

They are insulted by the new US policy so they take it out on tourists? I really pitty they can't bare to have their pictures taken for security reasons. I imagine their policies only apply to American whites too btw. I hope they enjoy their political game. Hopefully it will hurt their tourism

To have one's fingerprints taken is sg what I'd call an intrusion into my private sphere. I personally do not like to be treated as a potential criminal.

I can understand that people feel offended and they're heading for revenge.
