AMD Mantle API [updating]

my i3 would love mantle, to bad mantle can't love my VLIW5 card :LOL:

really amazing gains with the slow CPUs on the PClab test, this is probably going to help a lot the laptops with GCN cards and i3s/i5s and AMD CPUs (as long as the GPU is not to slow)

ComputerBase use Windows 7 in their tests while PCLabs uses Windows 8.1. Battlefield 4 has some DirectX 11.1 features that boost performance on Windows 8.1 under CPU bound situation. With NV hardware the improvement is up to 50%:

So, no contradiction between both sites.

Apparently CB.de also did some tests with 290 on Windows 8.1 and they found that the differences is only 2-3 percent. Which is ironic considering AMD has been boasting full DirectX 11.1 support on their hardware.
 
I can't even try it out. Every time I hit "options" in the menu the game just locks up. Whether from the main menu or in game, it just freezes and I have to ctrl-alt-del to back to desktop. Then see an error message that BF4 has stopped. I've had the game for a while but haven't really played it so I don't know if that's anything new.

Edit: there's a thread on this subject at BF4's battlelog forum, it's already at page 2. So it's not just me having problem with "options" in BF4 with the latest patch + 14.1.

As operating system we rely on Windows 7 We also try using Windows 8.1 tested in Battlefield 4 wherein keep the differences from the older operating system limits. The power increases to the Radeon cards in two to three percent, greater differences we could not determine. And that applies to both Mantle and DirectX. Since the majority of our readers use Windows 7, we decided to use the more popular operating system for the test.

In case anyone else get the "options" menu (in BF4) lockup/crash, try disabling integrated graphics in Windows device manager. Worked for me, someone else at the BF4 forum figured this one out.
 
Hmm, I'm a little confused about the "cpu doesn't matter as much" talk going on. Doesn't mantle just mean we'll have better games with more physics, more particles, etc? If purposely designed for mantle..the CPU should soon be a bottleneck again in the very near future...only the games will be much better than in the Pre Mantle era.

as long as it only supports AMD GCN products they are going to have a hard time convincing people to develop games with Mantle as the main API, so I think treating mantle as an additional performance boost for CPUs more realistic.


anyway, looking trough websites it's clear that BF4 is a very complicated game to benchmark and look for CPU bound scenarios, considering the work with mantle and the importance of the title, it would be of great help to have some built in benchmark purposefully build to display a CPU bound situation, as close as possible to MP64 action?
or some option to record a demo from a MP match like the source engine games? I don't know how well that would represent the actual performance.

I makes me wonder just how many potential games weren't made because DX11 has held things back.

I don't believe there are no differences between Win 7 and 8.1. It is doubtful that the very large difference seen in the beta have vanished completely. And besides, they say they have tested this with Radeon cards. What about Nvidia which clearly massively benefited from 8.1 in the review from PCGH with the BF4 beta?

Thus the computerbase review is moot since it doesn't investigate the issue fully.

And the HardOCP review that was posted earlier also shows an increase with Nvidia cards when going to 8.1, at least in MP. The difference is almost 10%, so definitely not nothing.
