Well I agree with L-B's comment's that it was predictable and not really shocking news. When was the last time a highly anticipated piece of hardware didn't sell out on preorders?

I'm split two ways on it; I agree that it's generally the case that we could expect something like a new cosnole to sell out, but at the same time the increased launch quantities relative to previous console launches and the sky-high bundle prices had me thinkign it would sell-out more towards mid-November, as people start thinkign about their holiday shopping plans.
Though not shocking, at the same time I think it's indiciative of decent momentum on Microsoft's part, at least in the US.
I would be interested to know what the pre-order situation is in Europe actually, as that might be a better indicator of expected success abroad.
