An exciting amount of storage for sure. But what is sony expecting us to use all that space for when they don't allow homebrew software?

If they opened up the PSP, these memcards would be a lot more useful. Sure, some people might fill up a 4 or 8GB duo card with movies or music, but hey... This is a portable CONSOLE, not just a media player. Let's widen our horizons a bit shall we! :D

Ditto... I want homebrew on PSP sooooo bad! The possibilities..... <gasp>... I want a PSP linux kit!

Are they supposed to be opening it up for homebrew? I thought there were moves afoot to allow community development. Or am I dreaming?

By the time these big Memorysticks are affordable, there probably will be a PSP2 or a Nintendo handheld with 20GB harddisks.
I have a 1GB Memory Stick, and while it can store enough music or video for most needs, it soon gets too small if you want to store hundreds of music and a few videos. I'd rather keep say a weeks needs of files inside the PSP, than update the contents several times a week.
It would be great to have the complete 1st season of BSG readily available on PSP.

That sort of content I imagine they wouldn't want to allow if they have a download service. If it works on a pay per view basis anyway. If you can buy content over CONNECT and then copy it to computer too, and Sony sell it at a higher price than pay per view, then a large MemStick would be encouraged I guess.

Those memory sticks are going to be used for the downloadable game content on that new connect site. I wonder how that's going be like...

there are other devices who use memsticks also you know.... not neccesairely for psp use.

Well yeah...but the use of these memory sticks for the psp could be used for game downloads.

Well 2 GB sticks can be bought for under $130 now, so I can see 8 Gig sticks being a decent price by this Christmas season.

I'm quite sure they _will_ be used for game downloads - although not the kind of downloads sony had in mind, I'm afraid...

8GB already...I remember around the PSP launch a 1GB memory stick was going for the same price as a PSP on EBay. Then there was that "you're bidding on a link to cheap 1GB MS" auctions....insane. Now 2GB is $130 and 4GB and 8GB are on the way.
Maybe they'll be affordable by late 2007....maybe.

Of course Australia is screwed and pay $120 USD for a 1GB card - heavily discounted from the original MSRP :(

Isn't battery life liable to stink, comparatively speaking, with a Duo that size?

Why? A bigger size memory doesn't draw more power does it?
If you mean the battery would run dry before you'd be able to listen through all the songs you've put in an 8GB Memorystick, you're probably right, but that hasn't stopped Aple putting 30GB harddisks in hteir iPods. I'm sure you can't listen through all the songs or view through all the videos on an 30GB iPod before it's battery runs out.
So why do any manufacturer put a big mempry inside their portable if the battery won't last through it anyway... go figure ;)

Why should it? We are talking about flash RAM here, not DRAM with its need for refresh cycles.

Just thinking out loud (but not logically as you can see  ) because my PDA seemingly has lesser battery like with a 1GB SD card than a 128MB one. Makes sense though, cheers.
