3D Gaming*

Theater itself is flickery, flickering at 72Hz. sometimes it's more visible than others, because of the way the projector was set up, or the movie was shot, I don't know.
That may have been the reason for your bad experience. I wonder if the dual projectors were sync'ed well enough.

RealD and other polarized solutions show both images simultaneously
Not so ... generally only with IMAX Digital can you be relatively sure they use 2 projectors.

RealD sells Z-screens which alternates polarizations sequentially, which you put in front of a 144 Hz digital projector, unfortunately there is quite a lot of cross talk (this is I think the most common RealD setup). Masterimage has a mechanical system with a filter wheel, which though a little more old tech actually does it with less cross talk.

Nvidia's 3d Vision doesn't flicker at all, at least I'm not noticing it. I expected flickering similar to a 60Hz CRT monitor, but it simply isn't there.
As for specialized 3d games being easier on the hardware than Nvidia's 3d approach: Avatar takes the same framerate hit as every other game. It looks freaking incredible though. Much better than all the other games in 3d. All the other games just look like darker versions of their 2d counterparts with some added depth, with Avatar on the other hand you can really tell that the game was made to look good in 3d first and foremost. I thought the game looked kinda weird and fuzzy in 2d, but in 3d it all comes to together.
Really turned a mediocre game into an incredible experience for me.

I guess with both eyes viewing alternate 120Hz fields, the end result is equivalent to a 120Hz CRT, with image retention elliminating flicker.

Getting ready for 3D Blu-ray production:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4110

Panasonic unveiled its "fully operational" Blu-ray 3D Advanced Authoring Center located at Panasonic's R&D facility, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory. The Advanced Authoring Center was recently upgraded and equipped with the latest 3-D technological innovations, based on standards developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). It now offers studios and filmmakers image processing, interactive programming, authoring and disc certification services, which are capable of making Blu-ray 3D Discs commercially available as early as Spring 2010...

I'm curious whether it will be possible or not to make older stand-alone Blu-Ray players (with the 2.0 profile) 3d ready via a simple firmware update. While I do have a PS3 I'd still rather use my stand-alone player for movies. I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to excessive use of optical disc drives in consoles. (only disc drive that hasn't crapped out on me yet was the Gamecube's, but that thing has probably seen about as many hours of play time in total as just FFXII on my PS2)

They nickle and dime everything so that they have sufficient margin. If the rumor I heard about increased processing power for 3D BR player is true, then a new player is probably needed.

Acer 3D Monitor + nVidia 3D Vision = $600.
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...ty-four_Inch_3D_Display_is_Available_Now/4165

There’s a new 3D capable LCD on the market for only $399, but it’s not a TV.

It’s got a 16:9 aspect ratio, rather than the 16:10 ratio found in many widescreen computer monitors. The GD235HZ also sports has an impressive 80,000:1 contrast ratio.

The big news is in speed though. Acer’s new monitor has a ridiculously fast response time of as little as 2ms. It’s also one of few LCD computer monitors that hits the 120Hz mark

24 inch is too small for me. Waiting for a bigger and faster one. ^_^

If I'd use it for PC, and sit the distance I'm sitting now from my 22", then this thing would fill most of my field of view just fine so it's a good size for that kind of application. But for the living room of course I'd need something much bigger than this.

That size is actually good for me, because I play at a desk. If you had a PS3 hooked up, would this thing work with 3D bluray? They always specifically mention the Nvidia solution.

Edit: I found this blog and they do some ok reviews of 3D monitors. http://3dvision-blog.com/ They have some recent reviews too.

What's with people who think that 24" monitor is big enough for desktop use ? :p

I'll wait until Sony release their 3D firmware first, and then see which route to go. Need to have more 3D glasses choice too. I must say the Acer price is encouraging.

3x24 is big enough for desktop usage.

I couldn't imagine fitting 3x 30 inch monitors on my desk.

Ha ha, do you have a supreme being at home called 'wife' ?
3 x any sized monitor may land me in the garage.

I'll go with 1 x large enough 3D monitor.

EDIT: Actually, it's for my office PS3. I already have 7 screens in my room for different purposes. ^_^
Only going to replace one, for now anyway.

No but I have a mom and a gf . Both don't like the idea. But hopefully after a horrible last year with getting laid off Ifind something good this year and can cary on my plans to buy a home. I told my gf I get one room for my gaming. So I will put a 42inch tv in here or so and 3 gaming monitors for my pc.... and a couch..... and a huge bong....ohhhh and a mini fridge.... thats good stuff.

hmm think mabye i will build a small bathroom in that room that way Inever have to leave !

Anyway i like getting more of the world than 3d. Esp since 3d tends to give me headaches. I wouldn't mind both so I will slowly buy 3 120hz 3d gaming ready monitors later this year. my 4850 does the job right now and i can't convince anyone to buy me a 5870 anyway.

I have a 3 monitor setup with a TH2G and I just bought an NVidia 3D Vision setup.
I've been alternating which one I use, it's a tough call which adds more for gaming. I'll probably buy 2 more monitors for the 3D setup when NVidia gets it's act together and supports surround.

The big issue with 3D is the UI, having elements at a fixed depth over items that should be in front of them hurts the effect. It's really obvious in WOW where there is a lot of UI and you can togle it off to see the difference. Games designed for 3D can obviously resolve this, I just wonder how much adoption there will need to be before we see major changes in UI elements.
I tried playing Arkham Asylum with the iz3D drivers anaglyph mode, and thought the effect was kind of cool, but the eyestrain after just a few minutes was not worth it. A polarized or shutter setup wouldn't cause that immediate eye strain, but there's still the expense that makes me feel it's not worth it. I'd want my Eyefinity and 3D too, but the LCD tech isn't ripe enough to warrant shelling out for 3 monitors, and I only have room enough for 1 DLP projector (not to mention the inherent hangups of projectors, and significantly higher cost). I hope with Natal we get a headtracking component added to DirectX, as that would be 3D enough for me.

Meh... I am now convinced that head tracking and stereoscopic vision offer 2 totally separate benefits. The former will cause neck ache if you try to visualize the 3D-ness (There is no real 3D-ness to it). The latter will cause eye strain at least in the early days.

It's better to think of head tracking as "more freedom" (can view and aim independently) rather than 3D visualization.

Meanwhile, another 3D advertising:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...D_Advertising_Hits_Grand_Central_Station/4184

Grand Central Station is one of the busiest parts of the busiest cities in the world, and the perfect place to try new advertising techniques. Visa and CBS Outdoor have teamed up to do just that with their new 3D ads.

...

Every day between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, over seventy thousand pairs of 3D glasses will be passed out to commuters. The traditional 2D ads shown in the station will be replaced with 3D ads for the two hour period, and potential customers will get a chance to see 3D for free.
There will also be 3D dioramas scattered throughout the station that will be running throughout the day
