360s with 100GBs HDD soon?

*rumours, pinch of salt*

According to this post on XBox.com, there is an internal Best Buy document that says that new Xbox360 Premium systems will include a 100GB HDD instead of the previous 20GB HDD. This is a huge step up if true, the only reason we can see MS doing this is if that Direct TV downloadable TV show rumor was also true. Rumor mill for now. (Thanks, KPunk)

http://www.gamersreports.com/news/1713/" i work at bestbuy, Store located in New Jersey. Our Microsoft rep contacted our store, and spoke to my supervisor and told him that if we receive any xbox 360 Premiums, to hold them and cannot sell them until the end of March, she stated that the reason for this was because the xbox 360 premiums would be shipped with 100 gigabyte HDDs, instead of the 20 GIG HDDs avalible now, she also said that the 100 gig HDD premiums would sell for the same price of $400. In bestbuys retail weekly i also read that in the beginning of April bestbuy is doing a promotion from April 2nd until April 15th, this promotion has to do with the media department only, they stated that we will have a huge inventory of xbox 360s. I know that bestbuys inventory and promotion news is 100% offical, but the 100 GIG HDD is not 100% offical, but seems very likely."

Like I said, pinch of salt.. but they have some truth in them. DirectTV-connection with 360 is known and 20GBs hdd is to small for it. So maybe maybe..

Great news! Thanks!. Is there an upgrade path for those of us with 20G HDD?

Don´t know.. Like I said, things might not be true (at least not yet)... but I would expect that owners of 360 that wants a hdd, no matter if you have the premium/core pack must by it additionally..

If true, I would say that early adopters like myself got RAPED big time. I'm not too happy to dish out another 100$/e for a second harddrive...

Why would you HAVE TO buy an additional hdd if the 20GBhdd works fine? If you don´t want to erase stuff from your hdd, then you would have to buy a new hdd.. but the same goes for memory cards... if you don´t want to erase anything from mem-cards, you would to buy a new one.. right?

So.. you don´t have to buy a new hdd if you don´t super necessarily needed one... you can always manage your hdd...

True, but it's still quite close to the launch and surely you get much better deal with 100GB vs 20 GB, well I quess the bundles always get's cheaper or better in time so it remains to be seen whether this rumour is true, or more importantly when will it happen. I mean if it happens say next christmas, I'm fine with it, but if they start selling them with 100GB during april or may, I will feel a bit cheated.

My guess is that if anything, wait for E3 for an announcment. If the 100GB is Direct TV-related (which it should be) then I think that this will first be for the US market and later come for the rest of the world. I don´t think the 100GB will sell on all markets at once..

around christmas 2006 sounds reasonable..

Even if i dont need 100GB now, i'm fairly certain i WILL need more than 20GB before i trade this 360 in for a 720 or ps4 in 5 years.

SO while i would feel slighted by MS offering a larger unit this early on, i understand the risks of being an early adopter.

I wonder why they didnt jsut start off with the larger one then, must have been availability becuase i cant see it being cost, especially if this proves to be true.

And Dr. Evil, isnt there ANY word you could use besides 'raped' when talking about video games? Its a pretty strong and serious term that, imo, shouldnt be thrown around so lightly.

I dunno, 100GB 2.5" units aren't exactly cheap. The largest drive you can even get in that form factor is 120GB AFAIK. That they'd start putting 100GB units in premium systems SOON I see more or less as an impossibility, the harddrive alone would cost (considerably) more than the price premium between core and premium systems.

You're probably better off just getting Media Center PC, or Vista at the end of the year anyways, store all the directTV stuff on the PC. I'm not sure why you'd need a a bigger HDD for video files if you have MCE, I'm sure MS will support storage on the PC.

How will we transfer our files from the 20Gb HD to the 100GB HD? That to me is the biggest issue.

Why would you need to, you would just change them over, unless you plan on selling your 20 gb unit.

I was planning on getting a new HDD come FFXI anyway so this is good news for me.

Game saves obviously need to be transfered. Maybe MS will package a sata>usb adapter with the new HDD so you can plug your 20GB into one of the USB slots.

Game saves, Demos, Themes, Xbox live arcade games are stoered on the HD and would need to be transfered to the new HD. How can it if the new HD will fit in the same slot as the old one?

Well I certainly didn't want to offend anyone, and I quess I could have used some milder word, but I must say that it didn't even crossed my mind that it could offend someone, I understand that cussing/Extreme words are not so tolerated in some places (like USA), but I kind of meant it in a South Parkish way...

Interview with Todd Holmdahl:

ExtremeTech said:
ET: One of the problems people have with the current Xbox is getting data off their hard drive, backing it up. Some games simply don't let you copy their saves to the memory card, even if they fit. If your Xbox dies, all the stuff on your hard drive is gone forever. Is there a scenario in place to save the stuff on your Xbox 360 hard drive? If a higher-capacity hard drive did come out, how do I get my stuff off the 20GB hard drive and onto the 80GB one?

TH: We're not talking about the other scenarios right now, but we're certainly looking into ways to do what you're talking about.

ET: Even with the backwards compatibility…right away it's a problem. I want to play Fable on my Xbox 360; all my old Fable saves are on my Xbox hard drive and won't let me transfer them to a memory card.

TH: We're looking at different ways to do that right now, but we don't have a proposal that we're going forward with. We want to make sure it's something that we consider, and we understand the issues associated with it. If you do ever go to a different size hard drive, there's the issue of getting the data off and onto the new drive, and we want to make sure we satisfy that. I think Microsoft is well-positioned to be able to do that. The box is certainly powerful enough to do that. We just want to make sure we have the right set of tools to do that in the most efficient and effective way. One of the things that's so great about Xbox 360 is that it's just fertile with opportunity with what you could do with the box. You want to make sure you pick the right scenarios and you pick the right solutions to them. So we want to make sure we apply the right amount of thinking to solve those problems

Well the good news is that this was something they were considering very early on so I imagine they have a some solution planned and arent figuring it out after the hardware is in the hands of consumers.

Or maybe you can buy a second Xbox 360 to slap your new hard drive into, transfer the files over via ethernet, then put the new hard drive in your old 360...

It'd be almost a complete 180 from the present situation if Microsoft were to do this. To the extent that MS is selling the 20GB for a much higher price than need be (and enjoying decent margins on it as a result), to include a 100GB 2.5" drive would be to drive the HDD back into the red for them.

Not that it wouldn't be welcome mind you... just that I would find a policy swing to that extent to be somewhat bewildering. A 100GB drive I can understand, but there's got to be something else at play here. Maybe a DirectTV subscription or something?

Aren't some stores supposed to have download stations? Maybe they could setup transfer booths or something at the same time there.

Anyhoo... if they're outfitting 100GB drives with premium, my first thought would be a christmas promotion.

And...wouldn't the price of manufacturing 20GB drives eventually be costlier than 100GB drives anyway? (kinda like the situation with the first xbox, where later units actually had larger drives, but to keep within MS specs, they were formatted as 8GB.)

100GB drives starting in April? Around April 1st maybe?

Seriously, this is the Worst. Rumor. Ever.
