[360, PS3] Ninja Gaiden 2

In my experience, Eurogamer reviews are generally the most spot-on of all the big sites.

A 7 is of course not the definition of a "bad game" - just it's not an exceptional game. I'm certainly excited for NG2, even if it's just more of the same great gameplay of the previous game with much better graphics. Here's hoping it's either region free or not censored in Australia :(

Is it? Seems like some pretty fierce jaggies on the light on the left, for instance.

I wonder if that's because they resized a 1280x720 screenshot to what appears to be 1276x714. :???: In fact, quite a few of the screenshots there are 1276x714 (if not all).

Those lights may be suffering 'HDR'-itis, overbright that overrides the AA. The pics look pretty upscaled though, which doesn't look good for an engine that's already pretty backward.

...the shadowing and lighting is still very basic and doesn't seem to be that much different from the Xbox games.

Hmm...this seems to be a recurring theme with environments in Japanese made games lately. I wonder if it's because they just prefer a certain look to their games, or if its because western devs are going in new/different directions with their lighting models.

I was wondering the same myself, although I had trouble convincing myself it was an art choice. Still, too much dynamic lighting can make things hard to see in some cases. MUA is a great example of lighting gone bad, where a last-gen engine makes for a better game experience because you can actually see what's happening. There is a case to be made for an action game to have simplified lighting and shadowing to make the enemies clearer. Doubt you'll find many people supporting that viewpoint though!

...still, games like DMC4, MGS4 (based on MGO) or Yakuza 3 have exeptional advanced lighting with both soft shadows and self shadows. I think it is a Team Ninja thing, not a japanese thing after all.

Although DMC4 has good lighting, it does not have soft shadows. Nor does MGS4 (based on MGO), though they are much better than DMC4's

TN did experiment with self shadows though. *cough* DOAX2 *cough* Albeit, the game itself wasn't 60fps...

Didn't NG: Sigma have self-shadows?

Put it this way, I find I've stopped looking east for the console cutting edge. It seems, at least to me, to be mostly coming from the UK and USA which is surprising for consoles. I'm sure the games you mention above play fine, but visually they don't flip my frog. There's certain games out there like Uncharted, Gears, Bioshock, etc where I can't help but stop in the middle of a game and just look around, and think to myself "yeah, this is different". Ninja Gaiden, MGS4, etc, just don't give me that feeling. There's plenty of east and west games that visually leave me feeling dry, but I was expecting to be wowed by the top tier Japanese franchises and it's just not happening.

look, i don't wanna feed anyone my views, but DMC4 is easily top 3 this gen so far graphically. It is 60 fps and while the gameplay graphics are nothing short of amazing, the realtime cutscenes graphics are the best in any game so far. There are no tearing issues, framerate issues or pop ins like in the games you mentioned, nothing. Just so smooth and beautiful with big polygon numbers and very good lighting, animations and post processing effects.
MGS4 will undoubtedly be even better, and the upcoming Resident Evil 5 will also be a sight to behold most definitely so all i'm saying is don't count japanese developed games out of the picture just yet

Nah Heavenly Sword and Uncharted beat DMC4 for cutscene graphics. Yes Uncharted has recorded the ingame engine, but not all of HS's are.
