250GB hardrive add on announced for the 360

As mentioned in the other thread, copying media to the HDD is not the usage model for the 360. The usage model for the 360 is to attach an external USB drive containing those files, or to access them across the network. The 360 is not a media storage device, it's a media player device. You can debate whether that is good or bad, but this is one of the reasons why HDD replacements are more fundamental to the PS3 than to the 360. The 360's HDD is only for games, and 250 GB is only useful for those who buy games-on-demand.

Huh? Says who????

MS allowed HD game installs so it's pretty damn obvious you're going to need to upgrade the HD to a bigger one when your game library increases. I don't have ANY movies or music on my 60GB HD but it's full now so I'm gonna have to get a bigger HD in order to install the rest and future games. I never upgraded to the 120GB HD because they have ripoff prices. With this lower priced 250GB HD I can upgrade my Xbox and still be able to use my old 60GB on another Arcade model that has no HD.

As far as streaming stuff from a PC.....LMAO that's soooooo last year man....yeah like everyone wants their PC turned on for no apparent reason using electricity and creating waste heat.

I'd rather stream from a HUGE 500GB or 1TB USB HDD but of course MS doesn't allow this because they wouldn't be able to sell overpriced HDDs...

Now they're allowing only 16GB devices...LMFAO!!! Welcome to last decade...

Uhm. You can play media from large USB storage just fine on a 360 today (although FAT32 imposes some limitations). The new 16GB thing is for game data and system storage which wasn't allowed previously.

I really wouldn't want to fight a bullet war. My main point was that I already had a bt headset as I use one with my phone (and it happens to work with ps3 and my netbook(skype) too) and I also had the logitech wheel before ps3(due to ps2/pc, coincidentally I also have some extra 2.5" drives I could use with arcade model but then again I cannot...). I just like when same thing works on multiple devices and I don't want to go to vendor lockins. The headset that came with xbox360 is actually pretty sucky plain model, if I gamed a lot online I would be purchasing a better one...

Thats great for you. I had a $400 harmony remote that works with everything except my psp and i had to buy a 50 usb dongle for my ps3 to get it to work

Like I said , the ps3 has just as many lock ins as the 360. I have a 500 gig 3.5inch hardrive i'd love to put in my ps3.... See how it works.

I could similarly list a lot of things I don't like in sony/ps3 side of things. All in all I really like the xbox360 and it's a nice entertainment system. It's just that it's pretty difficult to hold straight face and say the hd addon isn't expensive :D Didn't expect it to cause such an uproar which it unfortunately did(and then all the offtopic that pursued is unfortunate side effect). I think I have become somewhat price sensitive as I try to spend money smartly and save some to be able to retire at some point. Those small savings actually cumulate over the years and turn into something useful.

The con of the 360 drive is its expense . The pro is its ease of use. For you putting in a 2.5inch drive for the ps3 or a computer is easy. How about the average gamer ? Whats easier to do the ps3 or the xbox 360 ? For many the ps3 method would require extra cost as they need someone to install it for them or they could break something or loose thier data.

I think others have mentioned th 360 is more of a streaming system and not one you load tons of vido and pics to. Media center on it is really good and many people will use it that way or stream netflix. The hardrives are mainly for game content. Installs or DLC. So for many 60 , 120 , 250 are ore than enough.

No, it would be exactly the same. You can put any 2.5" SATA drive in that enclosure. MS went out of their way to lock them out. Technically speaking, had they not done that, the system would have been slightly cheaper to develop as they wouldn't have had to pay the programmer to make the code to lock them out.

Also, I paid less for my 1.3 terabyte harddrive a while back....

It seems you didn't understand what I meant. The Arcade model can be sold at a lower level, because MS can get money "back" with the HDD and other accesories. If MS didn't have this accessory revenue stream, the console itself would be more expensive.

And please if you quote multiple people in one post, make it clear who you are quoting. With the multi quote feature, it should't be much harder than what you are currently doing.

Ah, that is a good point.

I was unaware of such feature, thanks!

I want to add that HD cables do not come standard on 360 elites anymore.
But how hard is it to order whatever you want from monoprice.com?

Oh goody. Yet another thread descends into an Xbox/PS3 slanging match filled full of unreadable posts.

Didn't expect too see people trying to defend a piece of hardware/company so hard on this forum.
Rumors are the 250 gig will be as low as 100 euro it contains a cable to transfer your data to your new disk. Yeah i know that 100 euro is still much for that amount of space. But the buyers can easily swap their hdd. its actually kinda shocking for me i mean i was almost at plan to buy later this year a 120 gig hdd for almost 100+ euro.

So yeah this is a nice surprise for me and with a potential 360 slim coming im gonna wait till E3 this year to invest in either a 250gig hdd or the slimline 360.

With this post, I think you're just being argumentative. Using Media Center to stream stuff is soooo last year? Why do you think Media Center was bundled with every Vista/Win7 computer in the past 3 years? It's there so you can stream your media to devices like a 360!

yeah like everyone wants their PC turned on for no apparent reason using electricity and creating waste heat.

Uh.... compared to the console, the average PC (which is, on average, a laptop) uses a small fraction as much electricity. You might as well worry about the electricity used by your router.

I'd rather stream from a HUGE 500GB or 1TB USB HDD but of course MS doesn't allow this because they wouldn't be able to sell overpriced HDDs...

Lol... don't you realize this is exactly what the 360 wants you to do? What you describe is exactly the preferred usage of the 360, and it excels at this, and it supports more/better disk formats than the PS3. What exactly are you trying to argue with this post? Are you actually informed about the 360's capabilities?

NTFS via networking & Media Center.

Oh. That's not quite what I meant.

PS3 can do NTFS or anything via networking.

And media center isnt a harddrive format...
That's like me saying I can use anything in PS3 linux, which actually runs on the PS3.

Mod: Removed OT signature talk, something for PM

Uh...in order to stream from a PC BOTH the PC and the Xbox has to be on. That means more noise and wasted power just to do something so stupidly basic. At least if you're streaming from a portable HDD you don't need to turn the stupid PC on. Regardless whether you're streaming from a desktop or notebook, it's still stupid and redundant. Last time I checked most people who used Windoes MCE install it on thier "desktop media server" not some stupid laptop...lol. The best device for low power streaming is NAS anyway not some stupid full blown PC. As for portable HDDs you cannot use them to install games so when my game library gets bigger my little built-in HDD gets full...understand?

So if I have a collection of DVD movies ripped into a WMV HD file it'll be limited to 4GB if it's using NTFS?

If you have a fat 32 file structure on the formated drive yes.

If you have NTFS or HFS+ you shouldn't have a problem.

Although what the heck are you doing ?

Dvd movies are 480p why would you upscale them to WMV HD ? IF you use VC-1 codec in wmv hd to compressed the file you will end up with a much smaller size than 4GB while having the same image quality of the dvd
