1080p vs 1080i

How long before HD tv's are affordable?
i.e when can I get a good 35 incher in the us for under a grand?
I believe today.

THere are some 50"+ CRT projection ones available for $1500 or so.

Me needs to get a job at good guys, my sister in law's fiance works there, I could get a discount anyway, but I chose to be a slacker and not have a job while im taking 12 units

After having my LCD (720p) for a good 5-6 months, and my buddy who has a 50 inch Samsung DLP (720p), I can't go back to interlaced output. It would be like going back to dial-up!

p is better than i any given day. :)
Not quite true. Interlace is better for sports (more temporal sampling), progressive is better for stills (single sampling point)
I disagree. Progressive is better for sports. Fast motion results in tearing when viewed interlaced. If 1080p is indeed only 30Hz then it's difficult to say how it would compare to a 60Hz 1080i signal, but stations are picking 720p for sports because a lower resolution progressive signal is better than a high resolution interlaced signal when viewing fast motion.

Yea, I've always though Progressive (720P for example) was better for motion and 1080i for sharper but more static screens.

The question was 1080i/30 vs. 1080p/30.

Not 720p/60 vs. 1080i/30

Well then i still don't understand. That 1080i/30 should read 1080i/60, right? Otherwise 1080p should still be better than 1080i, since the sampling is the same but the resolution double.
I guess you mean 1080i/30 like today's 480i/30, which actually runs at 60Hz. That would make sense.

1080i/30 runs at 30 frames per second, with each frame composed of 2 fields that are sampled at 60Hz. (So there's temporal sampling at 60Hz at half the resolution)

So it's 1080i/60, like today's 480i/60. Cool, now i understand.
