¿Why the next-gen consoles need 64 bit cores as main CPU?

Can you explain to me the why and the cause of this.

¿Or it is pure marketing from for their 64-bit CPU?

First, the consoles won´t have more than 512MB, the 64 bits for redirecting memory is unnecesary.

Second. ¿Is more faster a code build in 64 bits mode than a code build in 32 bits mode? My G5 cannot get the difference, but perhaps the problem is my G5.

Simply, 64 bit processors can address more than 4 GB of memory...

I think Urian understands that, that is why he said:

i.e. Consoles wont have more than 512MB, so one of the chief advantages of 64bit processor (the ability to address more than 4GB of memory) is not relevant.

Urian, I am sure there are a lot of reasons, but I think the primary one is IBM is leveraging their current tech which includes 64bit. All three companies have signed up with IBM to some degree and will be using PPC cores, which currently are 64bit at the top end. These clients are looking for the newest technologies that their 64bit chips have, so there would be little point to take step backwards to a 32bit core but get all the new goodies they have desgined into the new chips (that have a broad array of uses). It would be more work to do this. It is just easier to keep the 64bit core that has been natively engineered to work with their other advancements.

To a lesser degree cross platforming and future console compatibility may be relevant, but I think the above reason is the most clear. I am sure others can give other technical reasons why 64bit processors have advantages.

...

Huh?

I thought it was obvious but just to make it clear, all operating systems are going/ gone 64 bit. And these consoles will be based on a subset of these OS's...and all the chip manufacturers processors roadmaps are pointing in that direction...

Hahahaha, well I'm not american so they don't ;) I'm Canadian, but it's still funny. Hey that smells like fromunda!
