Dc comics mmorpg (ps3 game ? )

I have a feeling it will be more akin to City of Heroes in that you aren't necessarily the well known super hero.

The cities like Gotham, Metropolis, and the others will be some of the areas you can go to but you won't be able to be Superman. That just doesn't work out at all for balance (unless you plan on having like 5 people total playing the game) -- there is only one Superman, so everyone can't be him -- same with batman, green lantern and the others.

I wouldn't be surprised to see you able to play evil side -- maybe take on Superman as a 'raid' ;)

Same with good side and bad guys like Lex luthar, etc.

City of Heroes in the DC universe is about what I'm expecting (maybe some other gameplay elements changed, but overall that is about what I would expect -- at least how the characters are).

Surely an MMO isn't going to have players playing as major characters. Once Batman, Superman, and whoever else is taken, that's an MMO of what...100 characters?!

Seems to me more likely you pick and choose powers to make a custom character in the universe, with the existing characters being NPCs, and scope to build more powerful superheroes (which kinda goes against the superhero concept, but makes for levelling which is what people want)

Well that's not right!!
I'd take that if eventually a maxed out Superman (in full FF style) could do anything he's supposed to do.
What era ? If we are talking pre crisis he could move the planet and travel time . IF we are talking now , he isn't the strongest in the dcu anymore . Supergirl would actually be somewhat stronger from what we gather and the same goes for doomsday. Grogg is also stronger as he is from the future and uses his power to attack superman and when he takes damage a healed version apears to help or in the latest line an army of groggs come and age superman and kill him thus turning doomsday into a hero who makes the league of supermen to fight grogg at the instance superman dies .... yea head trip .

And this is just as unfair!!

If Batman can just build or buy a "kill superman" weapon, that's just as unfair as having Superman snap his fingers and kill him. Isn't it?
Superman gave batman a kryptonite ring. Batman also made a red hybrid type kryptonite .

I mean is it fair superman can just burn batman into dust ?

The exact solution is in the second sentence, but that's also what will detract from a game set in the DC Universe. For it to be fair and balanced you simply can't be allowed to be like any of the major characters for as long as anyone wants to be able to play as a lesser powered character and still enjoy themselves. To make it fair players will have to make compromises in their character but, as you highlighted below, most of the major characters don't have much by way of compromises.
Sure you can . Listen readers of batman don't expect him to fight doomsday . Just like fans of superman don't expect him to hit up his fortress and use his dective skills to solve a crime . If you pick a batman type char your going to be involved in tons of martial arts battles. If you pick a superman type character your going to be engaged in huge fist fights with no grace just power .

The problem here is that Batman's mental superiority is a storyline benefit, Green Lanterns powers are tangible and realisable through the game engine. For this comparison of how Batman can use his mental abilities to give him an advantage you would have to let the Batman type player have a concept of the situation he was going into and plan it almost Rainbow Six style, while the super-powered player would have to go in blind and you'd still have to hope the Batman type player was intelligent enough to make this work.
Well a gl is limited by his imagination and will power . If your able to distract him he will not be able to hold his contructs or if your able to blind him he will not be able to form them (from dc story lines )

As for planing it out ahead. I agree it will be hard but they can make it work . If your the villian i don't see why you wouldn't have traps set , thats basic villiany 101 . For characters like superman since they have the brute force they rush in . Batman like characters they plan what they are going to do .

Okay, this could work, have a "players lounge" where the heroes can get together to talk and socialise, but when they go into the game aproper they are split into different zones depending upon their range of powers, so the more powerful characters are kept seperated from the "powerful human" type characters.

THey can do that . I was also thinking if they do super teams you can all meet on your moon base or whatever and get missons to complete. A green lantern would get space missions and a human would get city based missions . Then if you group its an earth based mission but its equal parts stealth and equal parts brute force .

Really its hte pvp that would be a bitch to do . Then again they don't have to do pvp . Coh didn't have pvp and eq2 doesn't have pvp .

That's the problem, "1 weakness". Where does the average player find Kryptonite while wandering the games cities?
Well actually in batman superman 11 i believe a huge chunk of krypton almost smashed into earth and it was destroyed before it could but dumped tons of kryptonite onto the planet which the heros cleaned up so superman wouldn't die . If they base the dcu after this event (they will most likely base it after this upcoming crisis they are building towards ) kryptonite shouldn't be that uncommon.

Now in regards to your suggestion. You could also create batarangs with shards of kryptonite in them that expload . You can turn it into a liquid and shoot him with a dark gun. You can make a laser gun out of it . You could set up the fight where supermans speed and flight powers are no use to him . Superman actually has 3 weaknesses. Magic , kryptonite and red solar energy .

If your the villian superman would come to your lair . You can have the lights generate red solar engery , have a magic sword with a kryptonite shield and kill superman . or whatever .

Against a green lantern you can use a qwardian ring which is a yellow ring instead of green .

In a marvel game your going to have the same problems. You have your ultimate heros in that too. How is cyclops going to beat the hulk ? How is jubelee goign to be thor ?

Remember there was once 3600 green lantenrs and didio (i hate him so so much ) wnats to double that with the new series . I hope it fails and they kick hal out again and bring back kyle personaly .

So while there will only be 1 superman , i can see green lanterns flying around .

Personally I really hope someone does something similar with the Marvel Universe, I'm personally far more of a fan than of DC where I'm reallyonly a Batman fan.
Thankfully though, as it's an MMORPG the main DC characters won't appear in playable form, the one thing I've always disliked about DC comics is the lack of balance in the characters, there are just too many over-powerful characters IMO, hence Batman being by far my favourite DC creation.
as i said , i didn't expect sony to make this game , i would think with thier close ties with marvel they would have done that . As for dc ... well they make batman the most powerfully character in the dcu . He wins off panel all the time which is why i dislike him .

as for your other thoughts really they have things balanced out properly . You don't see superman going up against a lower powered villian , he goes after the big guys that can affect him. However you see someone like the ray 2 go up against these lower villians .
Marvel gave the rights to Vivendi a few years back, I believe.

I agree though, I think it will be like CoH in the DC universe. Just like you can't use Statesman or any of the other legendary Heroes, you can interact with them, etc. etc. etc.

Currently EA has the rights to superman, so sony won't be making a superman game any time soon.
are u sure that is still valid ? I thought that ended a few years ago .

They probably snatched the rights in anticipation of the movie.. sneaky buggers...

Still, that shouldn't preclude the release of DC based videogames or material, where Superman might make an appereance.

Like there were more LOTR games than the EA ones. EA had the rights for the movie, with all the material and the faces and everything from the movies, but Universal still released a LOTR game based on the books.

as far as i know it's still valid, they haven't completed the game yet, it's still in development.

even so , i don't think ea will care about superman as a non playable character in a mmorpg . I highly doubt they have anything planed like that and as long as you can't be him i don't see ap roblem

Yeah that's true, but I am hoping EA can do what no other company has yet to do, make a good superman game.

There was a superman arcade game in the 80s i used to play at orange lake in florida. That was a fun superman game . Alos the death of superman was fun . Then there was that other genesis game that wasn't to bad

I wanna see Superman cut out a chunk of a mountain with his heat vision and then chuck that piece at a bad guy. 8) Damn being close to kryptonite

All I care about is that my Station Access pass just got more valuable right now. ;) (Even if the Matrix Online seems to be a bit of a whiff right now. Free game is a free game! Hehe...)

The DC MMO I'll reserve comment on until a lot closer to release, as I have no real way to judge right now. City of Heroes is really neat and simultaneously terrifically crap in so many ways, it's just hard to comment. Implementation matters so damn MUCH, even in a superhero game (which by and large has more room to be screwy with than other games, IMHO) that there's nothing to go by and no way to tell from this far out. I suppose I could go into a lengthy discussion about CoH and say what I'd LIKE to see from the next superhero game, but the concerns are very weird and varied, so I'd rather see more of a framework first. And that kind of discussion more belongs in the Games forum anyway. ;)

So here, I'll comment on the console-related matters. No, I won't buy a MMO for a console, because like FPSes and RTSes, there are simply genres that take to the PC so much better; those you want keyboards/mice to control. And no, I really want to hook up a K/M to my consoles, as it would be a pain in the ass and unless they're delivering content I would be moronic NOT to want, I figure I can pass up on it just fine.

On the HD concerns, I'm not actually too concerned about MMO's, as these are games where the public is specifically knowing they WILL be paying a lot, so "paying some more" to get a HD won't ultimately matter too much. It's the general gaming and non-MMO's that suffer because of a lack of mass storage built-in.

...and otherwise, I'm mainly intrigued to see what kind of a game they'd be able to whip up on the PSP. ^_^ Taking a MMO on the MOVE...! Now that's interesting. ;) Will it let me play the same character on a raid in the bathroom without interrupting anything, I wonder! Hehe...

Sony will probably release all their MMORPGs in some PS3 + HDD deal...would be a good way to sell the PS3. Would be nice for their station access pass.

Station Access pass is already damn good even if you only like TWO of their games. ;) It's actually much better than I expected. (When I was talking about them bundling their games long before they did it, I assumed they'd take a "graduated" scale and just make each additional MMO you add cost less and less. I didn't expect them to throw in ALL their games at "MMORPG-and-a-half" price, that's for sure.

I guess they ran the math, though, and figured out getting ANY people in for a bit extra is simply worth it, as not too many people support two MMO's at once otherwise (which would cost more), and they sell more games and expansions for them as well.
