The thing for me is, despite a lack/failure of some big exclusives, the Series consoles+Gamepass have been absolutely fantastic gaming for our household. My daughter and I are not a console market though!
Glad thats been the case for you. Gamepass is solid and I think its going to get better, I just dont agree with some of the ways MS is running the Xbox brand. Mentioning play time with the fam wish there were more local coop games available on Gamepass.

This year's first Developer Direct is on the 23rd Jan. Doom, South of Midnight, Expedition 33 and mystery.

Last year's mystery was the HiFi Rush shadow drop.

in your case, I'd wholeheartedly recommend you the PC local co-op games thread in the Games forum. Some great recommendations there:

Halo: MCC and Flight Simulator 2024 will come to PS5 and Switch 2 according to some insider.

It begins... He says. He mentions that those two are just the start of the many many Xbox games that are going to be published on PS5 and Switch 2.

Video should start at the exact time he talks about that.

Everyone benefits from the strategy of MS games being released on multiple platforms. This is actually a better way to ensure that Xbox games are more successful and popular. In addition, it feels very good that these games appear in Day1 Gamepass for both Xbox console and PC, so that we Gamepass users can play them at a much more favorable price. :)

Moreover, as MS games start to flow more and more, the Gamepass service will become more and more valuable.

Do note that the talk was about Predictions. This same exact thing was said for last year. Keep saying it and maybe it'll come true.

Summary from baiisun:
Nate also predicts that Final Fantasy XVI will be at the dev_direct and will be shadowdropped like they did Death Stranding. And they will also confirm that FF7 Remake and Rebirth will come to Xbox soonish.

So according to Nate and Rand predictions we could get a 2025 like this:

Feb: Avowed
Mar: Towerborne (Colt & Magg leak)
Apr: South of Midnight (prediction)
May: Doom The Dark Ages (prediction)
Jun: Oblivion Remaster/Remake (leak)
Summer: Gears Collection (Prediction)
Aug: The Outer Worlds 2 (Prediction)
Sep: Gears E-Day (Prediction)
Oct: Call of Duty
Dec: Fable (Prediction)

+ Starfield DLC and Indiana Jones DLC

Summary from baiisun:
those predictions don't mention Halo MCC...., but if Halo MCC comes to PS5 and Switch 2 that's going to be huge, it will sell like hotcakes. Many people who have a Playstation and a Switch want to play Halo on their consoles.

Any actual evidence of that? Might be true, but I couldn't state it authoritatively without some sort of proof.

the people I know who have one of those consoles. Might not be the most representative sample crowd though. Old school stuff maybe, when the Halo hype was at its peak. For younger people Halo isn't what it was.

One of my favourite streamers completed Halo 3 ODST as of recently and she liked the game very much, she is young. But yeah, who knows. Halo 3 ODST and Halo Reach are probably the best Halo games along with Halo 1.

Main 'issue' I have is Halo doesn't have the shooter crown the brand was known for. There have been many, many shooters since then, and the forever games are full of them. I think in the same way some Sony franchises failed to set the PC alight, MS might find some of their strongest XB brands aren't as well received on other platforms as the people most interested already owned them on an MS system.

Note good new games will still sell as well as good games from anywhere, so a new top-tier shooter in the Halo universe might sell well across all platforms, but not sure old, good games will sell strongly.

Good luck with spending shitloads of money clearing all the rights for what will most probably be very small returns. Most (NOT ALL!) games that have a market have been ported, and the people that care the most have probably already gone the piracy emulation route.
Sarah Bond mentioned how important is software preservation. No OS has the history of Windows when it comes to that.

And after seeing how they used the GTA 3 port of the PC version to create a new Dreamcast version in a DF Retro video, I'm more hyped about the idea of them doing something interesting with all those abandonware catalogues and whatnot.

You can make money making people's life easier, creating a DOSBox store, a MAME store, a Commodore store, etc. GoG became very popular thanks to their preservation of classic Windows games.

I think many poeple dont like where this is going as they pivot from traditional operating norms, but it seems that its working

I was listening to a podcast where they mentioned that currently xbox revenue has overcome windows os revenues (i cannot find figures that confirms that thou), and xbox division is telling shareholders that there more xbox players then ever was.
It seems that they are trying to create a diffrenet niche for xbox, rumors about third parties creating xbox devices, xbox app will be available on LG tvs, cloud, play anywhere etc etc
Time will tell, but i can see that in my steam account as a review for 2024 i had only 4 games played, almost all my activity comes from pc and xbox playing gamepas games.

Unfortunately this is solely because of the Activision acquisition. The increase in revenue is in the MS Gaming division(very smart decision to rebrand the whole gaming away from Xbox) and not Xbox. If they are able to show gaming revenue growth in the coming quarters driven by something other than the Activision acquisition then that will be impressive. Otherwise there may be negative pressure on COD to drive revenue growth.

“53 points of net impact from the Activision acquisition,”

Does that mean 8% growth from elsewhere?

True
  • · Windows OEM and Devices revenue increased 2%
  • · Xbox content and services revenue increased 61% driven by 53 points of net impact from the Activision acquisition
  • · Search and news advertising revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs increased 18% (up 19% in constant currency)
if we exclude ACtivision is only 8% wich is perhaps not bad as this was not the best year for msft and consoles are not selling well. This year should be better with games like Doom, Fable and South of Midninght, we will see next year if this is only clever accounting.

Goes to show just how strong the Xbox brand is that it achieved 8% growth despite all this.

Might not be the brand per se. If a bunch of high-revenue titles selling DLC launched, they could account for more content revenue. Isn't there also the GP price increase from last year in effect?
