Can we just take a second to appreciate Uncharted 4 and what Naughty Dog were doing in 2016 and earlier

Pardon the terrible upload quality.. the game is 100% smooth the entire time in reality.. but that whole entire sequence is just crazy. The visuals all these years later are still up there with the best of them.. and the crazy amount of objects and physics and enemies and just everything happening so fast. It's incredibly impressive. From the standard run and gun/cover based combat, to speeding down a hillside town in a Jeep being chased by an armored vehicle, to swinging/dangling from the back of vehicles on a rope through the mud as other vehicles chase you to jumping in the back of said vehicles shooting at enemies, then jumping from vehicle to vehicle to eventually crash in a cutscene and then watch as the game transitions to a into-the-camera chase sequence with incredible flair and destruction and physics... all seamlessly.. while looking top of class visually.

I mean imagine being the people coming up with these ideas and then figuring out how the hell you're going to make it work. That entire sequence was literally them flexing their prowess at this dynamic type of gameplay. Remember in Uncharted 2 with the building collapse while you could run around and shoot enemies? Or the train sequence in Uncharted 2, which by all metrics was insane back then as well. Uncharted 3's cargo plane sequence.. All of it is top tier. The Lost Legacy also has an incredible train sequence as well.

Imagine what Naughty Dog could do with an Uncharted game on PS5. This isn't an exaggeration.. Nathan Drake and Uncharted are responsible for Sony being the company they are today.. and for good reason. People eat this stuff up. Yes it was time for a break from Uncharted, but this series really allows Sony and thus Naughty Dog to flex their cinematic muscles in ways that other games mostly still have yet to match. I can't wait to see what's next from them.

Yes the visual quality still pisses on most games today. It's still up there with the best.

Today 87 people were killed and many more were seriously injured during a firefight between the army and a group of us terrorists that stole a car and started shooting in the public market and driving it through buildings.
Many people have been left without a home.
More insights in the 6pm edition.

I did convert back to Sony with the trailer of Uncharted 4 being promo for the PS4 on PS reveal...
I remember I was still reading about the rumors the "next gen" here on B3D and I was big time fan of Xbox 360.. So I really inclined to move to XBone when that thing came out... but reading about the power gap on the PS4 versus the xbone and that presentation for the xbox tv thing made me look again at Sony...

Then Sony showed that beach scene as a render target for the Uncharted 4 and I was sold...

The final game didn't look 100% as good but it was close enough.

It's mighty impressive how good the characters look to this day.

I remember playing this game all the way through on PS4 and being blown away. Which is weird since I've never owned a PS4 and for the life of me can't remember where I had access to one.

If we're appreciating Uncharted, gotta bring up Uncharted 2. Arguably even more impressive considering it ran on PS3. Also it's simply the best Uncharted game. I rented it from Blockbuster who went out of business before I returned it. I still have it laying around somewhere in the Blockbuster case. Is this a collector's item or something?

Uncharted was a fantastic accomplishment as a whole. In terms of cinematic execution, the set-pieces have not been matched for me. Some of them were so good that some movies borrowed ideas from it. However, I doubt that the original team is still there anymore. What they've put out so far after Lost legacy has not come close to matching the set-pieces of old.

The burning village invasion in the end of TLOU2 is pretty impressive IMO.

for comparison

This comparison highlights the artistic merrits of Uncharded over Spiderman. In the latter, the polygons and textures are all in there, but the crafting of each asset is not at the same level as those of Uncharted. Spiderman asset quality is still excellent, up there among the best, which is even more inpressive considering the scale and scope of that game. But still, they look less organic and life-like than the UC characters. You can tell way more time was put on carefully crafting of each skin wrinkle and pore on the skin of each model for that game. In a very loose and crass analogy, UC4 feels like a high-quality PS5 game downported to PS4, while Spiderman 2 feels like a PS4 game remastered for PS5.

Spiderman looks like a high quality videogame character. To me Nathan Drake's face tells a story. I think this changes the way my brain perceives the graphical quality.

I wonder of someone who's never played either games and is shown the models with no context would see the same thing.

I have played neither game, the first video has "plastique" skin and hair clipping (the collar, in that back of the neck) and also superior lighting in the second video.
They are cleary generations apart.

Let's not exaggerate. It was a very good looking game with beautiful animations and it still looks good to this day, but it's definitely not up there with the best of them and hasn't been for a few years.

I'm not exaggerating. Very few games have better production values, better animations, and attention to detail.

The comparison is quite unfair. The scene in which Spiderman 2 is shown is from a very curated special gameplay section, therefore the lighting system and character lod are designed to give the highest possible fidelity that otherwise is uncommon during normal gameplay sections. Whereas the Uncharted one was taken from a normal gameplay scene.

edit: Just see here in a better situation how good Drake's model can look
