Current Generation Games Analysis Technical Discussion [2024] [XBSX|S, PS5, PC]

I've already been banned here for trying to argue anything with pricing related by somebody who insisted that there's literally no relationship between what it costs to make something and what it costs to us, none whatsoever, and made it clear I am not allowed to disagree or make any sort of common sense arguments against it or its obvious relation to value expectations and whatnot with modern hardware.

I'd have to make my arguments based around these things, and it's been made clear to me I'm simply not allowed to.

Well to be fair that’s what the economics textbooks teach. Cost is only relevant for setting a price floor. It doesn’t in any way dictate a price ceiling.

Either way it’s not a winning argument. What makes you think Nvidia is making egregious profits on the 4060/4070? They sold you a $600 314mm^2 GP104 in 2016 and now they’re selling you a 294mm^2 AD104 for $800. Where’s the profiteering?

Then you didn't understand. Civil discussion is allowed, and wanted. Calling people dumb for disagreeing with you isn't. Getting emotional over a chat isn't, and bringing in emotions from elsewhere isn't.

If there's value in this technical discussion about current games analysis on the pricing of GPUs, it's worth having. That said, the costs of things is almost always an Industry discussion, not a technical one.

Is the price of GPUs really a games analysis discussion? Maybe take that conversation to Games Industry or some more apt discussion. Feel free to start a new thread.

All these Lego games have typically had some nice graphics to them, but again, if you asked 100 people, most all of them would still say Forbidden West looks better and I think it's pretty obvious why.

You keep stating this as though it's obvious and beyond disagreement, but I don't think it is at all.

As already noted in this thread, Lego Horizon is a gorgeous game. Comparing it to Forbidden West is probably futile in the first place given their wildly different art styles but I would argue at least that Lego Horizon more convincingly achieves the look it's aiming for than FW does insofar as Lego Horizon wants to look like you're playing with real life Lego pieces (which it pretty much does) while FW wants to look more like stylised photorealism which it falls a good way short of. Granted the latter is a much more difficult goal to achieve so that's not a knock on FW, but the end result is that I'm more convinced by what Lego Horizon is showing me than I am by FW. And for me, that's more impressive.

I started Stalker 2 on XSX. Amazing game. Hard even on easy difficulty, many things to learn, very big map, and map is not empty. It's like in Skyrim, where you can find something new every 2-3 minutes of walking. Graphics is just great. Better only in Hellblade 2, but only a little bit. But Hellblade 2 is a small game, Stalker 2 is huge. Also resolution is a lot higher in Stalker 2. Top moments for me are amount of geometry and lighting. So maybe 9th gen consoles will be used properly after all. Now I played 2 games on XSX, what shows what 9th gen is. Interesting, (but this is only my opinion), PS consoles for years are great graphics machines because Sony have very talented studios, there is PS5 Pro now, but games with top graphics for now are on Xbox. Also Indiana Jones game will be released in less than 3 weeks. And for next year there will be some games what can be with better graphics than Hellblade 2 and Stalker 2, but still no word about any game for PS. And that's sad to be honest, because I have PS5 for more than 1 year and 90% of games I played are crossgen games. Will be interesting to see how XSX will hold against PS5 and PS5 Pro next year and ahead.

Yea I heard if you like Fallout and like that style, this game will speak to you.

I am also excited to try this one out. My 3070 may struggle though, Blackwell needs to come soon!

I bought it and started in on it on PC at lunch too. Initial impressions are positive, although it definitely is a system-destroyer.
Has a mandatory shader precaching step at launch which is nice to see, and it hasn't been super stutter-y for me, at least by UE5 standards, in the first hour or so.

i5-13600k + 3080 10GB, and running at 1440p Epic settings, in DLSS performance mode, so 50% resolution scale or 720p internal resolution.

Kind of like Alan Wake 2 on PC which I also played with max settings including path tracing at a 720p-ish internal rendering resolution, DLSS seems to be particularly effective in this game, at least more so than most, and I'm averaging 60-90fps or so. Switching to DLAA definitely makes the image a bit sharper, but not nearly enough to justify the performance hit on my rig.

We will find out soon enough because Stalker 2 is only a timed exclusive for Xbox. I fully expect Death Stranding 2 to go for the graphics crown next year.

Like I said, this forum is a super weird outlier, often feeling almost straight up contrarian in nature with many of the claims and arguments people like to make here. I've never seen a place so wildly unrepresentative.

I'm stating this because I'm a little more in touch with how most gamers tend to see things. And that's not gonna be based on what people feel is a stronger art achievement, but what they simply think looks more impressive. What has the bigger 'wow' factor. And that's gonna be the AAA blockbuster title made by a studio with excellent art and technical pedigree. It just is.

Misrepresenting the situation, yet again. smh They were the one getting angry acting like their argument was the absolute authority and nobody should be allowed to disagree with it. Guy simply threw a temper tantrum and banned me cuz I wouldn't accept what they were claiming.

Says who? Using what logical measuring methodology? Given you're posting in this particular forum, there's a very high probability you have a full time job and a lot of adult responsibilities. Why are YOU more in touch with gaming versus people half your age who have neither of those burdens and thus more time to play games? Very likely the same population of people who would very rarely if ever post here.

This self-assuredness is misplaced, at best.

Lego Horizon looks fantastic to me. Such a clean and crisp presentation. They've managed to get LEGO shapes down to the point by where it kinda just feels right even up to the soft curves. Shapes are actually round and the curves are lovely. I'd love to see this thing in wireframe mode to see what the models and environments look like.
