There's OEM 6700's
 
Weren't they rebranded Junipers though? (as bolded in the first row "ati2mtag_Evergreen") So what chip would be in a 6700 series card tagged with ati2mtag_NI in the drivers?

A card that is not 6750 or 6770 :p

Considering depending on review set of games & resolutions 550 has it's hands full with 5770, which is also cheaper than 550, I don't really see the need for it

Well if you are amd and have salvaged chips that can't become 6850 and/but can clearly win 550 i don't see why not. Plus the 6xxx series will attract more people (marketing reasons).
 
OK thanks for answer but there is something I don't get from the data Arnold provided us with.
I expected "Turks" to be 76xx parts, I see no card in this range in those data. There is something I don't get.

AMD Radeon HD 6790 will use a graphics circuit called Barts LE and as we implied in our initial article on the new card the similarities with the more powerful Radeon HD 6800 series are quite striking.

Barts LE uses AMD's classic VLIW5 architecture and will get 10 SM units (Streaming Multiprocessor) with access to a total of 800 stream processors. This can be compared to 12 SM units and 960 stream processors in Radeon HD 6850 that is based on Barts Pro.

Radeon HD 6790 has beside fewer processing units the same bus width at 256-bit and relatively powerful clock frequencies. The GPU operates at 840 MHz while the memory shuffles data at 1050 MHz (4200 MHz effectively). All to put NVIDIA's newcomer GeForce GTX 550 Ti in its place and offer a more powerful alternative to Radeon HD 5770, at a lower price than Radeon HD 6850.
 
Blegh, another salvage part ala HD5830, GTX465, GTX460SE.

I very much dislike products based on salvaged parts. It's like if a restaurant created a dish out of their collected table scraps from the garbage bin and burnt/rotten ingredients (6850 reject chips), added a ton of seasoning and garnish (dual 6-pin power and same TDP as a full 1120SP Barts) to mask the rotting taste and smell and had the gall to charge you the same price as a fresh dish made from scratch. I know and believe recycling is good and all that jazz, but this still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This also leads me to believe we won't see a true replacement for Juniper any time soon.

Well the clocks are already in-between 6850 and 6870. Since it's a salvage part I'm assuming it runs at the same voltage as HD6870 even for that clock, hence the high power consumption. I guess at least the 6870 clock should be doable.

If the quoted specs are true, it should already be quite close to HD6850 (my estimate would put this at around 5% slower), which means ~30% faster than HD5770. In other words, probably too good. So I suspect it has the same problem with ROPs than HD5830 had (rather high clocks for a salvage part could indicate that too) - and if that's the case the card will only be very slightly faster if at all than HD5770. There's another possibility though, it might be possible it has only 16 ROPs but doesn't suffer from the same problem as HD5830 did in this case.
 
it's a high voltage savage part, like radeon 4730, 5830, geforce GTX 275.
it may be nice if you can lower the voltage.
it has huge bandwith so it may be nice for lots of AA in a game with lots of foliage, but if the ROPs are fucked up as on 5830 this is a do-not-want.

It has just as many ROPs and the same bus width as Barts Pro/XT, so there's no reason for a 5830 situation to arise.
