[PS3] Infamous

I've made it to The Warren (island 2) having cleaned out The Neon (island 1), although random baddies continue to spawn there in small numbers. I'm liking the increase in difficulty in The Warren; the Dustmen are considerably tougher than the Reapers and even the buildings - if the prison is anything to go by - represent a more interesting navigation challenge. The story, particularly that told through the dead drops and TV, is developing nicely.

The only thing that is bugging me and it's a real minor thing, is that the citizens of Empire City are amazingly dumb. When an onslaught of baddies appears throwing bombs and firing rifles and rockets, the majority of citizens will run toward the baddies like it's some kind of street theatre to be observed, or to put it another way: like moths to zapper. Sometimes, I want to serve up some carnage on the baddies asses, I want to throw half dozen cars at them and lighting grenade the whole street back to the stone age but you just can't because the moths all rush in only to be wiped out.

I know the good side side is all about measured control, restraint and precision, but sometimes it's just nice to go nuts. Roll on play through 2 :)

I came to the second island today as well. Yeah it`s tougher, the buildings are more difficult to climb and there are far less spots to refill energy as well (probably there will be more when you power up the whole island again).
I also play the good side and causing collateral damage had no (or not much) negative effect on my reputation. It`s worth it for more XP as well.
And yeah the prison is awesome, it took me a while to get to the top and find the stuff there. There`s also a Generator that does nothing when you power it up, so I guess there will be a mission later on there as well.

I completed 3 missions. The game is as dangerous as the demo but I'm getting the hang of it.

The building climbing is nice. Not dying or getting injured when jumping off a high rise is a plus for me. Most of the time, I jump from roof top to roof top to sweep the enemies. I hate getting shot at when walking at the street level.

I like the platforming beneath the bridge too. When I fell, it restarted very close to the point of failure which is great. I thought Cole may be too "sticky" to nearby objects, but after the bridge platforming, I think the stickiness suits the gameplay (if we see more platforming in the game).

Finally, about the game objectives... right now it's SciFi plus some detective work. Don't know what will happen next. The depth and pace feel reasonable so far. It's a game; doesn't pretend to be a big story, at least not at the beginning.

I am appalled it took me a purchase before I know what the game is really about. Can't they just tell me upfront ? I thought it's just straight fighting all the way (e.g., fighting to gain control of the city).

The GT review has me very impressed. I had thought that the game world lacks variety but they have shown some very varied visual styles :) . I have entered a contest at GamingIndians, I hope I win. They are giving out a DS3, A blue ray remote, Infamous, Infamous Art book, Infamous Comic, etc. !

Damn, I just saw that I have lost :( !

Before I hit Hero rank I was trying hard to achieve it so I could give myself options on the Hero-only ability upgrades. Since I became a Hero, with the karma needle mid-way in that segment of the gauge, I'm finding it much easier to balance out my mission karma with my desire to be good and the occasional need to annihilate an entire street - citizens included. I've worked away from several missions with mild negative karma.

Last night I went through a succession of Warren missions (all of which were a fantastic amount of fun) where precision arrests or takedowns simply weren't working. Perhaps someone much more skilled than me could do this (and I would love to see someone that skilled play these missions), so I made full use of my maxed out push and grenande powers and just let rip. The old 'the needs of the many outway the needs of the few or the one' philosophy :) Alas the game doesn't see it that way, even if by quick takedowns you save vastly more innocents - apparently it's not a numbers game although I'd rather sacrifice a few by my hand and save a lot from others but I guess that's another debate and not one for here.

The prison reminded me a lot of Tomb Raider but where the climbing is fast and fun. I can get close to some huge metal tower on island 2 and I'm really keen to have a climb around that :) Having really enjoyed The Neon, I'm amazed I am enjoying The Warren even more, they keep raising the bar on story missions I'm keen to see what comes next. Forth day in and I'm not even half-way through inFamous nor do I have any fatigue, I want to play more and more. Best value for money game I've played since Fallout 3, GTA IV and Oblivion, I so hope they do mission DLC or a sequel.

I found this at Gaf from dark10x, a man who plays a lot of games and is notoriously hard to please.

I can't believe how good this game is. I absolutely love it. At this point, I'm ready to declare this the single best sandbox game I've ever played (or at least my favorite). It's an open world without the problems typical of open world games. They didn't skimp on scripting, story telling, atmosphere, or anything nor did they present dodgy controls. It plays like a dedicated platform/action game with complete freedom. Even the side missions are fun as they actually test your platforming and combat skills quite nicely.

Yeah, I tried to climb every thing I saw in the game. Every tree in the park can be climbed (but not individual branches, usually). Every building can be scaled in its own way. You can also run on cables, hang on pipes weaving between the buildings. Falling is not an issue unless it's a main quest puzzle. Climb to the tallest skyscrappers, look down and jump, you'll see the ground rushing toward you. It's kinda dizzy inducing :)

If you hurt a civilian directly during a fight, it will affect your karma rating. If you jump into a pool of water, you'll be electrocuted. Take 4-5 direct rifle shots and you're dead meat. :)

Some of the NPCs and enemy reactions are not so convincing, but as long as you don't take the game too seriously (It's a superhero game :-|), it should be fine. e.g., The cars will stop abruptly to let you pass, or you can jump on top of the cars as you platform around. I haven't seen any "simulated events" like car accidents yet. GTA is cool in that aspect.

About the earlier aliasing complains, I saw some but it's very minor compared to the entire package.

Just beginning to get into the story. The detective work will probably expose an elaborate scheme. I hope the ending doesn't disappoint.

If you want to get the most from the story, watch all the TV broadcasts when prompted and collect as many dead drop tapes as you can. The former give you an insight in to the thinking of the Federal Government which should get you questioning some things. The latter are pretty much the only way of finding up what happened before the explosion and both really add to the story which really only teases you along until the end.

I completed the game as a Hero last night and thought it was a superb ending in the finest comic book tradition. I'm now replaying as evil and surprised already at how different it feels. I wonder how many reviewers played both sides before writing up this game.

I played the demo again and this time I made sure I stayed on the rooftops and took every mission that way. The whole feeling changed :D ! it was great !

I am so buying this game as soon as I get on with my new job( and get my salary ;) )

Let me know if Evil plays better.

No.

Evil upgrades are lame, all about more destruction (which is fine if you only care about that I guess). Evil only power is slightly more useful but more costly than its good counterpart. The fact that story is pretty much same and do not exactly fits well with an evil character is also a neg.

On the plus side if you play evil on hard, you learn to appreciate the combat system even more, as you have to continuously keep track of all the power sources for both health and energy. I also noticed most of the objects in the game can be (re)charged and used as a power source if needed, whether they are actually a power source or not, and this is surprisingly handy when cornered or even in the middle of a boss battle, especially so in the powerless sections of the city.

While a lot of aspects of Infamous electricity don't make sense at all, those little things add new dimensions to the combat, which is beyond awesome.

I need to sleep and get up early now, but I have to say that the "implementation" of third spatial dimension in this game with its effects on combat and missions simply makes the best sandbox (aka GTA like) game I have ever played.

Too bad you and tha_con are the only people in my frienlist I have seen playing.

I have seen some gaffers and Homies on my friends list play inFamous.

What am I supposed to do in High Ground after charging the cell tower ? I made a round trip in the black out area to kill all the vehicle gunners and then what ? They seem to respawn when I came back again.

Playing Evil is more about destruction. All of the attacks have Area of Effect and massive splash damage.

Playing Hero makes you feel more accurate, it's all about precision.

I'm going to my hard run on Hero, as I think it'll be a bit easier.

Does anyone know if there is a good way to see how many shards you've collected? I like that it tells me how many deaddrops I have left, but I don't think it does the same for Shards.

I did notice that a lot of the story elements and your interactions between other characters is different based on your karma (good / evil). I also think the story fits both ways, as Cole is trying to leave the island, but has to do Moyas bidding in order to do so (in a nutshell).

Mod : Wrap spoliers in spolier tags. [ spoiler ] sans spaces.

A few reviews commented that the motivation for evil to complete the story missions didn't make sense but, like you say, I see the exact same motivation whether you walk the good or evil path. Good Cole isn't following story missions to clean up Empire City, that's pretty clear from his dialogue - and attitude - to key characters. It's obvious from the first 3 or 4 story missions where he makes his motivations very clear.

I'm finding I like evil. The responses to the moral dilemmas are fitting and the evil side missions are a blast. Plus the fights tend to be way more hectic if a little shorter. It's certainly easier not having to worry too much about collateral damage when throwing the environment about.

Thanks to the mod who helped me out, for whatever reason I completely forgot about spoiler tags! Much appreciated!

Soup - Yea, I love dropping down from the highest points in Empire City and just demolishing the bystanders and enemies alike.

Anyone climb up the extremely tall "building" in the Warren? I managed to get near the top, and missed a jump (UGH) and just ended up doing a thunder drop all the way down. It makes me wish that the thunder drop always increased in power for distance dropped and never had a "cap". I feel it would be absolutely amazing to do a thunder drop and clear a few city blocks!

I just beat the game today. I was playing as Good. It was FANTASTIC! One of the best games I have ever played. I really really loved the ending and how the story all came together so well.

Really fantastic game.

Answering my own question.

Don't freaking stay on rooftop all the time :)

I think Hero part is only partially true. One power upgrade helps you recharge per hit, other one heals on "headshocks", another auto live captures, one makes enemies hang on air, one lets you guide your missiles, etc..

Beginning of the story fits both ways, not only because you are only trying to leave the city but also you are not a saint or satan yet. But once you are satan, you kill more innocents than the bad guys do, yet you are still trying to stop them and their killing toys, sometimes from the good of your heart, sometimes just to see the next mission given by a person who doesn't seem to notice you are the most evil being out there.

Story is same for both sides anyway, your karma choices don't change a thing besides a (really) few dialog sentences in between, your color and civilian perception.

How're the Evil side missions ? I noticed that playing the good side will close off some missions from the bad side.

IIRC, it has (only) two "escort the prisoners" missions but overall they are slightly more connected storywise as opposed to the good missions which are totally unrelated to anything and each other.

The unique evil missions are the ones where you team up with one of the bad sides, either with their conduits or some other minions.
