Xenon Information from MS

having a console that can play dvd's is kinda pointless when you can get a cheap reliable progressive scan standalone player for as little as $30.

Personally I would not use a console to play a DVD. When sony and MS launced their console the consumer was forced to buy a "remote" to enable the functionality and they were going for near $70. Now they can't give them away.

If they are going to claim a console can play DVDs it better be able to do it right out of the box without having to spend any extra cash and the playback quality should be better than your average progressive scan player.

Today, yes, but when PS2 came out, DVD players were more expensive, so it was a good deal to have a console which plays game and also DVDs (and CDs and whatever else) on top of it. Then when prices came down, people also bought standalone players if they didn't have one.

Same thing for BlueRay/HDDVD. At first, it will be a nice (VERY nice actually) bonus to have a console that can also play beautiful HD movies on either format, as well as DVDs (i expect full pro-scan DVD playback from next gen consoles, if DVD playback is there at all) and CDs and whatever else, then when prices of standalone players will come down, people who care about it, will buy them.

Not sure why all the negativity. The platforms will sell at a decent price anyway, it's not like Sony or MS are gonna release them at 500 quid just because they included BR/HDDVD playback for god's sake!!

At least MS said a 1Tflop SYSTEM and not a 1Tflop CHIP.

One's as unlikely as the other, at least in terms we understand

Actually it most people here who count FLOPS wrong, not people like MS and Sony. People like to exclude fixed function flops but its still there and its still real floating point calculations.

Calculate how many flops its takes do 4 persepective correct 4 channels interpolators for example... Let alone 16 texture address units.

Indeed GPUs are usually underestimated for GPGPU work because people forget how many FLOPs you save by using all those free LERPS and modulus operators....

All true, but some that power is "hidden". Some prefer to talk in terms of programmable power...I know you know ;) Sony will undoubtedly count all of that too now (if they weren't going to do so before - but I'm sure they were!), and come out with some even more ridiculous number.. :?

Blame NVIDIA, they did that with the Xbox (what was it? 80GFLOPS??). :devilish:

But it will be funny to see what numbers they will all pull out of their asses.

Sony has always been rather realistic with their capabilities, even though they love their theoretical specs, in fact i think the PS2 is the most publicly known console architecture i know of, pretty much everything about it has been documented on the internet. Everyone knows, and has known since very early in PS2's life, what are the PS2 capabilities. Only problem was the fabois hanging on to that 75M/66M number...

The Blu-ray, as dvd was, will be an introduction to BR for most.
It'll give them a good taste what BR is. It'll satisfy them for a while, just as those who had only watched VHS before dvd's were satisfied with PS2 dvd when they compared it with VHS and TV picture.
The PS2 and xbox dvd playback and ergonomics weren't that bad if you had not owned a standalone dvd player before. They were a huge leap forward in both compared to vcr's (though not recordable).

MS is just going to release another version of the console that has an up to date DVD player (blue ray or HD-DVD) in a version of xenon that also has PVR capabilites. I'm sure that will happen.

Well yeah, but the balooning of FLOP ratings through use of hardwired circuitry is one of the reasons why the term has always been ridiculled as a valid speed measurement.
Not to say that makes hardwired operations any less important, but PR people are certainly being creative in how they ocassionally present performance numbers without a context.

I think i should open a thread on "What number do you think will be used and exploited to make one console look more powerful than another?"

A: Controller clockspeed
B: Length of the powercable
C: The ratio of the length of the console divided by the width is PI!!!
D: Resolution and number of colours on the frontal LED screen (would be good if there were one)
E: Time it takes for the disc drive to open and close (don't wanna waste time to play Halo8 do we!)

You didn't have to (and still don't have to) spend a dime extra to play DVDs on PS2.

Remote that you had to buy for Xbox to play DVDs wasn't nowhere near $70.

This is no realtime demo, it's Blur studio's Oscar-nominated CG shortfilm... Where did you get this stupid idea?

i think he was just..ya know...joking...... ;)

The problem is, I've already seen this posted in another forum as a fact... No nextgen console will be able to do such visuals, Blur has a 100-machine renderfarm for calculating that stuff.
