Looks like i'm going to lock myself in and buy a few 12 month cards at $30 a year.

Do the cards ever expire? I never checked.

I don't know , i know if you enter them in they wont expire. I'm good till oct 2011. But I will order a few more now. Might as well if its $60 after Dec then I can get 2 years now for the price of one next year.

Good thing I have another 12 month card unused. This really really sucks. Nice strategy to lock people in, get them dependent on the system and then jack up the price.

What I hate the most with Live tho and what primarily makes me not pay for it, is that each subscription is for one GT only, and not for the whole console...Not a problem for those who live alone, but a huge problem for families

Not to mention that MS is the only out of the 3 demanding payment for online play...

xbox live family plan was announced months ago. Its $100 for 4 people and has a ton of parental controls.

At $100 its a steal with these new prices. Its $20 bucks cheaper than paying for 2 people and you'd be paying $240 for 4 people under the new prices

Outside of "because we can" I wonder if this is to offset royalties cost for upcoming services announced or unannounced.

...

This is by far my most expensive generation ever...of course, I make by far more money than in previous generations so I guess it balances out but damn...

What date does the Family Pack arrive?

It's a steal for Microsoft, not for us, considering we should never have to get additional subscriptions when we are playing at the ******* same console

Heck, about all games not being MMOs on the PC are free to play online, as well as PSN and Wii
It's a disaster that MS gets away with this

Here's a question: If I don't renew my XBL subscription, will this affect my ability to access GFWL? I assume the account will stay active, I just won't be able to use it on Xbox..

Your account stays active no matter what. The only change is that on X360, you'll be moved into the Silver membership level.

Xbox Live is a great service, so on one hand I don't mind paying a little bit of money for it, but on the other hand families and multi-user homes get screwed as mentioned above, and prices creeping up worries me a bit. There is a limit to what I think I should pay for a service like this.

Even less reason to go along with microsoft's scam of charging (a ton of) money for hosting games on your own hardware.

Unfortunately psn is still behind live so I guess they feel they can get away with this. I'll keep it going for now since I tend to renew live for dirt cheap anyways from the multitudes of deal available, but this gen is definitely getting long in the tooth to me so not sure how much longer I'll keep it. I'm finding more and more of my game purchases are on PC nowadays as the consoles are just so damn old.

If PSN was feature competitive, I'd have a really hard time justifying paying for Xbox Live. But it seems like PSN has gone the pay route, so it'll depend what features become free etc. Well, there's also the exclusives I like, but in general Live is worth it to me because I like it a lot more than PSN.

But it seems like PSN has gone the pay route

Not really? Playstation Plus is hardly 'the pay route'. It's a game subscription / book club type of thing that, apart maybe from automatic nightly firmware installs and game updates, and the option to have some demoes pushed to you (that I'm willing to bet publishers pay for to have them pushed rather than that they are being offered as a real benefit to us), doesn't make any feature exclusive to paying members. You just get games and related stuff.

It's not Live's features per se, it's simply that people want to play games on their 360. They take the Live subscription as a given. At least that's my experience - for me also. When I turn on my 360 it's for playing a game that I can't play anywhere else, like Forza 3. If I then want to play it online, I have to pay for Live. There's no 'choice'

Ah yes I forgot about Silver. Back on the orginal Xbox when I let my account expire I was SOL. homerdog was lost forever

I know I'll piss off the PS guys here, but PSN is shit for online gaming compared to Live. That's what makes Live worth the money for me, and also some of the Live Arcade exclusives. If PSN was feature competitive, I'd have a lot less reason to stick almost solely to my xbox.

Expected this for a while. The funny thing is moron Pachter has been saying it's going to $100 or something for the longest, when anybody could see the next natural step was to $59. Since it's the price of a game anyway.

Not really happy though, I think I'm paid up on Live till like May 012 or something though, got a good deal on the PGR4 pack a while back so added an extra year yo my sub (PGR4, the chatpad, and a year of Live for $59 I think). But I might start looking for Amazon deals now when it comes time to reup, instead of just paying MSRP.

Not sure this was super bright of MS in this economy though. Basically it's a factor of inflation, but in this economy there's probably not a lot of inflation right now.

But people will adjust, many will whine, and nothing will change.

But yeah, I just checked the old compound interest calculator, and at 3% inflation per year, $49 in 2001 is $63 now.

Do they not sell year subscriptions in Canada, UK, and Mexico? Why does the chart only show monthly prices for those locations?
