From all the reactions I've read on about half a dozen forums and blogs, about 80 to 90% think the design is ugly (I don't want to use the word mostly used). And as a designer myself, I would even say it's the worst industrial design I've seen in years.

Then you come dangerously close to tagging yourself as biased.
Explain, from a technical standpoint (where your design experience can help as appearance is entirely subjective and a designer is no better judge (maybe creator, but not judge) than anyone else) what is wrong with the design...
It's by no means perfect, but given the hardware that has to go inside and the cooling solution there are distinct limits as to what can be done.
Personally I think it's okay, not great but by no means terrible, I wouldn't mind the look of it in my lounge, it's not going to be a showpiece item based on its looks... The design is functional and clean even if not pretty enough for some people and I don't see anything particularly wrong with it from a technical viewpoint.
Last gen, I quite liked the Cube, probably my favourite design of the last gen, but I preferred XBox to PS2, the lines on PS2 along with the indentations just didn't sit right with me, the XBox simply disappeared nicely along with the rest of my A/V equipment, what's one more black box in there? XBox was by no means pretty, but it disappeared amongst the rest of my equipment in a way PS2 just didn't and I'd rather have anonymouse than ugly...
As I said though, looks are subjective, I liked Cube, thought XBox was acceptable and PS2 was ugly, plenty of others will disagree with that. So, what I am interested in is, from a design standpoint, what's wrong with X360 in your eyes?
(Hey, if you're a designer anyway and you can find a bit of spare time, why not show us something better?)
