xbox 360 prototype designs

Well... I guess they picked the best of the worst, which is good in a certain way, right? ;)

Jesus some of those things are just  ... amazing someone came up with those...

The real design is definately the best out of all of those. Though i'm not sure about the colour.

hotlinking an imageshack full size image will just break it after a few views. Repost it and link to the thumbnail?

I just reposted it from an other board ... I not even saved the pic, sorry. Anyone saved the pic?

Thanks Clashman. That shows them all I think. Gotta click the second link at that webpage though.

they still are not showing this as a prototype or say anything about it at all, but all those are ugly I'm glad they didn't make the cut

From all the reactions I've read on about half a dozen forums and blogs, about 80 to 90% think the design is ugly (I don't want to use the word mostly used). And as a designer myself, I would even say it's the worst industrial design I've seen in years.

Then you come dangerously close to tagging yourself as biased.
Explain, from a technical standpoint (where your design experience can help as appearance is entirely subjective and a designer is no better judge (maybe creator, but not judge) than anyone else) what is wrong with the design...

It's by no means perfect, but given the hardware that has to go inside and the cooling solution there are distinct limits as to what can be done.

Personally I think it's okay, not great but by no means terrible, I wouldn't mind the look of it in my lounge, it's not going to be a showpiece item based on its looks... The design is functional and clean even if not pretty enough for some people and I don't see anything particularly wrong with it from a technical viewpoint.

Last gen, I quite liked the Cube, probably my favourite design of the last gen, but I preferred XBox to PS2, the lines on PS2 along with the indentations just didn't sit right with me, the XBox simply disappeared nicely along with the rest of my A/V equipment, what's one more black box in there? XBox was by no means pretty, but it disappeared amongst the rest of my equipment in a way PS2 just didn't and I'd rather have anonymouse than ugly...

As I said though, looks are subjective, I liked Cube, thought XBox was acceptable and PS2 was ugly, plenty of others will disagree with that. So, what I am interested in is, from a design standpoint, what's wrong with X360 in your eyes?

(Hey, if you're a designer anyway and you can find a bit of spare time, why not show us something better?)

and like that new criminal x360.
Was there ever any doubt you would? You're like, the biggest billy goat f-boy this side of neptune! Besides, I don't know why you persist in calling it a 'criminal', gangstas don't play console games, it isn't cool in their book. ;) It's just a hunk of plastic, alright? Stop attaching words to it that don't belong there.

The design is alright enough in my book, but it would have looked much better with a slot-in drive. Not to mention been much more user friendly, as trays and vertical designs mesh badly (as those who've used PS2s upright for a couple years can attest to). It works, but it's hardly ideal.

Every single person is biased in one way or another, that's why I mentioned the reactions on different communities additionaly to my own view on it.
