Would you rather have the Cell work on Graphics or Physics?

My point though was that the bandwidth in the chip shouldn't hamper from using spe in development now since the structure of the chip will likely remain unchanged.

He was saying that bandwidth to the GPU would hamper using the CPU for graphics currently. According to watch impress, the current dev kits have 2GB/s total between Cell and the G70. If that's split both ways, that's 1GB/s from Cell to the GPU. 1/20th of the final machine going to RSX (1/15 of the final machine going back to the CPU).

So computationally there'll little obstacle, but in terms of getting the data from A to B, currently there is.

I think beyond technicalities of the early dev kits, I think the greater obstacle for first generation games will be the necessity to simply get everything else working well on the CPU first. Graphics on Cell likely won't be a priority for any first gen game - you gotta get all the "normal" things working first before you can even think of dabbling with "nice" things.

Better question: If developers are just using the PPE and 6800 SLI/G70 equivalent cards why does anyone think that games will look any better on that than an x360 dev kit? 6800 and X850 are roughly equivalent in power and the PPE in both systems will be roughly the same.... its like both systems will use the same spec for the first gen anyway.

Logically you should see very little difference in the first gen games.

Even if it were the exact same hardware, I would expect the console games to look better than PC games, because console games can focus on a single hardware setup and optimize their games just for that.

Where did the "5-10% better graphics" figure come from?

Why don't we just listen to what people working on PS3 games have to say about this, instead of spreading misinformation and make flawed assumptions? Because this thread is just full of assumptions based on prejudices.
