World Cup 2014

I think we can all blame the ref, to scared to book anyone in the first half so they thought they could get away with anything in the second, and they did.

A very clumsy challenge by Zuniga, but I'm not convinced that he deliberately set out to injure Neymar. It should certainly have been a booking at the very least, however.

For the other game, I was surprised that France didn't offer more. I thought they would play with a bit more intensity after falling behind but the Germans held on to their lead quite comfortably.

It would of been a travesty if costa rica won, but thats the way in football due to there being a fair amount of luck involved often the best team doesnt win. Look at the last world cup, NZ was prolly the worse team there but was the only team to finish the tournament unbeaten!

Pretty predictable (and thus boring) semi finalists

latest odds
Brazil 3.40
Argentina 3.25
Germany 3.40
Netherlands 4.50

I'm kicking myself for not putting money on holland at the start (they were 13$) I thought they would go far (nice draw for them)

I am totally not into football much, but in this country it's hard to avoid. I took part in the betting game (no money involved, we just use one of those sites and it's all point based) in the office for the social aspect basically. I bet on Brasil vs Germany in the first round, and then when the knockout phase started I predicted everything correct so far (as did most of my colleagues), but I changed it to the Netherlands beating Germany in the final, and Brasil beating Argentine for third place.

Otherwise though, yeah, that's 12 matches in a row that were basically following the odds.

But I thought it was pretty cool for The Netherlands to switch out the goalkeeper yesterday in the last minute. :D That was pretty cool - a tactic borrowed from handball I think.

OK, that's probably a very stupid question, but wouldn't you be guaranteed to win if you hedged your bets?

On the Germany vs. Brazil game, for example, if you placed a $10 bet on Germany and the same one on Brazil, you'd be out $20, but you'd win $34 one way or the other.

There must be something I'm missing here.

They're odds for winning the World Cup, not the semi-final.

Yeah it was a good move
It makes sense after 120mins of concentration, the person prolly is not going to be as alert as they once were

Yes, and besides that, this guy specialized in stopping penalties I think too (he's also bigger)

Why? It is a legit pragmatic tactic to play to your strenghts against, on paper. much better team. They played the only way which would maximize their chances of winning and they were close to it. Doesn't deserved to be called a travesty or anti-football or anything like that. Greece won Euro 2004 and Chelsea CL in 2012 playing like that.

That's because he's just about to collide with him. Certainly dangerous play and possibly a red card, but I don't think there was any great intent there.

He had already collided when the ball was coming.
He is a professional footballer with 12 years of experience and missing the ball this way?
Jumping and elevating his knee high !!!

IMHO it was with harm intention.

Yeah, I thought that foul against Hulk should could have been a red card as well. The fact that Zuniga didn't receive a booking all game is quite remarkable!

The referee completely lost control of the game in the first half when he also let some of the Brazilian players get away unpunished with some bad fouls on Rodriguez.

A game in which there are 54 fouls (a record for the World Cup!), yet just 4 bookings and no red cards shows the referee isn't doing his job properly!

Exactly, Brazil started the battle (with the refs lack of courage), Columbia finished it.

While it's bad for Neymar, Brazil brought it on themselves.

You really have to question putting on the world cup in a country a violent as Brazil currently is when you can get shot in broad daylight for a dollar. The refs must be thinking they will cause a riot for giving a decision against them that will maybe cost them the game.

Totally agree the referee lost control of the game.
But Zuniga was too far violent.

It's a nasty foul but I can't recall ever seeing someone get this hurt from similar ones, really unfortunate timing.

I don't mind hard fouls if the player actually after the ball. Zuniga didn't look like he was after the ball. If FIFA can punish Suarez after the game, they should also give someone like Zuniga (and probably others) similar punishment. That way you don't interrupt the flow of the game but punishment can still be given. This also need to be applied to obvious dives and exagerrated play acting.
