Windows tablets

Blackberry is much safer than nokia and htc just as a couple of examples. They are actually posting profits.

AFAIK HTC is still making a profit. Not much, but a profit nonetheless. Whether HTC will make a profit this quarter remains to be seen, but I'm fairly optimistic about that.

the new bb on at&t had no fan fair at launch , Verizon wasn't any better. Mabye sprint will be the charm ?

BB is going to get bought by someone rather soon.

HTC will be bought by some one rather soon also.

Mean while Nokia is actually starting to climb back up and windows phone as a whole is going up

You can be a successful company without posting iphone numbers. BB10 launch appears to be quite respectable, it'll probably improve with the physical keyboard model launch.

The US is very iphone centric in terms of sales. Looking at verizon numbers android is half of iphone.

AFAIK, the Z10's sales throughout the world have been quite good and Blackberry (ex-RIM) has already increased their sales and profit estimates twice since BB10's launch.
The U.S. has been a market lost to apple for a couple of years now. It's not representative of worldwide failure/success.

HTC had a first quarter without the One being available. We'll only see if it's doomed after we get word about the latest flagship's sales.

IMO, we'll be surprised with the amount of marketshare that the HTC One and Xperia Z will take from the GS4 this year, even though the GS4 is a performance beast and Samsung spends 10x more money on marketing.

EDIT: and to redeem myself from all this offtopic:
http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/22/4252994/photos-8-inch-acer-tablet-windows-8-new-screen-sizes

8-inch Acer tablet with an Atom and full Windows 8.
The RT nonsense seems to be finally going away.

time will tell. Everyone said the same thing the last time htc released a phone and then the s3 came out and ate its lunch. The same thing will happen with the s4

Not exactly fair to compare BB on US operators versus Nokia worldwide, in the US Nokia shipped 400k Lumias.

Worldwide Nokia shipped 5,6 million Lumias of wich 3,7 million were WP8 units. Since Nokia is not bragging that 3 million of those were Lumia 920s im assuming it sold like crap and they dont want anyone to know. And im not sure how WP is growing, has it broken the 5% marketshare barrier yet? It has no real traction. Sony has not officially announced their quarterly results yet so the numbers im giving could be off by some amount but they are expected to announce over 8 million android phone shipments, roughly 4 million of those will be Xperia Z. Their smartphone division has been making profit for a number of quarters but Sony has a whole will be posting losses because of their other divisions. But it puts a dent in the "you cant make money on Android" argument, this is with almost no US presence. HTC is in trouble because of foolish executive decisions, not because the competition is too fierce (wich it is)

Dellusions!

Nokia's Q1-2013 results are in and they sold 5.6 million Lumias while losing a net 150M euros.
For reference Apple shipped 47.8 million iPhones in Q1-2013.

For comparison, Blackberry shipped 6.9 million smartphones in Q4-2012, of which 1M were the BB10 Z10 recently released. It had operating losses of $12M USD on revenues of $2.68B but generated a net profit of $94M. Also, Blackberry's numbers are GAAP whereas Nokia is reporting non-IFRS numbers.

So even Blackberry is selling more and earning more with a mainly dead product line, one new phone, etc.

It's not all roses for BB however, as there are reports that some retailers are seeing greater returns than retained sales (IE - returns of the phones are greater than 50%).

That won't affect the launch shipments as those are already sold into the channel, but may affect subsequent quarters if true as retailers will be less willing to order more. Only time will tell if those reports are true or not.

BTW - how did phone sales for Nokia and company get into the Windows Tablet thread? :D

BB vehemently denies the higher than normal returns story and went so far as to file complaints with trading authorities.

I only give the BB reference to put eastman's comments about BB, HTC, etc. being so much worse off than Nokia into a little perspective. Of the three, Nokia is certainly performing the worst at the moment. The logic that the other two will soon be purchased and disappear but not Nokia is just strange. That's all.

LG´s handset division had a 30% increase in sales year-on-year and 15% increase quarter-on-quarter. Operational profits from the same division quadrupled from Q1 2012.

A net profit of $20.3 million is lower than Q1 2012's $214 million -- but better than Q4's lawsuit-related $428 million loss --

But new figures show that Windows Phone’s sliver of the market is growing at a slightly faster rate than Android’s in the United States.

Windows Phone accounted for 5.6% of all smartphones sales in the three months ending March 2013, according to new research from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, up from 3.7% a year ago

Kantar said Nokia had the most to gain from Windows Phone’s growth, with its own share of the device market growing to 4% in the first quarter of 2013, from 1% a year ago.

as more apps come more people will buy and then more phones will be sold. I'm hoping for a 5 to 5.5 inch nokia phone on sprint soon so I can jump from android.

So I cancelled my order for the Kupa X15 and instead going to get the Lenovo Helix. The kupa didn't have a touchpad on the keyboard and battery life wasn't looking great either. I really like the Yoga features on the Helix as well with the different attachment options to the keyboard. The gorilla glass will also be handy. It's expensive, but hey work is paying it, and with the keyboard the base Kupa was almost the same price as the base Helix anyway. Just have to wait for availability...

I've looked at the Helix before but had a few concerns. One was the battery in the keyboard dock. The tablet alone is 6 hours, which is respectable for a Core i7 CPU, but the dock only adds another 4 hours. They have a larger battery in the tablet (42 Whr) then the dock (28 Whr). It would have been nice if the dock had the same battery.

And that brings up a concern that the keyboard dock may be too light and suffer from the same problems as the Samsung dock. That when the screen is tilted away from the user while in notebook mode, it'll tip over too easily. It should be as bad as this one should be heavier than the Samsung dock which has no battery, but still a concern.

I do like the mini-DP connector instead of just HDMI. Although HDMI would have been nice as well. Hopefully, they include a mini-DP -> HDMI converter in the box for when I'm travelling and don't necessarily have access to displays with DP if I wanted to have a presentation, show videos and pics to family, or have a multi-display desktop for work while traveling. But not a big thing to pick up myself I suppose. Still at the price it'll be going for? Hopefully, it's included.

And only a 1080p screen. :( I keep hoping that someone other than Kupa comes out with a 16:10 tablet.

SB

Yeah one of the reasons I was going for the Kupa in the first place was the 16:10 screen but alas there are no other manufacturers daring to do so. And the price on the Helix is definitely a factor for a lot of people.

I've watched some videos and read some user comments from folks whom have managed to get them from Asia etc so far and I've not read any concerns about the dock compared to the Samsung which a lot of users had problems with.
