Does anyone know how to just replicate the old toolbar behavior from 9x / XP? In my experience the taskbar just becomes a complete mess if you pin everything to that (both in Win 7 and OSX). Besides, I think there's great value in separating what's running opposed to what's simply available in screen space, which apparently modern GUI designers don't.

You can make it run almost the same as the originals.

Unpin all icons in the taskbar
Right click on empty space in the taskbar choose properties, then select use small icons and change the taskbar buttons option to "Never Combine" or "Combine when Taskbar is full"
Lastly to add back quick launch, tight click on empty space in the taskbar again but this time and add a new toolbar pointing it to "shell:AppData\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch". That will add back the quick launch toolbar from older verisons that Windows 7 doesn't show.

Done all that, I was speaking of the toolbars you could stick to the other sides of the screen. It's just convenient to have a distinct area. There are various third party apps of course, but none as good as the old style toolbars.

Looks like SP1 is live on Windows Update right now, but MS servers seem to be struggling with the load....

I didn't have any issues with getting the SP1 update earlier today. I probably beat the rush.

Why does it ask you to confirm if you want to delete the files?

Here's a web guide that seems to say the disk cleanup does delete the files.

Odd. Mine worked and cleaned it up. Did you run disk cleanup with Administrator privs?

Davros, I had none of those issues. I ran Disk Cleanup as Administrator again and it shows "0 bytes" for Service Pack Backup Files. Then again I think I did a reboot after running Disk Cleanup. *shrug*

Haven't done any cleaning yet (saving for a rainy day) but got the SP1 through regular windows update today and that went without issue.

Did the "run as administrator" bit on disk cleanup, and it now reports 0 bytes for SP1 backup files, so it seems to have worked. Of course, I was going to check free disk space of the drive before and after but forgot that (d'oh!) so I don't know if it REALLY deleted the backup stuff or just hid it away better...

Worked for me with Disk Cleaner logged as Admin.
Freed a lot more space than 640Mio...
