Will B3D get a review sample of ATI's RS300 chipset?

Hehe....it usually takes me more than two days on a forum before drawing death threats. :devilish:

I decline to surrender my virtual existence for a miserly integrated chipset (although I think it'll be a solid product for MSI, AsusTek and Gigabyte to have hopped onboard).

How'll you up the ante when I ask about the R420 review sample?

Seems like everyone is calling it Loki now.. how droll.

I will say that Beyond3D does not need to be the first to get a new bit of technology. In this game first does not equal best.

The people who get anything first usually get to play with this technology for 24 hours and then give it back. That is not what this site is about.

This is precisely the reason why in the recent past there has been such a problem with cheating, optimisations and underhanded dealings.

Beyond3D has good relations with Sapphire (Europe's main AIB for ATI) so even if Beyond3D is first I hope that DaveB et al do not rush things in getting a review out to be 'first.'

And so... Loki doesn't exist either... :sighs:

Hmm DaveB I hope you don't think I am sounding a little hypocritical here (ref: our last conversation about 'hits').

Not concerned about who is first.

I am fully aware of the quality of hardware reviewing that goes on here. That's why the question was whether B3D would receive a review sample (sometime in the near future was implied).

Whatever Loki should be called I know not. But the prevailing opinion has been that such a part does exist and could arrive as early as the end of the year, unless of course you are privy to info that has not yet graced these pages. In which case I'm ready to surrender my virtual existence. :)

I'm not sure what Tahir's talking about. I haven't heard a peep out of the usually talkative fellows who provided us with rumors of the R390/420/new400/Loci/Loki, so I assume it's still on track for release this winter or next spring.

I can't comment on any unannounced products, but there are always irons in fires...

Good thing everyone is calling it Loki, too, because it's its real name ;) "Loci" was a mistake.

Why do you think Loki doesn't exist? If you've got any inside info, please say so - but don't give vague, unreliable hints please... :)

Loci was a mistake?? I didn't know that.

But why shouldn't I give vague, unreliable hints? It's fun and others do it all the time!! I want some fun too.. ;-) Including yourself Uttar regarding the NV4x :p

Let me clarify though, from the xbit story of both RV380 and R420 being released together, from my experience it is not going to happen.

Of course a next generation part from ATI exists but the R420/Loki/R400 in the time frame people are mentioning does not exist.

The next generation ATI card will have more in relation to the R3xx than any R4xx technology. There will be major improvements, more so than from R300 to R350 but not nearly as much as from R200 to R300.

Why? It is not feasible in this time frame is one answer and the second is that ATI got nearly everything right for the R3xx architecture and only need to further refine it (a bit like the GF3 to the GF4 Ti series).

That is my take on the whole situation. Everyone expects miracles and when reality sets in people get disappointed for silly reasons.

And if I am wrong you can issue me with a subpoena... ;)

Tahir:
First, regarding the NV4x info... There's not a lot of it, but still, I find it quite impressive. It'll be released Sunday - and not by me either. Made a little agreement with someone from a site we all know about, so that more people know about it ( and that I get a few hits for NFI too ;) )

As for R420/Loki ( both are correct, but Loci is not, R400 is imprecise and R390 is outdated ) - What about saying somthing we don't know? ;) j/k

More seriously though, why do you think the *original* codename was R390? Because it's heavily based on the R3xx. We'll get VS3.0. / PS3.0. , but some features like Dynamic Branching will be very badly implemented, because ATI doesn't think it matters at this stage - no real-time application is gonna use that for a while.
Practically, I bet we're getting a R3xx with boosted instruction counts/registers and slow support for a lot of other things. But with overall GREATLY improved performance. Focus being on shaders 2.0. & AA speed while keeping the "possibility to claim features" .

The R420 is slated for Comdex 2003 - most likely a paper launch, though, maybe with a few ATI-done benchmarks. Doubt we'll get more, though.

Practically, the R420 *is* a refined R3xx. But considering they had nearly a full year for it, they obviously incorporated some other things :) No where as feature-full as the R400 though, I'd guess ( I say guess because we know wayyy too little about the R400 )
