Wii U base model 3GB usable and storage expansion discussion (*spawn*)

My hopes of it being IO cache seem dashed given complaints of loading times I'm seeing. 5GBs of apps would be a crazy number, plus no different to downloadable games. Why not make it 7 GBs available and offer apps and services as downloadables, as you say? Same as the rivals? Perhaps that's Nintendo's reasoning - let's do the opposite of our competition? :p

Anyone know how much of the 12GBs PS3 superslim is reserved?

I think there has been some talk and I think Arwin said or speculated that 12GB is the usable amount, out of 16GB that is actually in the unit.

I just wondered if perhaps the odd 12GB number meant they were using 16GB chips and report it as 12GB.

But from an amazon review:

When I got my 12Gb PS3 I immediately downloaded the latest version of the system software, and after that I checked the storage size available according to the system. It said I had 9108MB left. (Why not 12Gb? Well the system software takes up some space)

Ok thanks for the info. Not that it changes much compared to 12GB, but that amount of memory on PS3 is borderline unusable. Does anyone know what is the largest mandatory install size of a PS3 game. With so many games having mandatory installs, the 12GB model just feels incomplete.

Complete enough to do most stuff. There is no game with a mandatory install larger than that. Biggest I think is Rage I think with 8GB, who got special permission to be that big from Sony. There are other big installs, but those are optional.

I'm willing to best they choose this amount of space exactly for that reason, and that no future PS3 games will be allowed a bigger mandatory install either.

I think personally the 12GB model is fine. It runs games and BluRays, can install some download games, etc. and or manage the required mandatory HD install for those games that need it. The bare minimum, in other words, which is the point.

And then once you're finding you need more (many may not) it's just a matter of buying an off the shelf harddrive of 1-2TB and slide it in. ;)

Though a shame they didn't care to include this:

12GBs is limited, but it's not unusable. You want any game or DLC and it'll fit, including several items at once. That's in stark contrast to Wuu's Basic model with only 3GBs available. 16 GBs would make more sense (where do they even get 12GBs from?? Is it 16 GBs including FW/OS?), but as an entry level it is workable for "a one or two games at a time" player.

Doesn't an HDD require a mounting kit in the 12GB superslim? I don't think it's as easy as buying an HDD and putting that in.

Oh yeah. ;) Nintendo's a bit more plug-and-play in that regard. They just shouldn't have skimped on USB power or access to the SD card. Having an SD card slot and yet only having it for Wii is really odd.

Aren't you supposed to be able to put game saves on a SD card in Wuu mode? That's what I heard anyway, but shit, with all the bizarre caveats, limitations and inconsistencies permeating this hardware I wouldn't be surprised if the slot is physically unable to function unless the console's running in Wii mode...

Maybe but saves are locked to the system they originate on so it's not like having them on an SD card is a convenience over internal storage or usb mass storage where you can at least install games as well.
