The new Wii design is replacing the old. GC BC is being dropped. The thing doesn't look much smaller though. Anyone got measurememns? I guess this is penny pinching on the GC ports, the theory being no-one buying a Wii now cares for GC titles.
It's possibly just the removal of the necessary ports and slots. The internals will still be as BC. Nintendo may also be wanting to promote people rebuying old GC titles as downloads, ready for WiiU's take on the Virtual Console.
I don't see how a die shrink could save any space, seeing as the orignal already ran so cool.
Doesn't include the vertical stand either, and probably saves on support calls from people who inserted the disc wrong. Meh, what were they waiting for? If it doesn't include a die shrink, this design could have been launched right when sales started to sag. This seems very late in the game.
OTOH, every minor DS revision was acompanied by huge sales so what do I know.
The DS revisions generally saw an increase in capabilities/specs though, that's what drove sales of them. "No more backwards compatibility!" is a terrible bullet point to add to the packaging of a product...
they shipped tens of millions, so it would have been smarter to reduce the costs earlier (even though they should it severely overpriced (even factoring in development costs).
ontopic: this is not good for SSB I really like my GC controller for those
