They then went on to elaborate more on their new console, Wii. Nintendo plans to ship 4 million systems by the end of the calendar year. Exactly when the Wii will launch is still a mystery, but Iwata promised that a date will be announced "before September."

A new game, Pokémon Battle Revolution, will be available for Wii and is releasing a few months after Pokémon Diamond/Pearl and the two games will interact much like prior Pokémon games linked up with Pokémon Stadium.

Other features involving the DS-Wii connectivity include the ability to use the DS as a touch-screen control for Wii games and the Wii acting as a DS download station for game demos. Iwata also said that DS games could be "expanded" via Wii.

Regarding the virtual console, Iwata said that games, including new ones, will be made available for the VC at prices between ¥500 and ¥1000 ($4 and $9).

Cubed3: Will the Opera browser be embedded from launch on the 512MB internal Flash or included with the system via a memory card?

Scott Hedrick: The Opera browser is saved to the Flash ROM on the Wii console, and does not require a separate memory card as Opera for DS does. The browser can be launched in only a few seconds, immediately delivering a great user experience.

I am a little disappointed by the virtual console prices :(

I am actually not that disappointed with the prices of virtual console games, especially since it was mentioned that new "games" would also fall into that price scheme. I can see the older NES, SNES or N64 games selling at the lower end of the price scale.

I have personally never played Mario 64 and would love to have the opportunity for less then 9 bucks.

I hope they do classic "package deals" which bundle some old school goodness for less than $5-9 a pop. For a few games this price point makes sense but for the vast majority I don't think there's enough value.

Or Big N can have "Special Offers or Prices" when there's slowdown of new games for Wii. "Here...play these classic games; while we're working on another one." :)

Yeah I could see that. :) Hopefully I won't see that too often though ;)

Even though I can be wrong, I still think that they might bundle old games with new one, just like they did with Zelda.
Get the new version, get one/two set/your choice games for free...

At least that would be great.

Yes it is too much for games that many of us already own.

Plus it will not let me buy many games.

I could definitely see that happening, maybe as a pre-order incentive.

If you figure out how much the Mega Man and Sonic compilations come out per game, I doubt anyone will mind that much. $4-$9 seems quite reasonable, although I'd prefer $2 for NES titles. There are more than a few N64 and SNES carts that are hard to find for that price, too.

I'd find NES 2$ SNES 4$ N64 6$ acceptable, but come on $4 to replay MarioBros? That's just ridiculous.
Maybe Nintendo will make use of the NintendoVIP system, X points gets you one free game from VC. Or as mentioned before, bundling could work as well.

Yea, I'm of the same mind.

Frankly, my belief has always been that sentimentality clouds your memory. You think it will be great fun to relive those old games but once you actually play them again, the shine will quickly wear off.

Most of these purchases will be good for a quick game or two but then you'll never go back to them.

Indeed IGN is right.

My quick translation of the original quote from Famitsu:

Not only you can play previous works of Famicon, SuperFamicon, NintendoDS, Gamecube, PC Engine, Megadrive, etc., but there was an announcement and a new plan suddenly appeared: "we would like compact new works (note: games) to be played for 500Yen to 1000Yen"

Given how much companies have charges for nostalgis before, Nintendo's old games on GB, Midway classics etc., I can well imagine charging $5 for a retro game. For the wider public that's quite a disposable figure that doesn't warrant thinking about, and it makes an insane profit on the original investment, so why wouldn't they charge so much?

MS charges also quite some $$ for their xbl games...
mobile phone games (who often Suck) charge sometimes 15 euro

its qute a normal pricerange

In fact, how many pieces of software can you get for $2? I think $4 is pretty much the minimum no matter what you buy. Even fonts and plugins cost more than that. Ringtones and other customizations I think are the only things cheaper, and you get a lot less for your money on those. $2 would be nice, but unlikely.

true - the exception to this from what I've found is games of the same era which you've had little/no experience with. I've had a lot of fun recently with old snes games as I've only owned one for a short period of time and didn't get to experience the vast majority of it's library. Unfortunatelt unless they allow demos it looks like i'll be sticking to the one's I've heard were good and not the unknowns for those prices.

Lets be honest. Im not advocating piracy or anything. But how many of us tech savy forum posting know where to find things people, which actually pay for any of this crap? I would only pay for classics if they had netplay included through their online service.
Without that i already bought these games at ridiculous prices hello 80 bucks for super mario 3. If nintendo thinks they are getting my money again for the same cartridge without added benefit of online play then they're crazy. I'll stick with the emulation scene.

That's just reality. I already owned the games and paid too much for them. Too many people/business are trying to pull a George Lucas on us. Reselling the same content 50 times. F that, fight the man!

lol - agreed! We should be offered at the least (financial) incentive to try the less popular games that most people didn't give a chance. Bundling packages for the more popular ones at discounted prices should also prove successful. Considering as the above poster said that these companies are not making any more money on these old titles at the moment so anything they get for these games at this point for them is gravy. Especially when you consider there is absolutely no media/shipping to pay for.

Microsoft at least adds achievements, and multiplayer to those games. It's not just an upsampled port.

We'll have to wait and see what Nintendo will offer to make their retro games more than just ports.
