When Tuesday does the G70 NDA expire?

Thanks Dizietsma for the update, please keep us posted.

Sampsa claims he got the G70 running at 520/1380 with stock cooling. If it overclocks this good, why is NVidia and OEM partners being so conservative and releasing it at 430-460?
One of two reasons: either it doesn't and that's a cherry picked one or else they're holding back for the ultra to compete with ATi.

I think I will hold back too until both companies decide to stop holding back :p

I ain't in no rush to upgrade either right now, I'm very content to sit back and see what develops on both sides before I jump. :)

My next upgrade will be an XB360 this holiday. I figure, for the cost of a G70/R520 and new CPU, I can buy an XB360 + 10 titles. :)

I’m with ya if you can hook a KB&mouse to it. :D

Allow me to disagree.

Thanks. I hope you are not blowing smoke.

I am not blowing smoke, simply stating the obvious: ATI did wait for nVidia to make the first move. Now the ball is on their court. They have a card, which will be released within this summer as well. I cannot make any comments about its performance (obviously), I will just say that declaring victory for either camp is not possible yet (hence my 'one waits for the other' comment).

NFSU2 uses at least one render to texture effect (motion blur). The 7800GTX is 10% faster than the X850XTPE at 1600x1200 4xAA/16xAF, which makes me wonder if render to texture effects are a bust with G70. Though, to be honest, I dunno if any RTT effect was in use here as I'm not sure what the default settings in NFSU2 are.

NV40 is terrible in NFSU2, G70 is 137% faster. So NVidia has sorted something out, but it looks doomed against R520.

Damn, tomorrow (later today...) is going to be an awful lot of fun.

I agree entirely with you 200% :p

Y'know, I've been starting to get that itch between my shoulder blades today. But maybe I'll think of my first console since "Pong" this time. Have an HD TV to play it on. We'll see about that time, as probably that's as long as I can hold out. :)

There's going to be 10 good titles at launch? Wow, a console first. :)

Edit: I'll be an X360 owner. For those of you that are also going to pick one up, please remember there's a fricking console forum, and you don't need to troll PC threads with "Why pay $400 for a PC card when the X360 is out?!".

Pretty please? Had enough of that with the original Xbox for pete's sake.

Single-slot 7800GTX and H.264 Hardware Assist mentioned.

MPEG-4 AVC assist may be some time away....

Well, one problem is that DirectX Video Acceleration is not abstract enough (very MPEG-2 specific, for example, the IDCT functions/structures) which was one reason why the WMP10 patch was needed.

I mentioned here at the NV40 SF launch which I attended that I saw the Video Processor decoding HD on Linux using very little CPU. People were very doubtful it worked it at since PureVideo took so long to show up (but I did see it with my own eyes at the NV4x launch) My guess is that it is easier for NVidia to download the open source MPLAYER on Linux and hack it to use acceleration via some private OpenGL extension on Linux, than to get MS to patch both DirectX and WMP, especially if they need to work around HW bugs.

I fear we are in the same situation again with H.264. There is no built-in high level OS support for H.264 like in Mac OS X/Quicktime, and therefore, more patches will probably be needed to make it work.

Given that MS is more interested in promoting WMV/VC for HD content instead of its competitor H.264, we could be waiting awhile for OS level support. :(

It is nice to see another set of benches from pconline but I'll wait until the others come out. I am not so sure about their numbers after looking at the 3DM AA and Aquamark 3 AF IQ comparisons. In the AA one below the first set of pics has no AF applied but in the others it looks as though all the other sets have the ATI card with some AF applied.

http://www.pconline.com.cn/diy/evalue/evalue/graphics/0506/644143_12.html

Then the AF sets look like some settings may have been mixed up or AF not applied properly in the ATI drivers or the app.. It makes the ATI card look pretty bad in the IQ comparison. It looks as though only 2X AF was applied in all the ATI shots even at the stated 16XAF setting. At least I sure hope it is a mistake. ;)
