They just seem so arbitrarily expensive (aside from the Tivo package deals) for what is essentially a combo dvd recordable and hdd unit. I've seen wildly sweeping ranges of $328 to $800 to even up to the $1k mark. I've been "casually" shopping for one on the cheap, but looks like I will wait till they get closer to the commodity stage. It does get the "randy-pick" for best new hot product to succeed the vcr (tens of hours of recording to hdd + built-in archiving to dvdr for stuff you want to keep and recycle hdd space; said product also seems a "natural" as the hub for remote video switching of all of your different video sources, assuming it has multiple inputs built-in). Just have to wait a little longer for it, imo.
