Does the $600 feature an HDMI and a component? Can't you replace component with hdmi?

It offers both, because obviously not everyone picking up the $599 pack will do so for HDMI. They may want the other extras, but have only a component-in TV.

btw this protection thingy is so rediculous.

If you mean ICT/HDCP, it should be sort of irrelevant now, at least for another 4-6 years according to recent reports. You'll get HD movie playback (720p/1080i) over component.

ok but why cant you just use some adaptor cable like the DVI-VGA

It'll do 1080p HD movie playback over component. And I reckon you can have the XMB in 1080p over component too, which is nice for web-browsing, for instance.

I'm happy with the 599 package (euros, that'd be for me). I want the HDMI, just because I think it's a more convenient connector. And I want the WiFi, to hook up with my PSP and such, or be able to use it even if I can't get a UTP cable near it. (I'm also happy it has 1000mbit, should help for massive LAN parties  )

And the memcard stuff, well, extraish. USB should do the trick most of the time, much nicer than pulling the card out, usually, though there are these cameras with sucky proprietary USB connections (fortunately, they're dying out).

For myself I wish sony would of ditched the blue ray if it would of got the prices the same as the 360 prices. I have no desire right now for HD-movies I am going to wait out the format war. By the time there is a winner the stand alone prices should be reasonable enough for me to get a player. I never used my xbox or ps2 for movie play back because the quality sucked and did not want to create fights in the house over the gaming machines.

$500 version is good, it's in no way nerfed for games and video playback unless you are anal about having DVI/HDMI. you don't need the flash card reader (better to store your photos on PC anyway), and you don't need the extra 40GB if you don't want to download loads of crap (some of which you may have to pay for).
And it includes a PS2! good for people like me who have a GC and xbox at home but no PS2. that makes it compatible with PS1 too. so you can play physical PS1 and PS2 games rather than pay download DRM'ed ethereal games you won't own.

my ideal set would be a 34" CRT HDTV, $500 PS3 and bad ass 2.0 amp and speakers.
(but as a student I won't be able to waste my money on these things. too bad, that would kick ass)

ps3 dvd baby! ... "Stinky pits and all!" -kungpow

This poll is a great idea! Anyone know of any others which have a similar list on more "general" websites?
