Vive Wireless Adapter

This seems to be what the Oculus Quest should have been...

Vive’s wireless adapter gives the best VR experience lots of money can buy
For $300, HTC will cut that annoying tether tying you to your VR-ready PC.

That dongle alone costs almost same as full oculus quest. Quest is standalone headset with mobile soc and os inside. Quest does not require pc. Quest also comes with touch controllers and has sensors needed for inside out tracking. Quest is not at all the same thing as rift/vive+wireless dongle+desktop+separate controllers and extra base station(s) for roomscale tracking.

Oculus has 2 standalone headsets go and quest. Rift is the one that needs pc and hopefully next version of rift would be wireless by default. I highly doubt that though as people seem to be so price sensitive that it's advantageous to shoot for lower price range.

The Quest has a more expensive BOM than Rift2 needs to, wireless aside. Given Oculus's "this is the way VR should be" talk, that's hopefully a good sign that they go wireless. With their in-house research they can arrive at a better form factor that the Vive wireless. All the Vive stuff still looks very prototype-y (if still effective).

Pricing for these things is all over the place.

Why the hell would this adapter cost $300?
It's just a couple of WiGig transmitters, codecs and a battery.

It's like HTC and Oculus are purposely gatekeeping VR.

I doubt next gen pc headsets would be wireless by default on reasonable pricepoint. Next gen headsets will likely increase resolution enough for bandwidth to be problem. HDR and higher framerates might also be incoming. Low latency means it's difficult if not impossible to do good compression.

Maybe if headset had neural network acceleration. Something like nvidia dlss could be run in headset. That would probably make wireless viable for very large resolutions and framerates. On the other hand, would high end purists accept dlss based solution? Maybe if it was for wireless only and cable would still be an option.

Cost and heat would still be an issue though, remember how much people complained about rift pricing and still do...
