*Video Output Quality Discussion (Spawned)

I personally recommend you check all supported resolutions. I have a 1080p Samsung LCD and I have all the resolutions checked. More often than not, the developer will default to the optimal resolution.

But sometimes they don't (see BioShock PS3).

I can't believe developers still optimize their games for 720p and then let the PS3 output 1080i just because the set happens to support that as well.

BioShock and R6 Vegas are the ONLY exceptions I can think of. And does the retail version of BioShock default to 1080p as well? Like I said, more often than not. There are more 1080p games out there than there are that default to the inferior resolution. And if you use your PS3 as a blu-ray player as well, it would be quite a hassle having to go into the options to check 1080p.

add Ninja Gaiden Sigma to the list ;)

...and GTA4. GT5 Prologue also tries to use 1080 as well when it's enabled, and hence framerate nosedives whenever many cars are close together. I wish they would add separate output resolution settings for games and blurays in the xmb, so I could totally disable 1080 for games and leave it optimally set for blurays.

GT5 Prologue used to have the option to select your resolution from within the game. It's still there in the options but ýou can't currently change it anymore. I wonder if they'll put that back in eventually.

Did I miss something? I have all resolutions checked on my PS3, and loaded up GTA IV to check, and my TV is reporting 720p. Are you saying it shouldn't have picked that resolution, or is my TV reporting incorrectly?

What about Gran Turismo 5 Prolouge Spec III (most recently updated version)?

I read that the demo only does 1200x1080 with 2xAA. What about the most recent update? Wikipedia says the latest update is Full HD 1080p.

GT5P has always been stated 1080p from the beginning. Rarely is native rendering ever showcased, particularly when it is rendering under the advertised resolution. I dont see any indication that the game is rendering natively in 1080p due to the spec updates.
