*Video Output Quality Discussion (Spawned)

I personally find GT5 or Super Stardust HD in their 1080p mode to look better than same games on 720p. Given that we are talking about Full HD screens.

Given that the resolution difference is very minor I dont doubt that one would prefer 720p if only for issue such as aspect ratio and even scaling.

A third more pixels is minor? Fine I'll just say it: Bull.

"Everything else being equal"? So it's the exact same filters, textures, polygons, etc, but one has 30% more pixels and that is the "worse" one?

You're saying 960x1080 has 30% more pixels than 1280x720?

Im not sure where you are getting the 30% figure. It is about 12% increase. Please recheck your figures prior to assuming I made a ridiculous statement.
It not about pixelcount... 960x1080 simply scales better on FullHD screens

I personally would disagree.

This is kinda subjective I guess but all things being equal, I personally find 1280x720 to look better than 960x1080.

I also find that a lower resolution images with AA, can look as good or better than higher resolutions without any form of AA, COD4/5 is a case in point.

A recent example is Banjo Kazooie 3 at 720p and 2xAA exhibits less aliasing than even GT5 at 1080p.

BTW does anyone know what resolution Castle Crashers runs at native? And XBLA games like Geometry Wars 2 run at 1080p native, do they use tiling (3 tiles)?

I agree with this. I played Uncharted on a friend's 1080p set with 1080p only checkmarked, and the game had this ugly dithered look. Setting it to 720p looked much better.

Well GT5 is 2xAA in 960x1080 mode so its really not that surprising and GT:5P has a large amount of aliasing because of something to do with the HDR and tonemapping which causes the AA to be negated, or something like that.

I was referring only to the vertical lines. 1080~30%>720

IMHO, that makes a bigger difference than 1280 vs 960 horizontal. And the overall picture does have more pixels, which I still believe makes a decent difference.

I think even Naughty Dog themselves recommended using 720p on a 1080p screen. The 1080i support (and by virtue the 1080p) is mainly to make sure those 1080i/480p only CRTs are supported.

Yep, they did.

Personally, and I think everyone should do this (and everyone here would no doubt agree), I always let the game render at whatever native resolution it wants to, and let my TV deal with it. My TV has a surprisingly good scaler in it, and I've noticed that 720p on the PS3 looks better than the X360's 720p>1080p upscaling.. the X360 looks a bit soft on 720p games. It it weren't for the handful of 1080p titles on the X360, I'd probably lock it down to 720p.

It would have to be on a case-by-case basis because having a higher vertical resolution will aid in defining the horizontal plane, such as scenery. On the other hand, a higher horizontal resolution will aid more vertical objects, namely scenes with upright characters or even the view weapon for an FPS. like baseball players and crowds ;) So the quality can be quite inconsistent for the non-1:1 aspect ratio scaling, displaying results on both extremities (double horizontal scaling and no vertical scaling).

Technically speaking, 960x1080 means half the horizontal information for resampling and upscaling, and it's not just affecting object edges but textures as well. For the whole frame, any scaling of higher frequency components of any non horizontal/near horizontal detail will be noticeable, e.g. text, which is mostly vertical per character (ala posters or billboard signs), normal maps with angled details etc.

So for my PS3 - what exact settings should I set under the output?

I have a 36" Samsung 1080p.
Right now, I have 720p and 1080p checked on supported output resolutions.

People tell me to uncheck one to force the other in order to get better quality yada yada.

What exactly should I do?

I think the consensus is uncheck the 1080 modes unless a game or BRD wants them. I only tried this last night, and tested on Booty to see if the upscaling was better quality - the PS3 1080p output rendering was a bit soft. Lo and behold, the visuals looked no better except for a doubling of framerate! Suddenly the game was a smooth (though not incredibly stable) 60 fps.

Most games are 720p. 720p will be no worse as an output, and probably better - PS3's upscaling system is pants. However you'll want to switch to 1080p for BRDs and games like PJM that support it. Which is where a per game/function resolution mode is wanted. I should be able to tag a game to run in either 1080p or 720p. I want my XMB in 1080p but to switch to 720p to play Booty, for example.

What about Gran Turismo 5 Prolouge Spec III (most recently updated version)?

I read that the demo only does 1200x1080 with 2xAA. What about the most recent update? Wikipedia says the latest update is Full HD 1080p.

I personally recommend you check all supported resolutions. I have a 1080p Samsung LCD and I have all the resolutions checked. More often than not, the developer will default to the optimal resolution.
