I still think packing engines with sdk's is a bad idea, every game on the ps is going to end up using UE3

I give it to the epic guy's they are trying to make it so they are the only game engine out, I wonder how much sony paid though

The worst is when the developers use the same shaders, so that we get games like Huxley looking exactly like UT2k7 or GoW.

I don't think this mean U3 engine will be given for free to every PS3 devkit licensee. It just means that it's there if they want to pay for it and use it ($1M or so I've heard, for the engine). They can always decide to develop their own engine if they feel it's more cost effective or suits their needs better.

This doesn't mean unreal 3 will be packaged with the SDK. This just means they are officially app;roved to license thier tech to PS3 developers.

To be honest this isn't really a newsworthy story.

wha? 1 million??? where did you hear that? I know the doom 3 engine was pretty close to that, but I'm fairly certain unreal isn't.

I don't think they would offer it as sony's middleware if it wasn't going to be packed in, the engine runs on xbox360 also but it's not considered middleware. I guess it would make porting easier though, if everyone use the same engine that runs on everything they have no excuse

That's not how it works. This is just a middleware license and Epic are middleware providers. you only get the unreal engine if you want to pay for it,but you don't get it before hand. Btw, yes Epic is already listed as a middleware provider for xbox 360.

He heard right.

The price span is from ~450000 with a max royalty fee (not sure about exact % number right now) to ~900000 with no royalty fee.

I just wanted to also throw this in here because it said something about Collada. I don't know who Collada will help game development so I hope someone here can explain.

Autodesk announced today their intention to create and support middleware for the PS3. Autodesk's Media and Entertainment division has supported all of Sony's previous platforms (including the PSP) with their 3ds Max professional 3D animation software. Now, the company plans on helping 3ds Max title developers who rely on Collada and simplify the development process for next generation games.

"With a long-term business relationship with SCEI, Autodesk is committed to its on-going support that will directly benefit our 3ds Max customers as they create new, imaginative film-like game titles for PlayStation 3 platform," said Marc Petit, vice president of product development and operations, Autodesk Media and Entertainment. "We are delivering the innovative tools and game pipeline solutions needed to help our customers realize their ideas and harness the amazing power of PlayStation 3."

"We are excited to support SCEI and the game developers who create game titles -- as they innovate for the future of 3D entertainment," added Petit.

UE3.0 is the more expensive game engine on the market today.
And since Epic bought, recently, the "cheap" alternative available, the Reality Engine, and discontinued the RE developement/support, the UE3.0 is almost the only high-end next-gen engine on the market.

Money Hats for everyone at Epic Megagames.

OT
what?Huxley doesn't look like UT2007 or GoW
i mean surely the Asian influence shows in the level designs, if not the character designs (well its a MMO shooter)

the only problem with this is the smaller developers will use this engine and put games out on both systems .

Not necessarily for MS. It could just be another case of XNA at work, but more so that Epic made an excellent engine.

Actually, I'm surprised they didn't really mention XNA at E3.

its bad in the sense that the most powerfull engine right now is easily ported to both systems . Which means less exclusives for ms . IF the engine wasn't able to work on the ps3 then alot of games would be x360 exclusive

True...True..

I'm not really liking the prospect of buying two systems this generation. One system might have a better frame rate than the other but the one with the lower frame rate might have better exclusives (for me).

they are in the engine licensing business, of course the engine will be ported to all next gen consoles
in fact when Revolution comes out, i bet we will see the same press release (just replace PS3 with whatever Revolution final name is)
i don't think it bad for MS (perhaps bad for fanbois)
