PlayStation 3 enjoys record pre-orders

Advance orders for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console have broken all records, with high street stalwart Woolworths revealing it has been taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week.

The state-of-the-art PlayStation 3 will go head-to-head with Microsoft's Xbox 360 when it hits the shops on March 23 and Woolies, one of the first stores to accept pre-orders, has admitted it has been staggered by the demand.

Gerry Berkley, Woolworths' head of games, said, "It's the hottest gaming system since the PS2 launched in 2000 - demand will outstrip supply."

With a retail price of £425, the 60Gb PlayStation 3 costs £125 more in the UK than in the US, but this has failed to deter those determined to try out Sony's latest dream machine.

SONY's finally come 'home'! Hope they sustain this kind of momentum well after launch though! When's HS due?

At least 50% will be scalpers that I hope get royal screwed over in the ebay market.

If Sony ship the stock as quick as they did in America there will be hundreds of the bastards left high and dry with no one to buy their stock.

Chavs are dense. A lot of them will be scalping. No one should take one report from WOOLWORTHS as a good gauge of demand.

I bought my first PlayStation back in ‘96 from Woolworths but that was back in the day. Today they are a very marginalised chain. A better gauge would be HMV, Virgin, Amazon, Curry's and any of either GameStation or GAME or whatever hell those game stores are called these days.

No scalpers on eBay UK at the moment. As for Woolies not being a reference point, the fact people are them from Woolies must mean that far more are buying from other stores! They wouldn't be the place I'd think of to place a preorder! Or Woolies are getting all the custom as buyers avoid the more gaming oriented stores' forced packs.

In the US release they sold preorders. eBay had a system where proof of availability of the hardware was needed. I don't know what regional difference eBay UK has. Could be they're refusing any posts of the PS3 until the hardware's actually released.

no there is a deadline, as far as i remember they allow presale starting from exactly ONE month before official launch.

never knew such a thing could happen.

So perhaps Feb 23 we will start seeing them?

Based on a full seven day scenario and every 20 seconds thats roughly 30,240 preorders. There is roughly 820 Woolworths in the UK which works out to an average of 5.28 preorders a store a day for the over last seven days, which I assume is the first week of availablity for pre-orders.

I went shopping 2 or 3 places and man, i saw EVERYWHERE big signs for ps3 preorder. Even big chaines like Carrefour who dont do preorders are having big billboards up with PS3 ads

good I preordered back in August

Even ARGOS have preorders available or did at last time I looked (fixed number allowed based on allocation). The local GAME had about 15 pages of 'interest' names and have been phoning around to let people know it's time to pre-order.

When did they raise the price of PS3? As I recall it's been what they officially announced it to be in Europe and UK.

Back in May 2006 at Sony's pre-E3 conference, it was announced that the PS3 would cost EUR 499 / 599 in Europe, and the other EU territory sites still feature these price points.

You're arguing semantics. The UK price is equivalent to the increased European price....425 British Pound(s) = 635.331 Euro(s)

No you've got your facts wrong. The UK price of £425 was talked about by retail/Ray Maguire in the the months following E3.

What difference does it make? It's still equivalent to the increased price for the rest of Europe. Whether it was initially announced at that price or not is irrelevent...semantics. Just because they didn't include the UK in their preE3 conference means nothing. Did you actually think the UK price would be equal to 600EUR? I guess the UK is more special than the rest of Europe?
