Too Human

yea, I'll not be buying this as it's not my style but I really like the depth of the controls. It's far from a button masher and if you view the advanced control scheme tree in game you will be a little overwhelmed. I really liek the way they use the sticks.

well done game IMO from the menus to the battles. Much deeper game according to a dyak interview I heard than a typical hack n slash

Hack & Slash is any sort of Action-Adventure game, or Dungeon Crawler where the bulk of the game is based one exploration and loot gathering.

Typically these games consist of two attack buttons, with a handful of combo's that you repeat over and over throughout the game.

Compared to the combat in those games, TH is quite alot more fun. That's not too say it's excellent, or doesn't have big flaws, as you point out the lack of visceral feedback as you hit enemies is a big problem, the sometimes jerky animations aren't the best too look at, and certainly if you are going to compare it to a pure Action title like DMC, GoW or Ninja Gaiden it's not even close to the quality of those games.

But at the same time, those games are Linear with a capital "L". They do not offer any sort of meaningful exploration, and in most cases the story is crap. I happen to really like the storytelling in Too Human, you may disagree, but the point is Too Human has things it does better than those games, athough combat is not one of them.

I agree the SkillTree seems a little weak, and I'm pretty dissapointed with the aspect of the "Human" vs "Tech" sides of the tree. It's supposed to be the heart of the story, i.e. Do you become more powerful by relinquishing your humanity, yet I couldn't even tell which side was which.

As far as getting the hang of the combat, there is almost no difficulty in the demo, it's extremely easy. So you can play through it, and feel as though you fully understand the combat due to the fact you are dispatching the enemies without much trouble. But, it certainly does become funner, more fluid and more natural the more you play it, and by my 3rd playthrough the difference was night and day.

I dunno, to each their own. I love diablo type games when the loot gathering aspect is done right, I really enjoy norse mythology, and the combat is more than passable for this type of game, so for me I'm looking forward to this. Probably won't buy it, but it definately deserves a rental.

Castlevania Curse of Darkness had loot too, and perhaps more enemy variety but it was also a pretty awful game, and I certainly wouldn't give it its own genre to be categorized under, why would Too Human be any different?

You're saying that DMC/NG/GOW are linear but there's nothing in the demo of Too Human that suggests that it's not as linear or even more linear, except what they're showing in terms of the environments in the demo aren't nearly as interesting (to be honest the demo level was just drab), or that the story is better since we don't know anything else other than they're basing it on norse mythology, if anything the cutscenes are worse than any of those games in terms of presentation and style, the demo itself already has its share of awkward dialogue.

It's not like those action games don't offer significant character growth via an extensive and usable moveset with moves that are clearly distinct in terms of animations/effects/impact or effect on enemies, or new weapons that the player can continuously upgrade, weapons that are actually useful in practice instead of just being a part of the "loot" that you will end up discarding or selling. I'm not sure what you define by exploration, a game like Zelda or Okami, or Soul Reaver I would consider exploration to be an essential part of the game, in the Too Human demo I'm not really exploring, it's basically a flat 2D map with a lot of wide corridors, without a lot of climbing or the need to intelligently navigate an environment through the use of puzzles or platforming, there isn't much to figure out other than go in a direction opposite of where the character was coming from, DMC games had secret missions that are more unique and done better than the challenge rooms in the Too Human demo.

I'm sure the combat can get deeper if you play around with the demo repeatedly, but you can do that with a lot of games, games like Chaos Legion let you do a ton of stuff and you can juggle and mix in aerial combos, but that doesn't make those games good by any means, I'm just not convinced that it's even offering the same level of depth that even God of War 1/2/COO offered, it's not like I don't try to play around with things like aerial combat or 2-in-1s, it's just not compelling. The fact is that it's a console action game, it's not a PC game like diablo1/2 where you control the character via the mouse and you can't really do action controls and the game had to offer loot and random dungeons as incentives, because you're not going to be juggling and chaining in a diablo or a titan quest, with Too Human it's different, because we're dealing with a console game with a controller that accommodate twitch combat. I think if the game is rooted in 4-player co-op perhaps it would have been better than as a single player experience with the option for 2 player co-op.

I think I'll wait for the reviews before I decide to rent, the final product has got to have something much more special than what the demo offered. I can't rent every single game out there when there are already a lot of decent to good games on the market.

I don't have a problem with you enjoying the demo, I'm glad you enjoyed the demo because I certainly didn't so it's nice to see some people did.

I liked the Demo. It wasn't the best action game I've ever played, but I still enjoyed it and there seems to be a fair bit of depth to this game. I'll await reviews and decide then.

Just an FYI for those who pre-ordered from gamestop. The reserve bonus armor is in. I picked mine up today.

Lol , the armor is for the in game character silly.

Nesh , The game is not in yet , just the preorder bonus cards. You type in the code and it enables you to download special suits of armor and what not.

I want this game to sell over a million just to see people cry. Especially some of the gaf/b3d cross posters.

We shall see. At my old gamestop they have 40 reserves for this with 15 of them paid off(already picked up their free armor) That is more than Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. Actually its more than Resistance 2 and Little big planet combined at our store. i don't think it will break a million but it should do 500k easily.

I actually had a chance to play the full game a few days ago (the ms rep had it with him) and I have to say its really fun. There are things that annoy me and could have been better but if they can look at what people don't like and improve it the sequal will be stunning.

People pre-order a Q1 2009 game that is untested on PS3? Not to mention the previous one (not Liberation) was no more than "solid"...

People perorder lots of things. However sony has been making alot of noise about killzone 2 as far back as 2005. So its not surprising.

True again.

My buddy had some guy wanting to preorder dc universe already. I personaly preorder stuff and put $5 bucks more on it here and there. I have half of my holiday titles paid off . I know people say its better in your bank around , but really its just left over money from lunch for the week or what have you and when i go pick up a game its $60 bucks thats not flying out of my wallet all at once.

Well it is a bit different in Europe, specifically England - when you pre-order something, you usually only do it if you get freebies. It doesn't cost anything for one thing to do so. I pre-ordered MGS4 solely to get the DVD, with putting no money down. And I didn't even bring my pre-order receipt when I bought the actual game at launch day 9am.

We normally don't experience constraints here that are as major, unless it's something as widespread and commonly popular as the GTA series. Maybe GT, with a large enough userbase, but Sony isn't too bad at pressing their own games on discs plenty enough.

Another thing, I hadn't pre-ordered GTA IV either. But as you may know it was sold out for quite some time at most places here as well, specially online. I simply went to the midnight launch and picked up a copy that was actually reserved for some other people. :) They don't care over here.

Its the same here , gamestop creates an artifical constraint on all titles though. I have a gamestop two blocks from my house. So I preorder there and get the freebies and whatever and its just easier than going to the malls. Esp around the holiday time.

I thought ps3 owners no longer pre-ordered games from Gamestop since they were asked whether they wanted to preorder mgs4 for the ps3 or xbox360.....oh and how much better the framerate on the 360 version would be.
