ToeJam and Earl III

GameSpot gave it a 5.0, IGN gave it a 6.2, Game Informer gave it a 6.0. :( :(

Hasn't Sega been working on this game for about 3 years now?

I am so disappointed, since I was such an incredible fan of the original game and was told TJ&E3 was very similar to the first game. Apparently the game is now lame, boring, and repetitive.

How can a game be in development for so long and no one notice how bad it is?

To my knowledge, there´s two kinds of games that get delayed for so long.
a) A game that is progressing nicely, but that needs more time in order to be published.
b) A game that isn´t progressing well at all. Everything needs to be worked on, but it´s a mess and ultimately has to be released, or disposed of.

TJ&EIII seems to fall on the latter category.

Well it was originally a DC title that seems to have been regurgitated onto on the Xbox.

Sega _REALLY_ needs to start putting out truly original next-gen titles (that excludes DC assets) on Xbox, GC, and PS2. IMO, even SegaGT screams DC code left and right, there's no reason for an Xbox racer to look like that.

The creator of the game, Greg Johnson, posted a message on the GS message boards, here is what he said;

I designed ToeJam and Earl III as well as the first two ToeJam and Earl games. I'm very disappointed in Jeff's review and I encourage everyone to make up their own minds.

Here is a quote from last lines of the review in the November Issue of Play magazine, by Dave Halverson, the guy that runs the Magazine.

"At the end of the day Mission to Earth is many things...a great video game filled with some of the most impressive visuals you'll ever see, dripping with style and oozing with Funk Essence; a fan's wish come true; and perhaps most profoundly, proof that video game designers can still think outside the box, exhibiting vision and individuality beyond the confines of the generic planning so popular in today's board rooms. I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with it". And they give us a 4.5 out of five. You might even check out the preview by Ricardo Torres on this site, that was much better balanced, and as far as I'm concerned much more professional and better written.

Whenever you do something new people will be split. If you go into territory that is satirical and light hearted you face greater general criticism than if you do something that is dark and serious. If you incorporate funk and urban culture in your game you invite the criticism of every arm chair expert who wants to prove how much of an expert they are on what's "cool".

My advise to you and all gamers is don't put too much stock in what other people think, especially when it comes to something as subjective as this. You will know if it feels good to you and makes you laugh or enjoy some quality play time with a friend. You be the judge.

Hmm, this Dave Halverson bloke seems to be the only person that think TJ&E3 is a great game, he also gave Blinx 100% What's going on with this guy? Is he just a platformer maniac who thinks any platformer is wonderful or is he an XBox fan-boy or something?

What did he give SMS BTW?

Play Magazine gave SMS 5/5.

Greg Johnson is right, people should play this game for themselves before judging it.. despite the mediocre reviews.

Oh, and Jeff Gerstmann should get a new job, because I rented Pac Man World 2 and it is not better than SMS. Thanks.

Play Magazine gave SMS 5/5.

Ah right, so has Dave Halverson ever not given a platformer 5/5 :)

Greg Johnson is right, people should play this game for themselves before judging it.. despite the mediocre reviews.

Yeah if someone has any interest in this series at all they should try TJ&E3 for themselves, they might just like it.

Still I think from the reviews we can see its not anywhere near as AAA title.

Dave Halverson is really a big, self professed fan of both Sega and platformer games (not that there's anything wrong with that). He is a former editor of a former Gamefan magazine, btw.

I have followed DH and Hooch for years (since GF days). They are both big old school Sega and Nintendo fans. They love platformers. Remember Earth Worm Jim for N64? They loved it..everyone else (including me) hated it. They loved Jersey Devil as well. Play also stated that SMS is one of (if not THE) best game ever made. While I'm not ready to say that, it is certainly up there in my top 5 list. I think ppl should try TJ & E out first. I hope it's good. My XB is covered in dust.

Some of the response I've heard from people on forums is it's a great game. Some people claim to be really enjoying it, especially since they loved the first game.

I'm torn as to whether to shell out $80CDN on this thing or wait until Blockbuster decides to get some in stock. :-?
