The Kraziness of Ken Kutaragi

KK is a little man with a big mouth and an even bigger vision. Unfortunately, most of his visions border more on science fiction than reality.

Yeah and that crazy vision to be a market leader in the console world in their first try was crazy too. How many people around 1995 thought that Sony could come out being the leader between Sega and Nintendo? All it took was one shot a bam Ken and Sony's system has created history.

Some people just need one shot and some people need more. :) Ken should be respected for that, yet some people don't want to even give him that.

Playstation wasn't a crazy vision. There was nothing crazy about it. That's like saying Xbox was a crazy vision, just because MS entered the videogame console market. ;)

Sarcasm PC-Engine. But I'm sure many people didn't see Sony winning the mid ninties generation. Lets just wait it out and see whats becomes real and what doesn't.

Oh man, I SO want to say something here...

Face it, folks, the talking heads from both sides end up looking like brash dipshits. (And we're certainly not limited to the console industry.) Some of these people have delivered great things, and then later on--empty promises and gotten egg on their faces.

The politics in gaming has gotten more important and gained more scope, and so--too--has the bullshit. Even poor, innocent little Nintendo is busy telling everyone how Sony and Microsoft are foolish for choosing their direction and waxing poetic with Revolution about what gamers do and do not want, while busily ignoring their feet, wet from the drool their competition garners. (And that gamers have been busily voting against what Nintendo believes they "do and do not want" with each successive generation.) At least they're less about direct bashing of S&M's machines (I like that abbreviation ;) ) because they've all decided to just ignore each other: Nintendo of S&M, "Gamers don't want that." - S&M of Nintendo, "...who?"

KK is the easiest target in console-land because he's also the "longest-lived" talking head, and the one to whom the biggest expectations were raised in the very beginning with the breakout domination of the Playstation. Unfortunately, talking heads have nowhere to TALK but progressively upwards, whether or not the products bear any relation to those comments in reality.

And please, stop with the "BUT MOM, HE STARTED IT!" bullshit. This stuff has been going on since the Custaceous Era of Consoles (so defined by the fine layer of broken Atari 2600's and cartridges gamers have under their beds ;) ) Recently, however, we have the ability to track comments more easily on the net, more people online to bitch about it, see it milked for years on a web of message boards, and... truth be told... gamers that old have forgotten "the way things were" AND what was said, and in general (there are no universals among gamers ;) ) have matured past THIS bullshit.

Go ahead, we all know why people need to resort to insulting other forum members just because they cannot come up with a valid rebuttal. ;)

If you disagree, you have two options:

1. Come up with a valid rebuttle.
2. Troll by coming up with an insult to hide the fact you cannot initiate option 1.

Wasn't his rebuttal right here.

And I for one believe what you said cthellis42.

oh my, these are just marketing talk, do you really take it all so personally.
You've been lied before in marketing, do you expect the console manufacturers to be some kind of saints that treat you and their competitors respectfully and would never lie or cheat on you. This is nothing new, they're just doing what everybody else is doing in marketing.

Wow. Another 'who's the biggest, daftest liar' thread, where the same PR talk is waved around again. What is this thread trying to achieve?

I think the original intent of this thread was to defend KK's statements by blaming it on translation errors.

No the original intent of this thread was to show how internet reports like to dick Ken and show how horrible of a guy he is. I think some smarter people here picked this up and don't see him this one though.

Didn't Sonic open a suitable "Sony PR thread" to go with the "MS PR Thread" and the "Nintendo PR thread" so we could keep all this crap on one single thread. I mean how many times do we have to discuss CEOs comments... This stuff has been posted and commented on lots of times already. And it always ends up in flame wars.

This is what Peter Moore said to CVG. Who here thinks MS will reach one billion people this way? I sure don't think so.

COME ON, not again!!??

What MS meant with 1 billion people is that they want the WHOLE business to reach that point, not MS ONLY... but the WHOLE VIDEOGAMES BUSINESS..

... that the VIDEOGAME BUSINESS has an audience of 1 billion...

......... sheez...

:devilish:

mckmas if KK told you the earth was flat and sat on 4 turtles you would believe him. Sweet

Playstation, Playstation 2 and the PSP, his visions destroyed the competition and built an empire. And even a new bigger and richer market for consoles that forced Microsoft to "tap into it" and spend billions of dollars in an desperate attempt to defend their "vision" of 10 microsoft licenses pr human being.

All because of one "little" man, lol :)

The PS3 is going to walk the path of succes just like the PS2 while the competition drags along bleeding money trying to keep up.

....meanwhile, Sony Corp struggles with their finances and if PS3 isn´t the same success the PS2 was (by letting MS grab more marketshare) then Sony is in trouble...

Nonetheless..
We have to thank the little man for "making" gaming a more mainstream and accepted medium.. and also for "waking up the sleeping dragon" aka Microsoft and thus making the biz much much more competitive.. gamers am win because of this.. :D

The department the KK heads is very profitable. Perhaps he should take his crazy ways to the top of the company? ;)

That is true.. at least for now. How profitable will it be when PS3 is released, with the huge losses that machine will incur.. by being sold with a loss. The greater the sale, the bigger the loss.. so Sony better hope that they sell LOOOTS of software also and not start to use the PS3 for everything else but gaming.... ;)

IIRC the same concerns were raised over PS2. I think the important point for Sony is if they leverage the PS brand to gain other revenue streams, such as through Connect music download, film sales (UMD for example), etc. I don't know if KK dreams with a view to turning a profit, or just to create his ideal world regardless of cost, but talk from Sony points to the old Convergence market as being key to future success.
